Brittany, I'm a British born Chinese with Cantonese speaking parents and I just found your channel - my "can understand, cannot speak" problem is pretty significant. I'm so motivated to improve my Cantonese because of you!
When I was younger, I was really into cantopop and I found that learning to sing the songs can be done without knowing the actual characters. After learning the song, then it's really easy to look at the lyrics and learn a ton of Chinese characters at the same time. Of course, even cantopop lyrics are usually in standard Mandarin instead of vernacular spoken Cantonese, but it's still useful. Another place I learned a lot is from Chinese menus since I already knew the Chinese names of the dishes so reading those helped me pick up those characters.
Just discovered your channel. Such a gold mine, your method of teaching Cantonese as a "jook-sing", invaluable. Will be visiting to improve my skills. Please keep it up!
This is amazing in general! I’m working on improving my Cantonese. I’ve noticed that if I just try a little every day it is better than not trying. Can you do a video on the cantonese movies on prime and Netflix etc? And cantonese dubbed anime sounds interesting, can you talk more about that too?
That's awesome! If you're new to the channel, you might find this blog I wrote helpful: www.cantonesewithbrittany.com/blog/how-to-use-my-channel-to-improve-your-cantonese Good luck and !!!!
I love these tips!!! They're so great!!! I also like to think in Cantonese. For instance, I might wake up in the morning and feel really tired, so instead of thinking to myself, "I'm so tired," I will think, "Ngo hou goi." Given that people on average have hundreds to thousands of thoughts a day, this can add up pretty quickly haha
Thanks for the tips! Hearing Cantonese more definitely helps with tones and picking up vocabulary. I believe my Cantonese was at its best when I briefly lived in NYC's Chinatown. Great vid!
Greetings from Australia. I'm a second generation Australian of Chinese descent. I love your videos, giving me great inspiration to learn Cantonese Thank you!
Really cool how you use Jyutping to type and learn new vocab I was a bit hesitant on learning it at first because none of my HK friends or mainland Cantonese friends type in Canto that way. They use Quick or PinYin. But it was the best decision I ever made as a heritage speaker
Hi Brittany, I'm a British Born Chinese and just found your channel! I've been wanting to improve my Cantonese for a while now and these tips sound really helpful to get me motivated to learn!
Thanks for your channel. Been interested in leraning Canto since I started getting interested in Chinese culture. However, the absence of leraning resources made it almost impossible to learn. Your initiative to teaching Cantonese is a gift to all of us.
Very grateful that I found your channel I’m starting to learn Cantonese so I can closer connected to my grandmother but I’m kinda scared that I won’t be able to learn fast enough in order to communicate with her I’ll be waiting for more videos from you and maybe some tips to learn cause I’m lost from learning vocabulary and watching but I try and speak as much as I can just I’m rarely around people who speak Cantonese sadly
Thank you for your great efforts to make chinese subtitle with Pingyam. I am watching your videos with my mobile phone and I noticed that chinese character subtitle became smaller than before.. It would be great if Chinese characters are a bit bigger! Thank you
I love this channel Brittany! I'd love to know if you have more information on learning how to write and read with traditional Chinese characters (books, channels, apps?)
And in case you didn’t know, I have three sets of worksheets for learning to write Cantonese on my Patreon. Each pack has 25 traditional characters drawn stroke by stroke with example sentences.
Best way to improve imo is talking a lot and listening to people talking about common things. If you can talk to a patient person to help you improve it is better still.
Watching and listening are nice, but it's a pain when you can't understand a word and you have to constantly look it up on Pleco. What helps is to watch something with English subtitles. Then you won't have to look it up.
Great tips. I learned most of my Cantonese through watching HK movies. I would watch the movie or play the DVD in the background as I did other things to listen and improve my vocabulary. Ironically, my improved conversational Cantonese landed me a job at a US based HK movie distributor 20 years ago. I learned a bit of Taishanese from watching Karl Maka :P.
Hey Brittany, what's your workflow in creating Cantonese subtitles/documents? So far, I end up having to open up chrome and use the Google Input tools extension with the Cantonese package... Then import those into whatever non-chrome software/documents. This takes a lot of time, so I was wondering if you found a workaround to natively install Cantonese to your pc 🤔
If you really want to learn Cantonese you need to be in that environment. Like live in Hong Kong, there is no way you cannot use as in communicate Cantonese in Hong Kong.
i know mandarin so i can basically understand all the subtitles (after learning a few of the characters only cantonese uses) but don't really know how to improve my speach D:

That's such a good idea! Taking the 2 hours a day principle and applying it to another aspect of your life! That's so clever :)
I’m getting by ABC (Australian Born Chinese) daughter on this channel - great job Brittany
Can you, please, film a video about Cantonese seafood vocabulary?
Great tips thanks very much

A FOB from Toronto
LOL I love that you said 唔使寫得好深情
😅😂It’s true though!
🔥🔥 Amazing tips :)
This is amazing Brittany. Which program do you use to create your subtitles? Is it through iMovie?
Adobe Premiere!
Best way to improve imo is talking a lot and listening to people talking about common things. If you can talk to a patient person to help you improve it is better still.
加油! 欣賞你地學習一個咁難學嘅語言 gah yau~~
得閒可以搵我傾計:)
I'm mad that Aggrestsuko is not available in Cantonese in Canada ;_;
Watching and listening are nice, but it's a pain when you can't understand a word and you have to constantly look it up on Pleco. What helps is to watch something with English subtitles. Then you won't have to look it up.
i always feel like cantonese is the hardest chinese language you can learn, theres even some words that you wont find in mandarin.
Great tips. I learned most of my Cantonese through watching HK movies. I would watch the movie or play the DVD in the background as I did other things to listen and improve my vocabulary. Best way to practice Cantonese a lot is to marry someone who also speaks Cantonese, but hopefully better than yourself!
This one made me laugh 😂 great tip!

Do u have Wechat ?🙂
