When describing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, I referred to it as a "2D" game. What I should have said was "side-scrolling." Have a nice day.

I consider it a 2D game because you only interact with 2 dimensions. It's not about the graphics, it's about the game mechanics. Whether it has 3D models or 2D sprites, doesn't make a difference in how the game plays.

I appreciate the way you guys are. Sometimes I get a little bit sad because I can't play games like I used to, because of my professional job and wanting to be with my daughter. Seeing you guys with a life similar to mine, still being happy about wanting to play games, even though you guys really don't know when, make me appreciate everything. There's no time limit to play a game and I feel is the best way. 🙏🏾

Just wanted to hop in here and recommend Nine Sols. I just got the platinum trophy last night and it was probably my favorite experience of the year. If you’re a metroidvania and Sekiro fan, you’ll probably love it.
I also really enjoyed Wukong, Stellar Blade, Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord, Astrobot, Echoes of Wisdom, and I finally played The Last of Us 2, this year.
The only ones I have FOMO from not playing that I need to jump into this coming year are Alan Wake 2, Prince of Persia, and Metaphor. I started Metaphor today, though, so I’m about to remedy that one.
Thanks for another year of awesome content, Mike and Casen! Happy New Year, everyone!

I IMPLORE the two of you to put the game Mouthwashing in your priority list. It is a shorter indie title, it can be comfortably finished within 2 to 3 hours, it is a narratively rich title that is positively bursting with symbolism and just begging to be analyzed on a deeper level. It is absolutely up your alley and I think it would make for a fantastic one off episode of the podcast.

For those wondering about Rebirth, I do think the guys will give the whole series a fair shake when part 3 comes out. Mike said they'll do a retrospective of the original game when it comes out. They gave XVI a shot. I think as a Final Fantasy fan it's important to at least look at those games.

    • @Shiftarus

I hope so... even if they end up disliking much of the game there is TONS to appreciate about the quality in the music, sounds, animation, and cinematography; I personally would love to hear them break it down.

    • @Paul-to1nb
      @Paul-to1nb 15 днів тому +2

I felt similarly to Mike about Remake and especially FFXVI, but I love Rebirth. It's so ambitious, fun, and charming. I never thought Square would be able to pull it the feeling of leaving Midgar and entering this vast world but they did. The Rebirth team deserves a chance to make their own mainline game and I can't wait for them to have that opportunity.
The caveat is: the story is soso. IMO its bad parts aren't as bad as Remake's (possibly because I already expected changes), but it also has less highs than Remake (mostly because it's Act 2 of FF7 and there's just less room for that). I'm nervous if they'll be able to stick the landing in part 3, but more hopeful than after Remake. If they handle the plot twist the way I hope, it'd elevate it above the OG. But there's countless more ways they could mess it up. That is really going to make or break the entire trilogy.
Oh and if you're tired of Ubisoft open worlds... Rebirth's open-world zones won't do it for you. I loved it (I skipped the first few zones, but then fell in love with the last ones. I hear most people burn out early), but you can easily skip this content if you don't like it. The mainline story has enough on its own and the open-world stuff doesn't have any story aside from the protorelic missions (of which only the Cosmo Canyon one is worth doing for story). A few of the green quests have some small story gems and much quicker to do than all the open-world checklist. In interviews they said Part 3 will have more organic exploration, less Ubisoft checklists, so that's great!
All that said, I love it and hope more people give it a shot. The devs deserve kudos. It's the most ambitious game Square has made since the PS1. It's considerably longer than Remake (took me 80-90 hours first playthrough). I worry people waiting for Part 3 will burn out doing all of them at once.

Pathologic 3 is an indie game coming out on 2025, that series tackles a lot of themes you normally don't see in video games. It's also probably going to be a good starting point for newcomers for various story related reasons (each character tackles a different facet of the same story)
Although I highly recommend it I think you guys probably won't like it, it does filter a lot of people from several angles so it ends up being a niche series much to the chagrin of the devs

  • @PalmelaHanderson
    @PalmelaHanderson 18 днів тому +2

I appreciate the whole tangent about how the Prince of Persia team was disbanded. The unfortunate reality we are in now is that most video game publishers are publiclly traded companies. In publicly traded companies, it's not enough that a game sold a lot of copies and made a bunch of money - what matters is if it made MORE than the last game. If you're not growing, you're dying. Profitability doesn't matter in and of itself, it's growth that matters. If you're not growing in profits and/or market share, then people have no reason to invest. Sustainability isn't an option. Kind of messed up when you think about it long enough.

Unicorn Overlord is indeed incredible. I would also recommend the Romancing Saga 2 remake. The leveling system in that game is basically Final Fantasy 2’s if it wasn’t a broken mess. Turns out it’s actually a cool system when it’s implemented properly.

I love everything about it except that’s it’s Grindy and you don’t see the characters attack. But the game isn’t made for me, I think it’s mostly made for those who loved the original and like the grind and want it to remain faithful to the original. I still wish there were options to reduce the frequency of random attacks.
Here is Japan where I live, a friend of the family who played and loved it as child bought it and introduced it to his son.

I’m with you on the remake problem but man. Horror classic remakes have really been the highlight of my year for the last two years. RE2-4, Dead Space, and SH2 were all so good. Thing is the original hardware for early horror games presents a limitation. One I still appreciate btw. But it’s nice to get the vision of what those games could look like with modern tech. For an original tho, I loved Crow Country this year.

Metaphor is great for old-school JRPG heads who never really dove into the modern Persona 3-4-5 trilogy. It's like an older Final Fantasy game in a high fantasy setting, with Atlus's unique mechanics and systems.

I would highly recommend playing the Suikoden originals as opposed to the remasters -- they are very grounded works of geopolitical fiction, taking place in humble lands emulating historical Celtic, French, and Chinese locations, but the remasters gaudily slather the screen with inappropriate effects meant to cheaply impart the impression of 'good graphics', and destroy the tone as a result. One pivotal scene toward the beginning of Suikoden II meant to emphasize the bond of friendship amid a cold, dark, terrifying situation, is completely ruined by the remaster splattering so many shiny special effects all over the screen that it looks like a Disney romance scene instead. It may seem like you'd still get the important part, the amazing writing, but these things do matter and affect how you feel at least on a subconscious level

I’m a huge Suikoden fan and completely agree with Mike about Suikoden 1, which I also prefer over Suikoden 2-even though I love both games to death. Over the years, I’ve noticed that more people played Suikoden 2 and skipped the first one, which is why it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. With the upcoming remaster, I’m sure many more fans will experience both and appreciate the broader story found in Suikoden 1 and 2.
Another game I’m looking forward to in 2025 is DoubleShake, an indie title inspired by the Tomba series. It was originally scheduled for release in 2024 but hasn’t come out yet, so I’m hoping we’ll see it this year.

I honestly adored Metaphor. It was my favorite game this year and has easily become one of my favorite games of all time. As someone with a lot of anxiety, the way it uses the themes to express the metaphor (pun intended) of how fear and anxiety impact people and society is masterful. I have never felt those kind of feelings I've in real life represented so well in a game until now. The way the characters, themes, gameplay, plot, political background, world building ties together sooooo well. I will be thinking about it for year to come. I wouldn't say its as good as the Xenoblade Chronicles games, though thats a whole trilogy, its still up there for me. It really brings you into the era and teaches you about the age while bringing back the real freedom of choice in how we can approach missions without telling us (like in KCD 1 there was around 3 - 5 different ways to get out of a castle at the start and the whole Monastery quest was great). My recent playthrough on Hardcore mode of KCD 1 just made it even better, opening up my map and looking around for landmarks to get my bearings to find my way is just great. The fact that they also retained all their devs from KCD 1 is a great sign as well.also it might just be me but I love that the in game codex is written from a historical POV and while not needed it greatly enhances of the period.
I remember in the news that some Czech Republic universities was using a modified version of it to allow the students to look around the castles which is great to see that shows the great point of trying to create an immerserive and as close as possible deception of the time

KCD is so underrated. The combat can be a bit clunky, but the immersion as a RPG is unmatched. The game even have a mechanic to have Henry learn how to read. It's great.

@@LimpingAuRa- Yeah, I totally agree. Although I won't be buying KCD 2 on release based on how the first one released (you should never buy games on release anyway), if they can just fix the combat to make it flow better and get rid of the clunky like nature but keep the vision of the combat, it will be easily probably one of my favourite games of the year and that I've ever played (you have to try really hard to top Tactics Ogre for me). As a history-obsessive person and a gamer, the game is basically a match made in heaven for me.

I am stoked for the dragon quest 1&2 remakes coming out! I’m currently in the midst of dq 3 and let me tell you, it is one of my top 5 games now that I’ve played it. I played dq 1 earlier this year on iOS and also got myself a copy of dragon warrior for nes to compare. It’s going to be amazing to see how the remake compares, and I’ll be honest that the remake of 2 is the only chance I have of playing it: more streamlined, more beautiful than ever, and just a great end to the trilogy. Great picks, dudes! Happy new year!

Blade Chimera for Switch and PC - side scrolling action game.
Lost Soul Aside - single-player Action RPG originally developed by 1 person from China (I think?). Sony is providing development assistance via their Hong Kong Project. Main Character looks a lot like a stereotypical Final Fantasy character (kinda like Noctis from FFXIV, but more his style from FF Vs XIII than his final FFXV design).
Both games I mentioned are upcoming releases. Blade Chimera comes out January 16th and Lost Soul Aside is just tabbed as a "2025 Release" (no definitive release date yet).

I hope they remake the rest of the 2D Dragon Quests, specially V, it's the first one made for the Super Famicom, it have one of the most mature narratives I have ever seen in a game, dealing with heavy themes as slavery, death of parents and such - it was remade to PS2 and Nintendo DS (like IV and VI, VII and VIII); the battle mechanics are also great, you can recruit monsters to your party, it is considered a direct inspiration for the mechanics of Pokémon since it first came out on 1992. Happy New Year, you guys are beasts!

Hi guys, before watching the video, I can't recommend enough Signalis, it's a survival horror in the style of PS1 games like classic RE and Silent Hill, but the story, setting, characters, lore, interpretations and symbolism screams "RESONANT ARC!!!, THEY WOULD HAVE A BLAST WITH THIS THING!!!!". Go in blind... maybe during the playthrough you'll have to research about a book and some paintings... I shouldn't even say "when you think it ended and throws you back to the title screen, it didn't", kinda like one of the Nier games...and I better shut up about Signalis... it's amazing. Quite an experience.
I'll probably leave more comments, but this one is only about Signalis.

I have to echo a few others on this comment section and really encourage Metaphor as a topic on this show. It creates a fresh take on the fantasy genre with a good world full of subtle storytelling. The social links/followers also have some major storytelling standouts as well, and the antagonist is one of the best Atlus has created for this type of game (those in the Persona mold). I understand maybe not covering a Persona game for this channel, but Metaphor moves at a fairly brisk pace and is worth a play.
