The dear shaykh did not make any cogent argument as to why tasawwuf (as a science of Islam) is an innovation. Merely, he pointed to certain wrong practices of people who claim to follow it, and the extrapolated that the whole science is wrong. Do we say that the science of Hadith is wrong merely because there were those practitioners who fabricated hadiths? Do we say that the science of tafsir is not legitimate simply because of those who approached it in an incorrect way? The basic rule of fiqh is that whatever is haram has been clearly mentioned, the rest is halal. Wallahu alam. Imagine the money invested by sufis on grave decorations, stones, amulets etc, instead of doing that , they could collect all that money, which is in millions,, and sponsor some orphan or donate in charity.
The claim of the true scholars of tasawwuf is that grave worship is entirely outside the fold of Islam.
True tasawwuf is entirely based on Quran and Sunnah as understood by the 4 schools of thought. Anything outside of this should be rejected. Including grave worship.
Amulets, stones, worshiping dead is all haram. Don’t mix truth with falsehood and vice versa. Sufis aren’t a sect hence they fall in Sunni and Shia ones. The Sunni ones would be similar to your teachers hajar and nawawi. Be careful of what you say to your brothers.

Yes our Prophet (ﷺ) asked these questions to identify a believer: Prophet Muhammad Once said to a maid: Where is ALLAH? She said: ALLAH is in heaven. Prophet said: Who am I?
