Istanbul Sultanahmet trio: Obelisk, Serpent Column, Walled Obelisk

Three monuments located in Sultanahmet Square, where a hippodrome was used for horse races during the Byzantine Period, divided the Hippodrome into two. The racers circled the hippodrome seven times and the first team to reach the starting point won the race. These three monuments, which still stand today, were lined up along the central area around which the racers circled.
Bizans Dönemi'nde at yarışlarının yapıldığı bir hipodromun bulunduğu Sultanahmet Meydanı'nda yer alan üç dikili anıt, Hipodrom'u ikiye bölermiş. Yarışçılar hipodromu yedi kez döner ve başlangıç noktasına ilk ulaşan takım yarışı kazanırmış. Bugün hala ayakta olan bu üç anıt, yarışçıların çevresinde döndüğü orta alan boyunca sıralanırmış.
Obelisk:
The most famous of the three monuments, the Obelisk was brought from Egypt in 390 and was erected in its current location in exactly 31 days. The Obelisk was built for the Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III around 1450 BC. In other words, we have one of the oldest works in Istanbul.

Üç dikili anıt arasında en ünlüsü olan Obelisk, 390 yılında Mısır'dan getirilmiş ve tam 31 günde bugünkü yerine dikilebilmiş. Obelisk, M.Ö. 1450 civarında Mısır Firavunu III. Tutmosis için yapılmış. Yani karşımızda İstanbul'daki en eski eserlerden biri duruyor.
Serpent Column
The Serpent Column decorating the square is a talisman brought from the Temple of Delphi in Apollo to protect the city from pest infestation. The heads of the three entwined snakes have been severed. The only remaining snakehead is on display at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
Yılanlı Sütun
Meydanı süsleyen Yılanlı Sütun ise kenti haşerat istilasından koruması için Apollon'daki Delphi Tapınağı'ndan getirilen bir tılsım. Birbirine dolanan üç yılanın başları kopmuş durumda. Geriye kalan tek yılanbaşı, İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzesi'nde sergileniyor.
The Walled Obelisk
The last monument in the square, the Walled Obelisk, looks extremely impressive with its 32-meter height.

Meydandaki son anıt olan Örme Dikilitaş, 32 metre yüksekliğiyle son derece etkileyici görünüyor.
