Yeah Billy is one of the greatest composer/musician/vocalists of all time. You’ve barely scratched the surface of his catalog, Angela 😊
Yep!!
As a native New Yorker, I often felt this should be our state song.
Billy Joel is an icon, a national treasure!
HEAR! HEAR!
Great song. Billy captured the feel of NYC at that time. Just the Way you Are and Scenes from Italian Restaurant also from that period.
Billy was born and raised in NY. When he was older he signed a recording contract that he never should have signed which pretty much robbed him of everything, and he knew he had to get out of it. So Billy dropped off the face of the earth and moved to California (LA to be exact), that's where the "I've seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines" came from. He also changed his name to Bill Martin. In Ca. he took a job working in a piano bar playing the piano for a bunch of drunk slobs all night, which is where "Piano Man" came from. Back on the East coast Billy's song called "Captain Jack" was getting a lot of airplay but no one knew who this guy Billy Joel was. Another record company found him and got a hold of him so Billy Made his way back to NY. This song was written on a Greyhound bus trip from the airport to a house his then wife had found for them to rent. Upon arrival he rushed upstairs, sat at the piano and within an hour he had the song written because he was so happy to be back home.
Peace
Can you imagine being in a small piano bar in the early 1970s as he sings that song as you sip on a dry martini?
When I hear Billy, my mind always goes to NYC🤘🤘
I always always loved that song god i love billy Joel you can literally smell the song from New York 😁👌
This recording was played over the radio quite a bit, in the days & weeks following the attacks on 9/11. As a result, these lyrics took on a much more powerful meaning & perspective, and I remember how it stirred my emotions greatly during those terrible times.
I know that Billy Joel had no idea that, 25 years later, and under the most devastating of circumstances, his song would become such an iconic anthem to all who loved New York, and who love this country.
You absolutely hit the nail on the head saying this was a love song to New York because that's exactly what it is..he is a very proud New Yorker and when he does his usual New York gig every month this is what he ends on..listen to a live version..absolutely AMAZING. Love Billy..such a fantastic composer of music and lyricist..also listen to The Downeaster Alexa which is about the fisherman who work out of New York..and remember he called his daughter Alexa..another one is Leningrad which he wrote after meeting the man who its about..very emotional..one of THE best musicians of our time..i love your reviews because you listen to the music and only stop it if necessary..i watched one the other night and every 30 seconds it was stopped. .i turned off straight away. You our lovely Angela are THE BEST..🇬🇧💞✝️🙏🎶
Summer Highland Falls is another great sing by Billy Joel.
My favorite Billy Joel song. Makes me home sick no matter where I am.
Billy Joel is one of our living treasures!
Although living in ATL for many years, being a NYC area kid this song brings it home. Nothing like catching the A-train uptown, shopping on Canal or just cruising Midtown Manhattan on a late Friday/early Saturday. Great place to grow up…
Nobody beats him for setting a jazzy mood. Great review.
This is one of his best songs
If you’re gonna sit down and write a song called “New York State of Mind”, you better NAIL it.
Billy Joel says, “No problem, I AM New York!”
This is better than anything I've heard from the past 20 years or so. Growing up in the 70s was a blessing.
Love this jam.. first heard it at 9 years old.. now I sing it on stage with everything I've got....
He has a number of hits, and it's hard to pick one favorite! You can really feel what he's singing about! I've never been to NY, but if I ever go, I will think of Billy and his music, and hopefully create some more great moments that become nostalgic memories! Hopefully with someone special!
Billy and Garth's duet in Central Park is great
Sooooooooooo beautiful just like NYC! Love your reaction Angela xoxo
Billy Joel provided the soundtrack for much of my youth and beyond -- "Big Shot", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "She's Always a Woman", "Only the Good Die Young", "You May Be Right", "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me", "Allentown", "Captain Jack", "Miami 2017 (I've Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)", "The Stranger", "Uptown Girl" ...
We may be about the same age (63 soon) and I agree. I think what we didn’t know how to express as high schoolers is our amazement with how prolific and consistently great Billy Joel was. Here we are 45 years later and most of those songs have held up very well. I would not like to be without them in my memories of youth.
@@tonydelapa1911 You've got me by half a dozen years. [grin] I was a precocious kid with an ear for music. And the seventies were a great decade for music (even if many people did not appreciate that fact back then).
@@mikecaetano sure was. I was exactly twice as old when the 70s ended as I was when they began. What a sea change in a kid’s life and in our culture.
And some of those songs are not even his best. Captain Jack and Miami 2017, are classics for sure. But Uptown Girl is probably his worst. I don't even listen to any of his "do-wap" stuff. To me, some of his best work can be found in the songs, Summer Highland Falls, Vienna, Zanzibar, I've Loved These Days, Italian Restaurant and Good Night Saigon.
Born and raised in Brooklyn New York great city great song my friend
I relate to this mellow nostalgic 🎵 song having left NY and returned. Relaxing
Billy and the guys in his band were all boys from da Bronx--Grew up together and they stayed with him his whole 30-year career at Columbia Records. It seems to me he just HAD to do a song about N.Y, Now there's lots of jazzy tunes about the place, but this one just can't be topped.
Long Islands very own homeboy!
SO many great Billy Joel songs to hear! 😊
*Something in the air I guess because I was also in the mood for some Billy Joel, just tonight I got together with a lady friend and we listened to several songs by Mr. Joel*
*Like you said, Billy Joel is such a great story teller, and I too get transported to New York every time* *Might I suggest Gerry Rafferty "Bakers street" or "Right Down the Line"*
*Have a wonderful Holiday and God bless* *PEACE ☮️*
BTW Shout out to your mother, I subscribed the day you reacted to James Taylor You've Got a Friend requested by her, and your reaction touched me, plus it's a song very dear to me and my daughter 😊 ❤️
Aww December nice cup eggnog I met Billy 🌕🌌🌎🗽✈☔⛱🌤🌹🌠🌹💛🎋🐲🌕🐉
Great music!!!!! Great era of music!!!
We are lucky to have Billy and to call him our own. An American genius!
A showstopper of all his hits. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The guy's amazing, never tire of him.
You're adorable girl. Glad I could share with you
Watch the spectacular live performance of this hit (and the classic "Piano Man") by Rufus Wainwright at the Kennedy Center Honors honoring Billy Joel, with him in attendance watching in total approval. Also features superstars Garth Brooks on "Allentown", Don Henley on "She's Got A Way" and Brendon Urie on "Big Shot". Love watching a superstar honoree watching their fellow respected superstar peers perform their classics.
This is one of my favorite Billy Joel song.
Billy Joel is definitely one of the best singer songwriter and Angela you’re exactly right about NYC
Honesty Honesty Honesty should be your next Billy Joel reaction
One of the greatest word smiths of his time.
Bill Withers.. Use me Up or Lean on Me
The moment he started singing I think you melted into your chair...
Yeah, that happens to all of us when The Piano Man takes the microphone. Can't wait to see you react to more of his extensive catalogue of songs!
Sooo cool!! My favorite song by him!! 😅 Thanks Angela!!! 😊
"Until the Night" is a deep cut of Billy Joel's. It is a beautiful song...I forgot to mention this song while never a single was a tribute to The Righteous Brothers..
I've been wanting to post a comment since I discovered your channel over the Thanksgiving weekend. I mostly consume news and political content on UA-cam which often leaves me feeling stressed at the end of the work day. It's so relaxing to enjoy these old songs I haven't thought about it in years.
One of his songs I recommend for your playlist is "Vienna" if you're not already familiar with it.
I love to hear italian restaurant by billy joel
Just a taste of what's to come..... Enjoy your adventures in Music with Billy Joel 😋✌️♥️
Lovely reaction, sums up beautifully what makes this song great.
I know this is a little old but if you do see it. another big hit was "She's Always a Woman" from his early years, a song that is very surprisingly missed by the reaction community. A different kind of ballad. Thanks!
Agreed. That song deserves more attention from reactors.
Frank Sinatra has a song New York New York it's great you should hear it. One of the lyrics are the city that never sleeps. I went to New York many times and it's true no matter how late it is its always lively.
great song , great description. My understanding was he was burned out by L. A. and was heading back to New york when he wrote that song.
Magic ❤ 😥
It's 1 of Billy Joel's better songs Just Close Your Eyes and let it take you away
One of his best.
Two suggestions for Billy Joel. “ And so It Goes”. And “Only The Good Die Young” ❤️
Billy. New York, the city that never sleeps. That is all.
Use to love to dance to this song.
Une des plus chanson de Billy Joël
I love how you interpret the words to your songs along with the delievery and talents and I would think that you would really love Johnny Mathis "Chances Are" his voice is incredible but you need to hear the version from 1960 showing his picture on the album cover. Being over 75 I am sorry that i cannot afford to give you any gifts but I do so love the way you react and appreciate the music you enjoy, thanks for all you do for us oldies lovers
Greatest anthem to the greatest city in America.
wait...no justin beebers?
@@tjellis1479 If he made one, I never heard it. For which I'm grateful.
it's a leftist sh.thole now
I once heard someone say, "If you're not in New York, you're camping out."
Fine!!! 👍🏻😍😍😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Great!!!
LOOK HOW YOUNG HE LOOKED AT THIS ( 85 ) ALBUM 😊CLOSE TO 40 YEARS AGO NOW ANGELA! 😊 ALLLLL GREAT TRACKS ON THAT 85 ( GREATEST HITS ) DOUBLE ALBUM, IT'S 25 TRACKS! 😊
HEY BABY!!!😊 I SURE HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT FABULOUS THANKSGIVING, LOTSA STUFF TO BE THANKFUL FOR, MANY BLESSINGS, KEEP DOING WHAT YOU LOVE AND TAKE GOOD CARE ANGELA! 😊
Can’t go wrong with Billy Joel
If you liked this song, I recommend another by Billy Joel where he collaborates with Ray Charles, called Baby Grand. They are terrific together!
One of his better songs
Amazing reaction. Also your hair looks fantastic!
Try his song "Goodnight Saigon"
Life is a rock(But the radio rolled me)
How about Chicago with Peter Cetera doing Feelin Stronger Every Day live in the studio circa 1974
Hey there good looking… What’s cooking..? You need to do a reaction to Billy Joel song titled “The Stranger” and any songs from that old album. It’s really something… Take care. PhoenixOne
Oh cool, my name(Stefan) is one of the four requesters you put up on the screen, lol. That threw me off, I don't even remember doing that hahah. Love it though, great reaction to a great song.
Soulful.. If you want to go way back in the 70's my suggestion would be Captain Jack...OHH YEAA.. haha
Barbra Streisand did a stunning cover of this song.
Angela, Billy Joel is so multi-faceted, as you already know. But.....if you want to see Billy do something truly extraordinary, try his duet with Ray Charles titled, "Baby Grand". I do believe you'll enjoy it. 😇💖🌹🕊️
Piano Man va sempre ascoltato e visto dal vivo .... Poiché è il miglior talento in assoluto .... Da giovane un vero portento .... Unico artista che ha solo gioielli nel suo repertorio
You know you've written a new American classic when Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Mel Torme, and Barbra Streisand all decide to record their own version of it.
Billy Joel is a living legend. New York unfortunately, is dying; it's just not doing it as obviously as California, Portland and Chicago.
Texas singer Nanci Griffith has a great song called Lone Star State of Mind
Please do the live version!
One of my favorite songs but you must play a live performance for full artistic impact.
I've just commented that she needs to listen to a live version..preferably when he does his New York gigs.
Very Cool!
You played the very long intro version.
Billy should have stayed with this kind of jazz. I just never took to his more pop stuff. But this is truly genius!
Leonid & Friends
You must react to Billy and Ray Charles doing "My Baby Grand" together. You'll love it.
you should REALLY react to his song "Until the Night" (from the "52nd Street" album). one of his best songs, imho.
Some great live versions on YT if you want to check them out.
Mel Torme blew this song away! If you haven't heard his take on it you are missing out
I personally prefer the live rendition from Old Grey Whistle Test. The piano playing is more intricate and Billy uses more 'Ray Charles' in his voice. It's just Billy, piano, sax, and drums.
NYC: the City that Never Sleeps.
Try My Bady Grand by Billy Joel and Ray Charles.
Love that song..tbh I don't think I've listened to a Billy Joel song I don't like..
That's My Baby Grand.
This song was big again after 911
Sherriff & ALIAS
give Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel a try
Whenever you would get the time, you'd enjoy this live version of Billy performing this song from 1978...

Captain Jack
Actually, it is a love song to the state of New York. If you get a chance, you should visit upstate New York.
Naw! you upstate jokers always be tryna piggy back on NYC! Ain't nobody writing songs about upstate! GTFOH! LOL BRONX RULES!
Mark - Almond Band did a nice cover of this, also:
ua-cam.com/video/aLN_xA4Wcps/v-deo.html
Ah yes, they did. And for folks that don’t know the Mark-Almond band, check out “The City” it’s a great track with some dang good sax, among other things.
@@tedcole9936
Amen to that!
You were in a 'Billy Joel State Of Mind' and who could blame you?
