In this video, we take look at some awesome emulators running natively on the Oculus Quest 2 also known as the Meta Quest 3. We test out PS2 using AetherSX2, Gamecube using the Dolphin emulator, N64 using RetroArch, and PSP using PPSSPP. The Quest 3 to is powered by a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 CPU backed by 8GB of ram and overall it's a pretty powerful stand-alone VR headset the best part is it runs Android so side loading our favorite emulator is pretty easy.

I want for someone to make a reasonably priced and easy to set up Virtual Arcade where you can walk into an arcade, see the cabinets and play whatever arcade games you want. It would be like Launchbox or Hyperspin, but in a Tilt or Showtime family arcade center. That would be really cool for VR
New Retro Arcade: Neon.... this is on steam. It's kinda like what you are looking for.
EMUVR has been scratching that itch for me. Small project with a single dev, so updates are slow, but it's essentially a VR retroarch interface.
I don’t remember the name but I see a image in Twitter with similar thing you describe in development for Vision Pro
Look up Age of Joy on sidequest
EmuVR is close.
Insane, i just searched for this and there you are once again saving my day ^^
From the brief research and testing I did it seems like Skyline Switch emulator works on the Quest 3. I tried Super Mario Wonder and it seemed to run at about 45 FPS, but I haven't touched any of the settings so there might be some more optimization you can do. Also someone else mentioned installing the Adreno Turnip drivers for Yuzu and it should work afterwards without the black screen, but I haven't tested that yet.
I’d love to see Wiimote type functionality in Quest VR. Also 3DS in 3D would be awesome and touch style controls for [3]DS. Emulating both Wii U screens would be cool too. And of course having proper gun controls in MAME
You won't, at least through Dolphin. The main app's developers recently shut down a native Quest port by the same guy who ported PPSSPP natively to the Quest (with full VR support, not covered here by ETA prime, which feels quite facepalm-inducing if you ask me). Nice people, truly.
By the way, for arcade light gun emulation, go get Age of Joy for free. Only covers older sprite-based games as it's based on the mame 2003 plus core but we have quite a few well known games made available already and a few others in the works (I made several of them and am personally working on cabinets for Steel Gunner and its sequel now, but daily work and now a nasty bout of COVID keep getting in the way).
I've tried 3DS through Citra and Virtual Desktop and it was pretty good. Worth a try for sure.
Eta prime doing a service to all gamers and nerds out here. Thanks for what you do!
This is the quest 3 video I've been waiting for :D
Keep the Quest 3 videos coming! Being able to sideload Android APKs would be amazing!
Just follow a Quest 2 sidequest installation tutorial. It's exactly the same process.
Yoo bro ! how do you make your video still ? like in VR like this ?? like still frame ? :D i need this and thanks for the video super dope. i love this. gotta try it
Doesn't the psp emulator have vr mode?
How did you get dolphin to run properly? I'm trying simpsons hit and run and nothing loads past the initial splash screen. I also noticed the fans didn't kick on so I presume it's not doing much/choking
BUT CAN IT RUN CRYSIS?
The pass-through mode on the quest 3 uses SIGNIFICANTLY MORE cpu and gpu, so not ideal when running on battery
Does Launchbox, RetroX work with Q3 or cloud gaming in GFN or MS GamePass work?
How does Citra run on this thing?
Thumbs up, wasn't expecting this video. Dont underestimate Saturn emulation, VF will bring a lot of devices to their knees. Can you do a reshade video showing some games running in 3d and your opinion?
Great content, as usual. Could you please test older games on the Legion GO? (Windows XP and Vista games). I am particularly worried about the Portrait display, which may cause issues. Thanks!
We neee more quest 3 videos from ETA and also quick tutorial (like how install this emus) 🙌
Awesome, do make more Quest 3 emulation content please!
Can you VR some light gun games? T2, Operation Wolf, arcade stuff etc
Thanks 😁
I'm surprised you didn't search for the Virtual Boy emulator to try on the Quest 3. Sure, the thing can likely handle the Virtual Boy, but as a platform that required a headset, not covering seems like a missed opportunity. That and the emulator allows to change the LED color from red to something easier on the eyes.
Virtual Boy and 3DS emulators! I ran citra and a virtual Boy emulator on my 3d tv. It's pretty rad! I guess you could use Google cardboard and your phone to much of the same end.
Virtual Boy emulation is why i waited until i got a Quest 2 last year so i could experience those games as they were meant to be seen.
Eh, "required" is an exaggeration, playing those games on a flat screen isnt really any different
@@alfiegordon9013wario game plays with perspective and without 3d it could be hard to tell where your character are.
@@vadnegru not especially, I mean it just moves him between the foreground and background later, at the end of the day it was on a flat screen in the virtual boy to begin with. There's definitely something to be said for VR emulation but I honestly don't think that virtual boy games need any kind of headset at all to be played
Is it possible to plug in a wired usb c Xbox controller into the headset? or must it be bluetooth.
respect for this video!
I would love to see it in passthrough.
I'm sure it must be possible but would be fun to actually see.
An update with Switch, Wii and Dolphin in passthrough maybe?
Saw another channel that had more features of quest 3. Its pretty cool with its augmented ability reality
@eta prime can you play 2 players with the quest 3 with the emulators
The reason it was black screening on YUZU was because of display drivers, you can try to change the display drivers by sideloading one like turnip drivers Mesa 3D. It will get you better FPS too
I just tested with the latest "Qualcomm driver v744.12" and can confirm that we now have a working Tears of the Kingdom, at a very very good FPS.
@@edgecrush3r744.12 you say? I hope it works for me. It’s 3wks later and I’ve uploaded the latest version of those drivers from GitHub, same issue as OP.
Imagine a custom bedroom based on the console your playing kinda like the Sega Collection they did with the bedroom as the hub. That would just do it for me
you dont have to imagine look up emuvr
That's basically what EmuVR is, but that's only on PC currently
You can try some turnip drivers with skyline emulator (switch) or wait for strato emulator.
I know that the original quest had a 3DOF mode (no moving, just head turning). for that you had to disable the guardian in the developer settings and turn off any light source (just sit in the dark).
im not sure if the quest 3 still has that feature, but i think that would squeeze just a bit more performance out of the cpu, since it doesn´t have to do any calculations in the background to where you are in your room anymore. (also a blank enviroment could also help just a bit)
My quest 2 is switching to that mode in the dark. Only negative thing is that picture drifts with a time, so you need to keep right controller to recalibrate from time to time
I know this is an old video but my quest 2 does the same thing with retroarch with the resize. It crashes but it comes back in the size you make it
Good stuff. 👍
PPSSPP VR via Sidequest ks a game changer..... Turns PSP games into vr!
WHAT???
Does it actually upload all your computer's content to Facebook, when you turn on this thing?
Didn’t expect much from this
Could you test compatibility between the Quest 3 and the Steam Deck? I've seen some UA-camrs testing it with the Quest 2, but I'd love to see if it's even able to sync to the Deck, and if it can, would it be able to stream games well into the VR environ?
ALVR could potentially work but I'd argue that VR quality would be on par or even better with Q3 alone.
Yo u should do a whole video on 3dSen , PPSSPPVR and EmuVR
How about eggns. I'm curious of how it will perform on quest 3
Can you use the quest controllers for wii emulation?
Only so-so. You can, but very clunkily.
PPSSPP has a vr version.
there is a vr port of ppsspp, its amazing. you can play psp games in full stereo with it, some games even support 360 view
Indeed. For a video of this kind from such a well known channel -to which I'm subscribed myself- to omit so many native emulators, including the PPSSPPVR, C64 and Virtual Boy ones, is really disappointing.
@oscarjimenezgarrido7591 yea Kinda expected it too. Didn't say the virtual boy emulator cause he doesn't really do retro emulation, but I totally expected at least ppsspp vr. I mean it's a no brainer
@@uncraftbar
Well, the Virtual Boy is a retro console so its emulator runs retro games by definition. But yeah, too many omissions in this video to not nitpick about them, specially Age of Joy, even if that's retro too - but let's be honest, also are most of the other emulators cited here.
Thanks for raising up PPSSPP VR. I did the VR integration and it does hurt when videos like this doesn't include it.
I personally use RetroArch for PSP inside PPSSPP VR (it runs flat only but it is cool to have use it with Quest controllers).
@LubosV oh Wow crazy. You did a great job with the vr port. I can imagine that it hurts that it isn't included here. You really did a amazing job with that ngl. And yea I'm also sad that many vr emulators weren't included here.
I wish there was an option to emulate wiimote with the vr controller to get the motion controls easily.
That would actually integrate really well. Since Dolphin is open source might be awhile for a developer to add support for it for andriod
It's not exactly open source actually, and fact is there was already a developer (the guy who ported PPSSPP and Prey to the Quest) working on a native port of Dolphin and he had to stop because he got a cease & desist from Dolphin's main developers for some odd reason.
is the Snapp Dragon 8 gen 3 more powerful
Nicely done, as always! 👏 Ist there a way to Set up the Meta Quest as motion Controllers for the Wii? This would be So closed to the original experience 🤩 Greetings from Bavaria!
i would also love to know! now i gotta bust out my quest 2 to test this out lol
It was possible before QuestOS version V51 which broke the API. Now it works on Pico headsets only with DolphinXR fork.
Thats a pitty! Hopefully somebody with the knowledge fixes it for the quest due to its popularity.
@@marxNukID the UI would have to be completely rewritten because of the missing API. It is unlikely that someone would do that. It is a huge amount of work.
Too bad that i found out only now. I had quest 2 since v46 and didn't try the emulators😢
Man cant wait for my Quest 3, you can also connect it to your PC and play SteamVR Games right?
True, there are many ways to go, wired or wireless, free or paid. My setup is dedicated router with Virtual Desktop.
Can you please make a video about it with the ROG ALLY best FPS settings for CS2 and Valorant. I can't get above 100 FPS in dock mode
You know i never thought about doing emulation on the quest... but it seems to me that if possible it would be a great wii emulator and I'd love to play some of the games I had for that system again.
I wonder if there's anyway to put any other os on the quest?
Its possible but it wouldn’t be easy because the fact you look through lens instead of a traditional screen
That fps tracker for dreamcast absolutely reminds me of fraps 😂
Funnily enough, there are ports of PPSSPP and Citra to Quest Headsets that allow full 6DoF Emulation and it's CRAZY
I might get the 2 instead dont mind a used one. This is very well done thank you
Used quest 2 is a good gateway to VR, but after using it for some time blurry corners become annoying.
Can you setup and run launchbox/bigbox? Once the emulators get straightened out launchbox would be amazing
@EtaPrime I'm sure you figured it out, but I was having the same issue with Retroarch not sizing for the longest time. I didn't realize the shink / distance button in the Quick Console was a defining thing. In Shrink, it does not resize. Distance mode does! Now you have to explain how you got Redream working without it crashing when trying to select the "free" mode. When I do, it crashes. Using the latest version...
theres an app called dex max that launches apps in its own scalable window, might be worth a try
Wish you could play light gun games in aethersx with a quest controller as a guncon.
They’re is a Vr version for pssppp is on sidequest and also for 3DS is called citraVr (beta)
Sideload DeX MAX and run Retroarch through that to prevent crashing when resizing the screen.
I’ll have to try that. I was going to say using a launcher like Lightning Launcher and launching RetroArch within that fixes the aspect ratio problem.
how do you get the xbox controller to connect? I was able to get it connected via both bluetooth and wired and still no luch with it actually playing the game only controling the emulator menu. Anyone know what to do?
Tried alot of emus on the quest 3 cannot get one to work.tried an Nvidia shield one.a steel series and a Ouya one...no joy.
a 3D rendering mod would be cool to have with 3D consoles that makes the rendered image have depth but this would require more performance
Could you make a tutorial like the xbox series for the quest ?
I wonder how good SLR will be from Quest 3
Is there a video on how to install?
I did an emulator run through and found the Q3 to have major issues with stutter (that doesn't appear to be shader stutter), I have been waiting for someone to dig into emulation on the Q3 and hopefully highlight what was going on with it but the issue was not mentioned here. For example Sonic Adventure 2 is unplayable for me due to constant stuttering, along with monkey ball 2 on dolphin, most things in redream / dolphin have major stuttering for me, but this video is saying Sonic Adventure 2 runs well, does the licenced version of redream have performance benefits or could my Q3 not be performing properly?
Try to set more static or black background. Or try again in the dark with tracking disabled.
@@vadnegru I have tried a bunch of environments, including the same one shown in this video, disabled hand tracking, Sonic Adventure 2 stutters regularly every time I run it, if a bunch of specific settings were required just to make it playable i'm sure they would have been stated in the video, I would really like to know if anyone else is getting these stutters.
@@Steven.Knapmanwhat backend are you using? Vulcan or OpenGL?
@@christianr.5868 I haven't seen any options in redream to adjust render backend
I don't know how meta quest apks work but maybe see if you can some how gets skyline on there, I've had great performance but some visual bugs with skyline over yuzu
3:21 u might be able to fix this by launching retroarch through an app like dex max which automatically launches in an expanded window mode
We need more Lenovo legion go content dude love all your content and have amazing coverage of basically everything though 😁
Already beat you ETA haha :P Nice video!
is there any android emulator for xbox games? maybe xbox 360 too. i know batocera uses xenia for xboox and xbox 360...
As far as I know, there are no Xenia port for android
It don’t think it’s powerful enough to do that but you could run xeno on your pc and connect the headset to your pc
OMG Can you play light gun games like Ghost Squad in Dolphin doing this?
i don’t understand how you have installed apps and emulators
It's android so you just install the apk

Can dolphin run in 3d?
I didn't realize there was an Android build of Yuzu, should have tested Skyline. I tried out Skyline, not much, but I did get Metroid Dread running on it and it was butter smooth. Gonna have to do some more testing and see what else works.
EDIT: Got a bit further in to the video and there is a workaround for some of these apps crashing when you resize them. Either wait a good while, like a minute or 2 after launching the app before resizing, or resize and then immediately minimize the app and reopen it. Works just fine.
Skyline is no longer updated, developers moved to Wine based PC games emulation. Maybe one day we could run Crysis on Quest, that would be hilarious.
@@vadnegru Bummer since it actually booted and played several games well. I could definitely get down with Crysis on Quest 3 though. 😂
I don't know why you didn't look into the stereoscopic 3D aspects of emulators? Flat screen in VR seems pointless
Could you actually show any kind of guidance as to how you got the emulation to run? There's no guides online I can easily find, and it's getting annoying.
Does PS Vita emulator work?
Please test performance in passthrough!
Motion sickness city for me with free motion video like this filling my vision. Anything bigger than a TV.
Dramamine is your friend!
@@lockmuertosYou take Dramamine before looking at a big display. 🤔
Aethersx2 is basically dead, but you are able to compile your own version of Nethersx2, with qol updates ever so often. PS2 emulation on android is still going strong :)
EMUVR is also a great way to emulate old consoles in VR. But you need a PC.
I use EMUVR with Virtual Desktop. Dream come true.
I'd love to see a native EmuVR app for Quest
I'd love to see ETA playing around with this. It's an emulation dream!
Ps1 emulator work?
Try citra 3d mode and skyline 69, and dolphin 3d mode on super mario galaxy 2
Duckstation keeps stuttering for me. Can someone advise what I'm doing wrong?
Can you do a set up guide for aethersx2
can you runnig tiny 11 in rog ally?
My games keep freezing for second then playing again idk how to stop it
Maybe some 3D testing with Dolphin and Citra
This video covers native emulation. 3D doesn't work in 2D, sideloaded android emus - they display both images for the left and right eye separately on a floating 2D screen, so the 3D effect gets lost.
PLEASE CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO HOW TO SET UP CONTROLLER FOR WII DOLPHIN EMULATOR ON THE QUEST 3 STAND
What emulator us he using for ps2? He is saying ethersx2? did he mean aethersx2? Or nethersx2?
Aether

I thought i would be able to overclock android apps with quest game optomizer but no.
Dolphin Emulator doesn't work for me on meta quest 3
Can you use an external hard drive with the quest 3?
No… hopefully someone finds a work around i know the Usb c port does data transfer so it’s possible with the hardware but they’ve got it blocked so people buy the model with more storage. The 125 gb model gives you 100gb ago work with once you subtract the storage needed for the os so you can load it up with a decent amount of games but the 512gb is best if you want to have space for actual be games and emulated games
Hey how did you get the emulators on the quest? Thank you

@@christianr.5868 what did you search cause I feel dumb searching for AetherSX2
Does Sidequest work? If so, could you try the Quakes and Dooms?
Of course it does. That's how they got all the android emulators you see in this video working.
@@oscarjimenezgarrido7591 So the source ports work too (Quake, Doom 3, Duke Nukem...)?

Can you get apps like PSPlay to stream PS5 to it?
You can get it to work, but it’s not ideal.
@@beeseechurgerIf there is no alternative, the sole option is the ideal option
@@xiancastillo well…no. The only option can still be the non-ideal option. The ideal option is the best outcome, which can be unavailable.
They are bringing official xbox Gamepass to it so PlayStation is probably not too far off from getting official support. You can always side load the Android version of the app if you'd like
The android version of the xbox app works perfectly on the Quest 2 for me over 5G. Crisp image, no lag.
Okay, I've had a bit of success here. Retroarch work fine for me. You just have to use a launcher found in sidequest called lightning launcher. Once you're inside lightning launcher you can open retroarch and resize the window. I wish citra emulator would allow me to do 3d natively. To do citra in 3d you need to use your computer and bigscreen/ half sbs.
Thank you so much my guy.
Those controllers are probably perfect for virtualboy 🙂
Xcloud, Steam Link or Gforce now would be great
Does playing in passthrough make these games not run good?
Technically it does but it’s not really noticeable on any of the emulators expect the switch and dolphin games
PPSSPP is in its own league now that it added stereo and VR rendering options
Try skyline for switch emulation Yuzu is a bit picky
