- From ChatGPT to Midjourney, it's clear A.I. (artificial intelligence) will change everything we do. And climate change and energy are two of the biggest things that we do. From understanding climate change, to developing new energy tech, and even building better climate policy, A.I. could mean huge amounts in our fight to stop global warming. But A.I. isn't a silver bullet, and there are a host of risks to relying to heavily on machine learning to tackle our problems for us.

It was an absolute pleasure working with you, Adam! Here is our second collab video on how AI can contribute to climate change - ua-cam.com/video/EapIRSBbUeM/v-deo.html
Thank you guys so much! I thought the 21 k subscriber comment was an early april fools joke. This channel has the quality of a 500 k subscriber channel. Keep up the good work!
ahah that's so kind! as I always say, if you want the channel to become overrated instead, feel free to share my vids far and wide!
Go Ankur!
"We", "humans", "humanity". SAY CAPITALISTS (A FRACTION OF 1% OF THE POPULATION) OR AT MOST THE IMPERIAL CORE CONSUMER BASE (AROUND 8-10% OF THE POPULATION). I *HATE* when scientists and science communicators in the west collectively blame people, who haven't even reaped the benefits of basic electricity, for their own impending g*nocide.
Other than that, great content! Love you and Ankur is one of the best young creators. Thank you for amplifying his voice! The back and forth format is worth the extra effort :)
you're right - using "we" is not specific. while it's true that we all contribute to climate change and we are all impacted by climate change, there's a huge imbalance between the "we"s in those two sentences - something I talk about explicitly in this channel (in fact my last video was effectively all about that!).
although - that said - I don't think it's true to say that only a fraction of 1% of the population is responsible for climate change. the richest 10% as a whole account for around 50% of emissions.
@@ClimateAdam omg I missed those videos. I'm so sorry for writing in caps lock you don't deserve my trauma dumping. Both are great, the sketches cracked me up and I can't even begin imagining how much work those shots with your duplicates in the same frame took. Keep up the great work!!
With that aside, I think the most fruitful thing to do now, instead of going back and forth on figures, or even explaining what I mean by "less than 1% of 10%", is directing you to the work of...
a) Jason W Moore -
He has written on the fundamental characterization of climate change in "anthropocene or capitalocene" (which adresses the "we" I initially commented on).
I highly recommend "Capitalism in the web of life" and "seven cheap things" and getting comfortable w his work in general.
If you're short on time and want a brief introduction, listen to the *Guerilla History* podcast episode "World ecology and the capitalocene" and if possible the *Upstream* "in conversation with raj patel and jason moore" epsiode.
b) Jason Hickel -
He has plenty of worl, but I like "less is more". It'll help you understand the historical development of capitalism and its relationship with climate change.
I believe another youtuber, "st. Andrewism", did a video essay summary of the book called "how degrowth can save the world" so if youre short on time watch that although I recommend reading the book (at least the first couple chapters for sure) and then watching the video for a refresher if anything.
As someone in STEM, I just want to say sometimes we focus too much purely on science (that's just how we're trained to do science), but the time for "apolitical" science, especially in fields entrenched in climate change has long passed. As I'm sure you know, capitalism's inherently unsustainable core tenet, infinite growth (on a finite planet) is the primary cause of this crisis. The IPCC itself has heavily implied that capitalism must be dismantled in order for even 2.5°C to be achieved, and I'm certain if the final draft was not vetted (neutered would be a better word) thoroughly by imperialist governments, it would have explicitly stated capitalism must be overthrown.
Finally, I want to ask who you have in mind for a political/ climate video. There are plenty of creators on this site, but many of them have the same malthusian/ ecofascist tendency you tried to address in your prior video on who is responsible. I would recommend reaching out to Second Thought, or even Hakim, both of whom can help you integrate your scientific knowledge with a robust analysis using scientific socialism.
Again, keep up the great work! I'll do everything to boost your algo
@@ClimateAdam I know it's hard to constantly be more accurate when it comes to pointing out who is doing the harm while still trying to focus on what the harm is, etc., but "we" all should try and make that change so we know who to go after to make the change, instead of just making ourselves and others feel guilty and hopeless. We are used to feeling one with humanity but the people who are screwing us don't feel that way.
A few potential applications; grid management, chaos control for plasma confinement fusion, flight control for airborne wind energy(e.g. autonomous drones utilizing regenerative dynamic soaring )
A.I is powerful, but it is also a double-edged sword we must wield wisely
that is such an excellent summary of this whole topic!
If humans were wise, we wouldn't be so tragically far into overshoot.
How could it be bad? Only if it’s trained to be propaganda instead of honest
The statement there is enough for everyone’s need not for everyone’s greed still stands. Overconsumption will not be fixed by ai.
that statement really captures it - I'll remember that!
6:42 😂 the phrasing makes it sound like your teacher was physically beating you with a calculator
Please go on. Your vids are sooooooooooooo important.
AI brings us unbeleaviable and incredible advantages - great! but we should not forget to add a pricetag (carbon emission) on every single of their services.
Well said!!
Thanks Adam for the discovery, I am checking out Ankur's channel right now, and it looks very interesting :)
I agree with the general argument, but I am a bit more skeptical with the third point, about AI being able to summarize climate legislations adopted around the world... The unfortunate thing is, legislation is often badly written, sometimes intentionally (in order to generate PR benefits without too much legal effect), and there is often a discrepancy between the law on the books and its application (cf. WWF's "Where did all the money go?" report about how 14 member states fail to follow the ETS Directive recommendation to spend at least 50% of their ETS revenue on climate action)... So I guess you could emphasized that legal and social scientist have an essential role in these regards, even if *they* could certainly use AI to make these comparative analysis easier.
Anyway, thanks for the video, heading to the next one ! :)
you're absolutely right - I don't in any way mean to argue that legal and social scientists will be out of a job! but rather that AI could be one of the tools that they use. in fact what I was describing is a project started by social scientists!
climatepolicyradar.org/
@@ClimateAdam Indeed, I assumed you were certainly not arguing that AIs will dispense us of the need for researchers ;)
Thanks for the link, will check that out !
I totally imagined Adam's maths teacher throwing calculators at him during maths classes.
i feel that you deserve at least 1 million subscribers
you are informative, entertaining and funny with a very important comprehensive message in layman's language, backed by a climate PHD from oxford, which makes you the perfect media-climate science communicator
Ive seen/heard you on 2 or 3 MSM shows (financial times? economist? i believe was one in the last few months) addressing climate change issues. I feel you should be the David Attenborough of climate change
Here's to celebrating your first 21.5k subscribers and hoping it will avalanche and compound into what you truly deserve👍🤞🥂
thanks so much, Kim - that's lovely to hear!
The one of the main things standing in the way of dealing with climate change is that we still allow people to make profits off destroying the environment. We don't need AI to point that out.
Does not need Ai or chat gpt to know that it's game over. Who can rescue who when climate chaos is global.
I think AI should be used to give good suggestions regarding climate change rather than solving it for us.
Interesting video!
Was gonna make a snarky comment about how we already know what causes climate change and what we need to do to stop it (just not how to convince policy makers and corporations to actually do it), but those weather prediction models sound like they could at least prevent some harm!
Well, I just made that snarky comment for you!
Well, stupid doesn’t capture our behaviour. Greedy is probably most fitting. If we had an AI figure out a definitive way to stop climate change, which involves setting limitations on us, we’d still try to avoid it, for as long as possible. Perhaps even longer.
I have the same book that is on Ankur’s shelf. Gai’s Garden.
Wow! Glad you noticed that - it’s one of my favorite books on permaculture
Thank you for your video! I am into machine learning lately and I find this very inspiring 😊
ahh that's so cool to hear - I hope you find ways to use the techniques as a positive force 🦾
I believe AI could be a powerful tool to help us understand how soils work. We are currently using incomplete 3D maps, there's a long way to go and a lot to gain.
oo interesting idea! I *bet* soil modellers are already starting to use these tools.
Thanks!! Your videos shouldn't be niche, at all, they should be as generally well-known as makeup and social commentary videos are!(obviously)
You're doing great!💚💚💚
P.s.And I so agree about the open science bit
Spot on guys! Congrats for this video, this cuts through a lot hype that has been going around AI. I believe AI has a great potential to speed up research and development processes to create better environmental solutions, humans have limited knowledge about unintended consequences of establishing new products and services, for example electric cars are good to reduce emissions, but these are creating new problems with increased energy demand and also demand of rare materials, the mining of these materials create environmental problems and social problems in other countries. The power of AI can help us to see the big picture and foresee what consequences of launching x product or service could be in the long term.
May I recommend a book: ‘Resisting AI, An Antifascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence’ by Dan Mcquillan. Published recently by University of Bristol Press. Excellent for throwing cold water over AI hype, and it’s grounded in the current politics of austerity
I do hope our ai overlords will force us to do something.
so valuable, thanks guys, and keep the collabs coming, so educational AND entertaining :)))
thanks Lucas!
AI can help to shift consumption at all by reducing overproduction, unnecessary stockpiling and therefore waste. And this means that we can do much better with our resources and energy. With all the current possibilities of data collection AI can predict and plan supply and production chains - on demand.
Planned economy in short. I think if part of the economy is no longer market-driven, but planned, it could have a big impact on our emissions.
What a welcome addition to YT! :)
what a welcome comment, Roger!
So much energy into futile detailing and predicting and so little into what would really make the difference - forcing the money men to stop their selfish destruction of our world.
It took me ages to get microsofts chatbot to admit the future is not rosy , i had to ask it to compare past pledges with actual climate data for those years and ask it why the future would be different , it then just linked me to worse case scenario sites instead of endless we can fix this messages . Worse on politics , after querying Palestinian issues it refused to chat and apologized for not being able to interact .
Great Team Collaboration & Presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Many hands make light work 💪🏽
teamwork makes the dream work!
@@ClimateAdam Or … Dreamwork is teamwork … 😉… Always a pleasure Sir ❕
So glad to hear! Thanks a lot for watching 😊
@@AnkurShah Wishing You Continued Success ❕
You know Adam, I think I'd rather worry about a possible future where AI destroys humanity which is not supported by actual data because we can't predict the future, rather than the clear and present danger of our actions that influence climate change. It's not logical but it's human and stupid and that's what resonates with me. Thanks!
Thank you for the work you do. You have been helping find simpler and more relatable ways to talk about climate change.
I want to request you to please not using ableist slurs like 'd*mb', 's*upid', i*iot etc to describe undesirable human behaviour. People believe they are harmless insults but even though they are no longer used to officially diagnose mentally ill, Neurodivergent or non speaking people, we are still called by those names or treated in ways that those slurs imply.
thanks a lot for your comment and your input - I'll try to be more mindful of the language I use and the effects it has in future.
I asked ChatGPT the same thing. It's answer was disappointing along a, "change your light bulbs" kind of thing. It's got a long ways to go.
how many artificial intelligence does it take to change a light bulb...?
@@ClimateAdam how many
AI and ML is used quite well in China for factory efficiency
Ankur sent me......................subscribed.
welcome!
I like it.
Adam when will you ever talk about the core issue of all of this which is capitalism?
it's such an important topic - I would love to make a video specifically discussing why some argue the best way to tackle climate change is within the capitalist system that created the issue, while others argue that it would be necessary to dismantling this economic system.
as I am no political scientist or economist, I would definitely want to team up with someone to give the discussion the depth and accuracy it deserves - something I've been hoping to do for some time. I actually have someone in mind... watch this space!
@@ClimateAdam who do you have in mind? so many polisci or econ creators on this platform just push traditional capitalist views as objective science despite both fields being humanities - economists love pretending they're science bros and not in the arts LMAOO
@@ClimateAdam You might investigate Doughnut Economics, it's an updated approach to economics that addresses human and environmental issues. Also Tony Seba's Rethinking Humanity could be useful.
I guess AI is indeed a good solid way forward, I mean given the right hardware it can withstand why harsher conditions then we can and with a bit of luck it's even more intelligent and from an evolutionary point of view the next big step. We can go down with a nice smile to have something that carries a bit of us, our culture, to the future. So indeed I'm carefully optimistic in that case.
By decades he means over a century
We could also use AI to improve carbon capture technology.
Imagine if we could pull out more carbon than we use.
Hi Adam, would you be able to recommend any primary research papers for hard-hitting evidence of anthropomorphic driven climate change?
for sure - the entire field of detection and attribution would be a good place to start!
anthropomorphic (form of a person) or anthropogenic (caused by people)?
@@Will-kt5jk Sorry the word I was looking for was anthropogenic.
Man I need to become a millionaire so I can help fix without being poor and being able to own land to reforest.
There's a catch though. In order to become a millionaire or rich you have to loose or will loose in the process, such ideas. Instead your going to be wired for grabbing more money for grabbing sake. Threes ample evidence that eco minded high-school grads who go into economics come out as ecocidal maniacs by the time they graduate with this growth mindset being the biggest one of them
Can AI crack chemistry problems yet? For example can it calculate how to increase the quantity of hydroxyl radicals in Earth's atmosphere to break down more of the atmospheric methane content? Can it formulate new chemistry bonds including expanding the range of covalent bonds applicable to CO2 (in order to bind it into some other carbon related atomic structure to drawdown troublesome levels of atmospheric CO2? If AI can't do these things then clearly its encyclopedic language bank does not extend to being creatively clever in physics/chemistry fields - an "intelligence" shortfall.
Well, human intelligence hasn't done it, so might as well give AI a try!
Almost EVERY A.I. movie ever made has it controlling or just eliminating the human race.
So I guess it could tackle climate change.
there's a fixation on the threat A.I. could pose to humanity as a whole - I think a lot of people think of things like the Matrix or Terminator. but few actual researchers are genuinely concerned about these threats. the real threat is what we're already seeing today - A.I. being used to oppress and concentrate power in the hands of the very few. one of the most interesting interviews I've ever carried out was when I spoke to Meredith Whittaker on this topic!
Only 20-something k subscribers?!?
AI is overwhelmingly going to be used as a tool for austerity and division, because that’s the political context in which it has been created
4:05
Absolutely. AI presents all kinds of threats to our safety and identity, but it might be exactly what we need if it can galvanise us around solutions to climate change etc.
If AI is outside anyone political system or party and is seen to be it could bring nations together especially if there are strong proven results that start to emerge.
@@grgmetube I think that's a very high bar to hope for, although I do hold hope that AI might start spewing-out good solutions to climate change etc that would be hard for world leaders to keep avoiding.
One of the first and most fundamental problems with AI is the 'alignment' issue, which means you have to actually give it very well chosen and specific goals, styles, ethics etc in order for it to function optimally and hopefully not dangerously. It becomes very nuanced fast. Even Chat GPT had to be 'de-racist-ified' because it was deemed to be deriving too much inspiration from our bad human behaviour on the web.
Slight adjustments to a global AI's alignment could have big local/regional implications worth fighting over.
@@mikefoster6018 I suppose that might be the case. It could be very hard to align AI so that it is acceptable to all nations and cultures. Who has a monopoly on correctness?
Dear all, does anyone know a trustworthy science-based CO2 emission calculator for traveling?
I can't recommend any in particular, but I would say if you're flying, I'd consider doubling whatever the CO2 result is, for reasons discussed in this vid:

@@ClimateAdamthank you for your suggestion and the great video.
Commenting for the algorithm
If we are runni g out of minerals to make mobiles how are we going to grow AI bots machinery ect????
I am thinking of going for a computer science master's degree. Can I pursue my career in climate related field??
there are definitely looooads of applications of computer science to climate change - not just A.I. related
The one precenters gonna feed of AI! The rest sees as lasy drifter's! /Mikael
Good start. Soon there will people who are good at AI and people left in their dust. What we need right now is early training videos on using AI tools to work on Climate Change problems. I spend three years writing a couple CC novels. I could do them now at one a month. Will they be better? Maybe after I have written a few. AI can make good team members, but they make bad ghost writers and even worst bosses.
This comment could have been made by an AI wanting to influence the UA-cam algorithm to promote this video.
Intelligence is not the problem. There is more than enough of that. Wilful ignorance and pathologically greedy people with money and power, on the other hand ....
I for one support an ai overlord such as the one featured in the original Deus Ex. It could hardly do worse than the self serving idiots we have now
algorithm boosting comment.
AI is actually very stupid. I asked it how to solve climate change and all it said was "42". How can it help us when it doesn't even understand the question?
Edit: Oh dear. I tried to rephrase the question. I asked it how to remove CO2 from the air and how to create clean energy but it just told me the problem is to do with population. I asked if it thought there should be less people and it said no, there should be fewer. Then I asked how many people does it think there should be in the world and it said forty two.
The longer we discuss the the intellectual implications of this and that the more impotent we become, the more pointless the talk, the more sterile the message without practical meaning.
Humans are not stupid! Stop saying that. We create tools and we have improved life tremendously in the last 100 years. You need to bring in more people to share the AI experience and the creative nature of humans will solve this problem. By calling them stupid, it just shows you know nothing. Or are you trying to argue the more you know the less you know? I guess Oxford was a waste of time on you.
The system is rigged, if you don't put that into the equation you are chasing ghosts.
AI is not your friend. This seems so backwards and totally foolish. Like so much going on now. So much energy into going the wrong direction
