When Tim took the classic blue & grey bat suit (& combined it with his bow staff I believe?) I was elated as a lifelong Tim Drake fan … and then he meets up with Jason, man that hurt reading that lol 🤦🏻♂️
Pretty sure Nightwing's reason for not becoming batman was stated during the story. He wasn't "chickening" out on being batman as the video seems to imply. Batman told him that he should not take up the mantle, that there didn't need to be a Batman and Robin, but rather that Nightwing and Robin could handle Gotham. Dick chooses not to become Batman because Bruce asked him not to and he respects that. It isn't until Jason and all the villains prove that Batman -- a good Batman -- needs to be around to manage Gotham that Dick decides to finally take up the cowl, despite Bruce's request.
Actually, I didnt say he was chickening out. Batman's will is that Nightwing take up the mantle, I thought of it as more of a he didnt want to do it out of respect for Bruce. Like he couldnt BE Bruce, so he didnt want to tarnish the name of Batman like Jason does during the storyline.
You're right, "chickening" is probably the wrong word, but the video does kinda give off the feeling that Nightwing doesn't feel capable of being Batman. Batman's will, though, is that Dick remain Nightwing and not become Batman. He tries to follow through on that, but because Batman's name is being tarnished by Jason, Dick takes it upon himself to become Batman so that it can't be tarnished by anyone else. This he does against Batman's will.

+BorisCroire I don't think it's ever started in any of the comics that Bruce doesn't want Dick to become Batman. (if it is, can you reference the issue/scan of the page? I'd like to know.) Bruce is proud of the hero Nightwing and acknowledged that Dick made that mantle his own. Dick is about hope and doing what you can to help others and that's not very "Batman" who's about fear and vengeance. But Bruce, being Bruce, has a contingency plan and Dick fits the qualifications for a Batman he can count on out of the Batfamily (he will NOT make another Azriel mistake!) Tim is a great detective but in this time line he's sill quite green and is still wobbly at leading. Jason is an emotional loose cannon and Damian (a side from being too young) hasn't even had proper Robin training. (which Dick does in his run). The batgirls/batwomen have always been independent of the Bat to take leadership and often don't agree with the methods Batman uses. The only real choice is Dick. He has all the training, is also quite a detective (though not to the extent of Bruce and Tim but not shabby!), has super strong moral values which will make it so he will do what he can to preserve human life unless absolutely necessary, and has experience leading (Teen Titans) so he'd be able to rally the Bat family if needed.
The fact is, Bruce knows that Dick as Nightwing is more suited to him. The kid was raised in a circus. He needs the spotlight but when push comes to shove, he knows he can count of Dick for anything and everything and knows that Dick will sacrifice everything for him even if they disagree on things. Tim is the loyal son. Damian is the blood son, Jason is the son by fire and Dick is the good son.

I just went through the game saying "oh hey it's Jason" the entire time until the reveal, did a sarcastic "oh no it's Jason " then proceeded to do that frankly disappointing boss fight. Like they could've taken a page from the original story when even after Bruce knew it was him he still gave him an ass kicking, while in the game we got: sneak, grapple, beg him to stop and repeat. My point is their use of Jason wasn't that surprising or satisfying at all imo but the concept of Arkham knight and the army was cool wish they could find a way to adapt it for comics where it isn't Jason behind the mask but helping to fight or fighting against the person who is.
you should do the Red Robin story that sort of ties in to this

Isn't this the second time Jason fought Tim and won ?? I vividly remember their brutal showdown at Titans Tower when Jason confronted Tim over who between them was the better Robin.
After over 70 years I think Bruce Wayne dying and being succeeded permanently by the original Robin is something the non-comic reading batman fanbase could happily accept and get used to. I know I could have, sounds like an awesome idea.
Dick becoming Batman was seriously something I was excited for. He earned it and owned it for the short time. But DC just couldn't commit to a new status quo.
if batman/gotham were a novel series, with actual arcs and endings, dick WOULD become batman. but because things refresh, and batman is symbolic, bruce wayne can never go away for good.

"Batman's will stated that Dick Grayson should take over as Batman, if anything should ever happen to him." ...But... wait, in the very same comic, Battle for the Cowl, it is stated that (Nightwing's inner thoughts;) "....I refused to take on the role of my mentor...because it's what he asked me to do. In his final message to me, Bruce ordered me to stay away from the cape and the cowl. And I listened. He said he had enough fate in Nightwing and Robin to carry the torch."
