  • Welcome to JustTenMoreMinutes aka JTMM aka The Freakin 10! Like most of the Sabaton History videos, it is teaching me more about or maybe I just don't remember being taught some of these aspects of the wars. The surrender and final days of the war were never really touched upon in school and so videos like these now that I am much older I appreciate that much more. Brilliant!

I think some of the big reasons why the end of the war in Europe is not more commonly known are 1) USA was still fighting Japan in the Pacific so it wasn't really over yet for them.
    2) Chaos, the official record of what happened is often either incomplete or classified
    3) It wasn't pretty. The allies, and soviets especially, did some very morally questionable things to the germans in the name of revenge, especially once they got to Germany / found the camps (all over the "Reich"). Lot of the death in the last weeks was "unnecessary", on all sides. Not to mention the ones after VE Day (victory in europe, may 8 1945).

There are some actual video recounts of American units across the river watching the German Artillery blazing away at the Soviets and the Americans just watched and did nothing. They knew all the way back in '45 that they would have to eventually deal with the Soviets.

1 million men or ten million men to a soldier in the position they are in doesn't matter too much. Cannot hope to win, or even to survive, but can take down as many of the enemy with you as possible. Slow the advance and hope your sacrifice allows people in the city to live.

Sabaton history really is good complement to the songs, makes them even better for me. I understand what you mean about the song in the background.

100% agree, it is nice to hear the history that ties into the song. I have mentioned in other posts when someone first mentioned the history I was worried about reacting to such long videos but instead it has turned into some of my favorite videos to do with the comment sections after and the discussions being had.

Definitely. It is the sad thing about generalizations in this day and age. I rarely talk politics but the simple fact is that no matter party affiliation most people just want to wake up to a better tomorrow yet all sides are slandered with hatred and generalizations because of a few that get the news coverage. That applies to anything, race, religion, gender, orientation, etc. Always remember to the media controversy = clicks and views. *end rant* lol FYI Germany is a fave place of mine to travel. I have been there for work and fell in love with it. Went to France, Switzerland, and Austria, during that trip and just so beautiful. Germany will always be special to me with that trip. One of the last ones with a co-worker who passed suddenly a few month after.

26:30 Regarding the age of the soldiers part Germany was mostly out of manpower at this point in the war. Most of the military aged men had died and the smaller amount of manpower it got the more extreme it made the requirements to be eligible to join the army which is logical but also not logical. I mean Germany didn’t start the war having kids fighting but after 1943 the amount of manpower Germany had was starting to be depleted and that results in more extreme measures.

The part that Indy said "No deserters, no prisioners, no missing" tell how they still fighting for his country and ppl there.
In the movie "Der Untergang" you can see hitler mad with Wenck because he desobey the orders to go to help him.
Wenck died in a car crash in 1982 i think, he pass the Nurenberg trials without problems, because he help a lot of ppl, a marvelous history have. And the soldiers under his command are heros too. And the 9nd army ppl who avoid the soviets is insane to hear....

In regard to German intelligence about enemy troop strength. For all that is said about how good the Germans were on the field of battle in the realm of intelligence it could not be more different. Some of the best examples are the Soviet counteroffensives during the Battle of Moscow, Battle of Stalingrad, and the Battle of Kursk. In all three of those battle after the Germans had spent themselves attacking their intelligence said that the Soviets were just as exhausted and there was no way there was going to be a counterattack. Time and time again even before the invasion of the Soviet Union, German intelligence didn't just miss a few Soviet divisions they missed entire army formations.

28:16 About if the word had got back to Hit##r: He wouldn’t be able to do anything about it most likely. The war was lost and the German army was in a state of every unit for itself screw high command (mostly except for the units encircled fighting to protect Berlin which was not Wenck’s situation). He could say he wanted Wenck dead all he wished but there was no logical way he could have reached Wenck and have him executed by that point.
Imagine it like this any semblance of frontline was broken for Germany and it was pure chaos by that point.

4:38 1 Million men advancing on Berlin but 7 million on the entire front fighting Germany. It’s not that shocking of a number but I myself study military history so I’m not really surprised by it. lol
Btw Indy Neidell the guy talking is very trustworthy at least majority of the time since he’s studied history and has enough years at least to become a teacher. But it’s also his main hobby to study free time. He has a Ww2 channel where he’s making a vid on each week in ww2 and he’s done the same for ww1 a few years ago.
Germany had maybe less than a million men at this point in the war but earlier in 1941 Germany also had around 5-7 million men. They however had them all spread out. 3 million invaded the USSR while over 1 million guarded the Atlantic wall etc.
In ww2 around 70-90 million people died depending on what you count. That should say enough.

    • @JTMMTV
      @JTMMTV  2 роки тому +2

I guess I never really thought about the numbers like that. I trust Indy but sometimes he gives a sarcastic look and so I was like wait what.... Once you think about the larger scale yeah it makes sense but again I never really studied it past school and our school system isnt the best.

Now a days 1 million may seem like a lot, especially compared to almost all modern conflictsbut given the sheer scale of WW2, it's perfectly reasonable. The UK and US had roughly 500,000 casualties for the whole war each. Germany, let alone the soviets, lost much, much more.
A good video to put into perspective the sheer number of people involved would be the "fallen of world War 2" video here on youtube
