The piano work of Otis Spann, especially on the 2nd song, is a joy to behold, as of course is JLH. Otis died way way to early, he was always my no.1 blues piano player, still is. Tks for the posting...
Yes in this video YES at 5:47 to 6:36 look at MUDDY WATERS dancing to His Band backing up JOHN LEE HOOKER - A great moment - A great feeling - A great thing to watch and hear ! OK did you see it ? Have another look 5:47 to 6:36
Una de las mejores performances de hooker, desenvolviendosé es el género jazz, y con la orquesta ( o banda) de mudys waters, se ganó el público y los aplausos merecidos
For me, The Iconic Blues Mam. I was 5 or 6 when I went on a trip from Oakland to Pamona Ca. This was one of the songs my moms ol'man played. Been a fan eva since.
Two of the truest blues men that created this sound though the years playing around. I always wondered if he got together with Muddy or Wolf, would any footage be there,,,, It wasn't much of a rock n roll life style for them, it was what it is. Quote of the day; "Such deep blues." Down low...
First thing I noticed (apart from JLH of course) was Otis Spann bottom left corner, and on both tracks he excels, he was like instinctive with his accompaniment, just so natural and so spine chillingly soulful. When he died I swear a bit of myself died as well. While cannot really hear JLH's guitar this vid is a real treasure of a time when I was young but hell, the music still rocks. @zeppelinek92 - Yes agree.
Johnny lee had a great voice and helped us to see the blues from another perspective do you agree with me? or up to a point anyway thanks johnny lee. ......
That's Pate Hare on guitar. A rock solid, in demand sideman who played with most of the Memphis and Chicago greats in addition to a series of classic releases under his own name. The rest of the Waters band at the festival was Muddy Waters, voc, g; James Cotton, hca, Otis Spann, p; Pat Hare ["Tat Harris" on back cover], g; Andrew Stephens ["Andrew Stevenson" on back cover], b; Francis Clay, dr; [] and guest artists Butch Cage, violin; [] Lafayette Thomas, guitar.
Great Classic rare footage of a young Johnny Lee Hooker, with Muddy Waters band, towards the end the camera pans to Muddy Waters off stage Dancing and Juking...LOL
Otis killing it on piano. The guy dancing is part of a duo that were on the bill, can't remember their professional name. They did jive dancin' . Check out the Newport movie.
@ MrBUBBABENNY: Agreed Ms. Raitt does as good Chi-Town/Delta Blues as any Caucasian Country Crossover could hope. But Hooker, Waters, Johnson, King, Guy, and Charles' music has immortalized itself. Elvis Presley, Elvin Bishop, Clapton, Plant, Morrison and Jagger would concur, IMHO. Great memories for you, tho.

Es el pianista de mudys waters, no esperes menos, no esperes que no acompañe al zorro a la perfección
I'm waiting for musicians like this to appear... goodness knows we have things worthy of heart felt tunes.

+Elston Gunn ... if you consider 43 years old to be "young," mister, then my hat if off to you.
You should have seen him around 1948 when he recorded the original "Boogie Chillen".
yeah Francisco,
priceless footage.

Check out Live At The Café Au Go Go!
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
c'est du lourd ! John Lee yeeeehh !

what a great post! it's weird how they sometimes do 11 bars, then 12,then 10 bars, it sort of makes it more rawer to me.

Dancin that boogie!
insanely good !!!

Spann, Cotton etc.? Who else? There were no etc's in a Muddy Waters band.
Thank you!!
@mizterblack but Clapton, Peter Green, John Mayall (and more) are still incredible, blues-rock is damn good thing
Isso e muito bommmm

Interesting pickup installation on the Harmony...

um .. yes he does, tho not always .. sometimes 8 bar too .. and he adds a few measures here and there like most old bluesmen
finfina grejor,killen utanför diggar verkligen.
didn't know that Andy, whats the album called?
I guess *Otis Spann* is not the one on piano, he's the one who's dancing!
No way man ! That's definitely Otis Spann playing piano. No one else plays like THAT !!!
He did an album with this band!
I got it . Really shitty, no groove like this film.
Sir Joe Weed, a perfect name for a shoeshine boy.
Did he go on before or after Muddy? All the women in the audience are way more into JLH's set.
STUD
@sleeplessintokyo
I love how John Lee doesn't follow the 12 bar format
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's got that pick up hanging in a weird spot on his guitar it should be up close to the neck not behind the bridge.
Johnny lee h
so much better than white blues like Eric Clapton or ZZ TOP
He borrowed B.B's suit.
Great!
