    Demo of the YAMAHA DX7IIFD digital synthesizer (frequency modulation synthesis) from 1987. I played it along with a Dynacord DRP 20 (reverb) and sometimes with a Korg SDD-3000 (delay).
    The DX7II(F)D was the successor of the classic DX7 from 1983. This unit has the GREY MATTER E! expansion board installed, which was produced in the USA from 1987 to 1989. Even today it adds a lot of useful, additional capabilities to the DX7II(F)D/S. You get 256 RAM memories for patches, 8x multitimbrality (like the Yamaha TX802), chord memory, arpeggiator, a 16-track pattern sequencer (much like the Ensoniq ESQ-1's sequencer) and assignable sliders (assignable to most parameters of the sound engine - frequencies, envelopes, feedback level, operator output levels...).
    Without a doubt, this expansion is a "must have" for real DX7II fans.

    This synth can't make a bad sound , It's almost not possible. Dark moody haunting and scarily amazing. The warmest chills.

    Bought mine new in 87-88. Toured for years with same modifications. Can’t remember but I must have traded it in the 90’s. Brings back so many memories. Thanks 👍

      I inhereted mine from my uncle in 90 when I was 13 years old. He bought it because of all the popularity, then hated he couldn't figure out how to program it. I had a lousy portasound before that, so this was a serous upgrade and I still have it to this day. installed the E! in the 2000s sometime, and fell in love with it all over again. Hard to say if I prefer it over my SY77, they are both different animals.

      FM theory is quite simple and easy to understand compared with other things. Programming is anyway via experimentation, but it's useful to know what a carrier and modulator does

    Sure, we all loved the original, only I despised the brown color. The DX7 II FD was my first polyphonic Synth and gigging workhorse for 35 years. I wish it had more Keys like the Centennial model. It still works to this very day but I never did get a chance to have the E! board installed. Then Grey Matter went out of business. I know some of these boards are still around but how do you know that they're in working condition?

    As far as I can see none of the features demonstrate any "E!" extension features. I have an unmodified DX7 II-D and I can do all this. The assignable CS1/CS2 sliders are not an E! feature, every stock DX7 Mk.2 can do that. I was hoping for a demonstration of the sequencer, the chord memory, voice stacking or multitimbrality.

    I just got my E! Card installed, and while I love the real time control features I've been having trouble with the octal mode I can't seem to get it to work, I've set each induvidual polyphony to 2 as instructed in the manual but I'm not getting that complex 8 layer sound and also the arpeggiator only works in the lower octave range of the keyboard, have I missed something before using these features?

      Yeah I figured out the 8 layer sound, you gotta assign sounds to the “Track Channels” there are 16 of them and I just turn off the other 8. It’s very tedious but it works. As for the arpeggiator I think that’s just the way it is.

    Hey Analog Audio, what you doin' with that digital synthesizer eh? (just kidding)
    I like the sounds, especially added with the grey matter E, my old roommate got that. I just have the plain old rack version of this Synth you're playing;Tx802. I created and still create plenty sounds. FM can be cool, but it's hard to make an actual effective white noise or any noise sound. I come close but it still sounds not as random, which is what I'm looking for. The fixed ratio sometimes does it, but not really.
    I should upload a video again, I get all antsy when I see someone post up a video of the synthesizers that I have or utilizing the FM synthesis well.

    • @AnalogAudio1
      @AnalogAudio1  7 років тому +2

      well, I also like digital synths! :-) My first real FM synth was the Yamaha TG77, which I know very well, I made many sounds on it. After that, I got the DX7, later the DX7IIFD. I also have V50, YS200 and TQ5, which are also great

    • @ish233
      @ish233 7 років тому

      AnalogAudio1 ys200 eh, it's interesting with the sequencer and how they set up the voice creation system. I haven't messed with the v50 or tq5, but I know what they are.

    • @AnalogAudio1
      @AnalogAudio1  7 років тому +1

      of course 6 OP can sound more complex than 4 OP. But the latest 4 OP synths (V50, DX11,...) have 8 different waveforms, not just sine waves like DX7. So these can achieve different sounds... I wouldn't take a FM synth for analog-like sounds.

    • @ish233
      @ish233 7 років тому

      AnalogAudio1 the tx81z also had the 8 waveform for each operator, both carrier and modulator. It definitely causes some creative expressiveness. Sine waves and manipulation, FM style engineering or just plain whacky fun.

    • @ish233
      @ish233 7 років тому

      Eman Mann that's cool, additive style is the best for that analog feel. That's normally utilized with the upper algorithms that uses all the carriers; no modulators. I still deal with FM, fun stuff, and analog audio showcases some cool styles with his and the e matter capabilities. Plenty more strange characters on UA-cam that go the distance with FM too. I'll check out your SoundCloud
