@vishalkalicharan7710 There are 36 episodes total in Season 5. Next year (2024), they are going to carry over it an extra day since there are 32 episodes left to review and 31 days in October.
Many years ago, my father bravely and selflessly laid down on an operating table and allowed doctors to remove a part of him so that I could live (kidney transplant). So this episode is extra special to me. I lost him a couple years ago and I miss him terribly. Love you, dad! ❤
@@atomdecay thank you. Yes, he never hesitated. As a matter of fact, i didn’t include it in the original post but mom told me after the transplant that he was having nightmares before the date of the procedure - the nightmares were not that something went wrong with him or he was going to suffer, but rather that they had determined that they wouldn’t let him be a donor! And, now like you, I understand as I am the father of a beautiful young woman that I love with all my heart.
We're onto Season 5 already, which means that October 2024 will likely mark the end of Walter reviewing the classic series. I hope that he eventually tackles other iterations of the show from the 80's, 00's and New 10's.
One of the surprisingly rare episodes that starts with the classic "Submitted for your approval" line from Serling. He actually only used this in a few episodes, but the line is very much associated with Serling. And yes, "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" fans, that line was deliberately put into that series as a "Twilight Zone" homage. Makes sense as "AYAOTD" was designed as "Twilight Zone" for kids, so naturally have the Midnight Society, the show's Serling equivalents, say that famous line every episode.
Despite Max being a con man and a flawed father, his redeeming qualities are his love for his son. He sacrifices his own life to save Pip, who lives on to have happy memories of his dad.
The sentimentality of this episode comes off in more ways than one. This was the last episode of both Jack Klugman and Billy Mumy, two twilight zone juggernauts, so it feels like a bittersweet send-off of both actors.
I suppose after he's done reviewing all the episodes from the original series he could move on to reviewing episodes from the 1980s TWILIGHT ZONE series.
@@peterkrug4124 He could switch to Outer Limits. I watched some episodes years ago when you tube was not that strict in showing copyrighted content. More focus on sci fi.
My opinion, Klugman's best performance of the series. He had a lot of heavy handed material to work through and managed to make me tear up at the end. He was just that good. The man could act. Second, please continue with something if you can. Twilight Tober and Bat May were stables for me. I literally would could the days when we got closer to those dates. Crossing fingers. Suggestions -> finish Batman animated by covering the movies (if you can). Maybe do the original Outer Limits. I never liked the Twilight Zone sequels. They had some good episodes but overall it didn't work for me personally.
Jack Klugman and Bill Mummy became so close during the shooting of this episode that they remained close friends up until Klugman's death in 2012. In fact, it was Mummy who delivered a eulogy at Klugman's funeral, which was supposedly Klugman's explicit wish.
This is one of the episodes (along with changing of the guard) that my father told me not to watch because they were too sad. I watched them anyway and, of course, like any of the ones Jack Klugman does, it's one of my favorites.
Night and day difference. While the last episode was easily one of the worst to ever come out of Twilight Zone this one while not the greatest is still a real solid and fantastic episode. Jack Klugman, returning to once again, give his best as he always does delivers a great performance, especially when he’s bonding with his son. That time there was so believable them running from one ride to another having a joy you could tell he loved every second with his son. And of course, the heartbreak in the house of mirrors. Wishing for more time and giving himself up so his son can go on living. And when his son gave the response at the end of the episode, I honestly believe that he could hear his dad’s asking him a question. I don’t know if this would be cheesy, but maybe it would’ve been better if you could’ve seen Jack standing behind a son actually asking him. And then Pip smiling responding then having a question look on his face turns around to see no one there, with a smile on his face, knowing his dad is watching over him.
Even though Max did a lot of shady things in his life, I'm touched that he got a chance to be with his son. I thought it was noble of him to beg God to take him in order for Pip to survive. And it was sweet that it left Pip with happy memories of his dad!
The main character, Max a con man and bad dad, the episode give a good job of humanizing him. A flawed man, but not a bad guy and in the end he trade his life for his son life, so his son can live a long life and possibly be a much better father than he was, an act of unmeasurable sacrifice
Well, I almost managed to watch the full episode - and then the TV screwed up at the halfway mark. Damnit, "In Praise of Pip" was getting interesting. I liked the dilemma the father was going through and the little time he had.
Arrived here we are at season five, oh I can’t wait for Walter to cover episodes like “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”, “Number 12 looks Just Like You”, “The Queen of the Nile”, “Living Doll”, “The Old Man in the Cave” and “Black Leather Jackets”
All I can think of is the movie "the Halloween Tree" when I watch this. The main character in the movie was called pip and it pretty much follows the same kind of thing that he was dying. And that is when friends were coming to try and save him/help him.
Steel is up next. That should be an interesting one talk about. After that we it’ll likely be a 15 minute discussion on nightmare at 20,000 feet. And will end with a kind of Stop Watch. Probably the best closure we’ve had to the twilight tbh.
While many like A Passage for Trumpet and It's A Good Life, I think this episode was my favorite of Klugman's and Mumy's. You see so much of of their relationship in their interactions together.
It’s appropriate that Season 5 starts off with an episode where the main character’s son was wounded in Vietnam. Seasons 1-4 pretty much reflected the early 60’s. The first episode of Season 5 questioning the US involvement in Vietnam marked the start of what would forever define the 1960’s. It’s as if the Twilight Zone throughout it’s run was telling audiences “Brace yourself: there’s change coming!!”
This episode was on MeTV , today, 4-8-24. In the book, The Twilight Zone Companion, by Marc Scott Zicree this episode was rewritten by Rod Serling because the US Defense Department didn’t like the script. Rod Serling originally had Pip wounded in Laos. The government said no US troops were fighting in Laos, and the US government urged Serling to have Pip wounded in South Vietnam.( the US was fighting a secret war In Laos, 1961-1975 against the Pathet Lao) The US had military advisers aiding the South Vietnamese army. Rod Serling rewrote his script and he was very prescient. We were fighting in Laos, and South Vietnam and US soldiers were being killed in a “dirty war”. Anyway, this is a very emotional episode and is up there in the best episodes of the TZ. A father willing to sacrifice himself for his son always chokes me up. My son almost died around 2010, and I prayed for him and he got better, believe it or not.
I’d love to see this episode in full. Just a clip of him pleading to God to take himself instead of his boy made me tear up… I’m getting soft in my age.
He was shot and was gonna die anyway so I don't see how this was a trade. "God take my life instead of my son's even tho I'm about to die in a few minutes anyway." ?
I got to say this was a good one though I don't like feels when it comes to terror I will say twilight zone always did the best with both horror and feels
Jack Klugman and Bill Mummy appear together in this episode. 30 years later in 1996, Klugman appeared in movie Dear God, which also featured Mumy's son Seth.
The 80s Zone redid the 'A Game of Pool' episode and stuck with the original ending, the legend beating the upstart and the upstart living but now damned to stay even obsessed with pool to prove himself, and the whole time I was thinking, man. Wouldn't it have been AMAZING if they got Klugman back. Would explain him sparing the annoying kid.
It's probably a long shot, but I would be interested in seeing channel awesome review Rod Sterling other series "The Night Gallery" or maybe "Tales from the Darkside"......
This one was really sad, the season 5 premiere was so much better than season5/series finale. The series finale was probably not only the worst of the TZ episodes, but one of the worst series finales of all time and I can’t believe this is the same director.
More than likely, he'll just have to have either an extra day of it this year or next year, because that would be kinda' dumb to have us wait an entire year for just ONE extra episode. XD
America technically started intervening since the war began but mainly financed South Vietnam's government and supplied its military with weapons, trainers and consultants. But it wasn't until the Kennedy years when actual troops were deployed.
