We see here a rare moment of a player's "aha" moment. Awesome that you were able to capture this. Also actually insane that waff got to plat without knowing what a frametrap is. What a legend
Man remember when SFIV had online training mode!? I wish that was still a thing. Me and my pals would just play Online Training mode and hang out and learn together on match ups and etc. Online Training mode should come back.
This is super dope you're teaching ppl and letting us hear you and the player. Best thing I've seen from a pro. I've been waiting for this. We appreciate. I'm tuning in to your content whenever it's on. Hope to get a lesson myself
I feel highlighting his strengths was an important part of the lesson you delivered, good job. When developing our game, it's easy to forget that we have strengths no matter how small and that learning something new just adds to that. Keep it up and take my sub for being such an encouraging FG educator.
See, it's videos like this that make me subscribe. Even if it's not the character I want to learn about, all it takes is some experimentation to find out what my preferred character's fastest buttons are, and what block strings can actually frame trap them. Notice me, Sensei!
I don't know if this is the best explanation of frame traps I've seen to date or if my brain just clicked, but I've been trying to figure out how to test frame traps in the lab for a while and have never really found anything that showed me. I found some good stuff to help me understand the concept but nothing on how to put it into practice.
favorite thing at low level is R Mika drop kick, people don't realize(Not sure if possible) but backing up is the best option. cause you attack you get hit since the drop kick is plus on block, and when people block they get thrown, it's so easy to catch people with in lower ranks.
Gotta stop that if you want to rank up. Any decent players will DP that all day long. You should use it a couple times then bait out the DP with short drop kicks. Then you get your full punish👍
Rian Sillett They can DP On being negative frames? Or is the just EX? I understand response which is why I rarely throw it out, but keep doing so if I see the opponent ain’t punishing it.
@@Fishofmanyhonor its a slow start up it easy to respond to. Mika's heavy dk is easy to see and react to. But on block its plus so yeah she has advantage in that situation. Good players know this and will block with delay tech. If you do come across a player that it works keep doing it until it doesn't its their fault lol
Hey appreciate the tip I suck at sv5 had the Gm for a while grew up playing it but just stop playing fighters for years now just trying to get back into playing it again
This was very informative, you earned a sub from me. I'm not good at fighting games, I'm the type to mash buttons when doing combos instead of pressing them one at a time. I just get too excited.
Hey brian is this possible to set up in sf6? I’ve always been aware of frame traps but could never figure out how to find them. Love your content and it has helped me tremendously, wishing you the best!! 😊
Missed this one yesterday Brian, very good explanation of seriously important tech :) I remember watching Daigo's frame traps with Ryu in #4 and the penny dropped for me. Do you try OS much?
Could you do a video on spacing traps? I've noticed for example that Kolins st Hp crush counters most 3 frames if you throw it out after a spaced st Mp especially in vt 2. The frames technically don't add up (6 frame gap or so) but it is reliable if you space it right. Is it just a matter of auto whiff punishing the recovery frames, but if so why does it crush counter? Is it just a matter of hit box lengths or something?
Yo Brian, i’m sending this on my burner lol but I’m a small streamer and I usually play other fighting games but I’ve been getting into SFV again after Season 1, your vids almost single handedly made me realize that the game can still be fun if you make everything a learning process and it got me playing again. I wanted to see if you’d be down to play a set and humble me a bit.
So question buddy if you have an answer. I went to training mode and set Balrog to reply with a light kick. I’ve noticed sometimes if spaced, the light attack gets counter by a command grab, is that just weird frames or is it an actually thing that will work if someone tries to respond stupidly after a light punch with Mika.
That's where frame data doesn't tell the whole picture. It's frame data + spacing that you need to calculate in your head! So if spaced, even if the light kick (lk) would be faster than your command grab, if you're too far for it too hit, the lk will just whiff. If you space it right, you can be at a spacing where your slower command grab will reach, but fast buttons will whiff. This is why fighting games are not just about frame data/numbers, gotta know your spacing too!
He's platinum because his neutral and "game sense" are that good. Everyone making comments like this would probably get washed by HMW in a match. How about we recognize what our own strengths and weakness are and learn from there? At lower ranks (below diamond) most players have large gaps in understanding of the game. What you excel at might be someone else's weakness and vice versa. No point in comparing each other like this when everyone at this level just needs to improve
@@Brian_F i didn't mean in a bad way, I was genuinely surprised. I am sure his neutral are better than mine since I am one league below but I know about frame traps (and I thought it was nearly impossible to get to plat without knowing any frame traps), I do have several other thing s lacking though! 😂
Just to complete. I was following celoows Sakura tutorial to rank up and even him that preaches for a simple game plan that is build upon gradually layer by layer introduces frametraps when you reach gold. This dude most by god like to win without knowing anything about it. Didnt he really really know anything about it? Sorry again if it came out as a negative comment, it was not my intention
I think you missed the point of the video... what I showed here is not character specific. Do the same process with any character and you'll figure out frame traps
@@Brian_F so I've tried and I cant seem to find the trap or make the trap with Nash.i did follow your tip and I got some where with boxer but I d t like boxer I like nash any tips for Nash?
Is there any specific way to know if a move will frame trap or is it through experimenting? Edit: I assume looking at the frame data would let you know but what exactly would you look for frame data wise to know?
Correct, frame data will tell you exactly what will frame trap (given that the ranges all work out, frame data doesn't tell you about how much range moves have and how far they pushback) I was just trying to give an example to hmw without using frame data since he's a more "feel" kind of player
Assuming you want to beat out a 3f jab, you want your bait move to have frame advantage of (startup of your counterhit move, minus 1-3f). So if your CH move is 5f, you want the bait to be +2 to +4 on block. In the case of +2 above, the CH move would have to have higher priority as it'd hit on the same frame as their reversal 3f, but that's generally the case anyway. Rog's trap at the start of the video is an example of this, as the cr.jab is +3 and the mk is 6f. I'm no expert so I couldn't say what's best in practice though.
If you do it to someone's wakeup then it's called a meaty attack, but yes. If you have enough plus frames you can press a button that can counterhit someone before their throw is active. You can also do a meaty throw, which will beat waking up with buttons (again, if you're plus enough) or blocking.
It doesn’t surprise me that a Rog player can get to Platinum without knowing their character’s frame trap for 3 framers. At all. Good for him, though, and kudos to Brian for teaching him. Not easy to find a good teacher.
No you dont need to know any frame data even to masters. You just need to know what works and what does not. Know how long to block and when its your turn. If you are in gold, plat league etc dont worry about all that technical stuff just learn your matchups. Try relaxing in a match more. Slow down and train for getting your best punishes out. To many low ranks worry about tiers and frame data. Learn the game properly first
Its not that mad. I know players that dont stop talking about tier lists, meta's and frame traps. They talk all the lingo but are stuck in gold league! it cracks me up🤦♂️
“PLATINUMS HATE THIS! One weird trick that ranks up your Balrog into Diamond.”

Also actually insane that waff got to plat without knowing what a frametrap is. What a legend
I mean... people get to Gold with Sagat and Guile just spaming Fireballs and Dps, without knowing blockstrings or actual combos.
I'm gold just from a reasonable understanding of neutral I learned from other 2D fighters, I can barely input shoryu never mind combos lol
Man remember when SFIV had online training mode!? I wish that was still a thing. Me and my pals would just play Online Training mode and hang out and learn together on match ups and etc. Online Training mode should come back.
It should be the standard for all future street fighter games, minus a few features of course.
Online Training mode was such an underrated mode. Not nearly enough people used that
I wish all videos could be this helpful and straight to the point. This can be applied to any character for training.

I finally understand what is meant by a frame trap. Thank you!
The smash ultimate training room music was a nice touch
Especially because Smash doesn't have 90% of these training features.
This fighting game crossover teaching is somehow very wholesome content
I gotta say if I were ever to pay ONE coach to teach me SFV, it would be you. Finally learned frame traps thanks to your video! 😁👍
