It didn't help when they demolished the civic centre that staged events bringing the community together. Also demolishing the famous California Ballroom was another bad move.
Made in 1965 and they are still trying to fix the issues of traffic in the town centre. The traffic has been worse since the day they took away the central double roundabouts and put up traffic lights.
visited this town in mid to late 90's when they hosted the Tattoo Conventions , what a lovely town , have promised myself i'll return someday .Stayed at Kitts Inn, met some great people there.
The only thing they got was the shopping centre from the 1965 plans then. Also working there in the 70's it was dead as all the shoppers went to Luton Arndale when it opened.
I used to live in Dunstable in the 2010's. I truly hated it there. Im still shocked they demolished Ashton Middle School and built a living estate there
I lived there 2009 - 2018, I remember hearing they were gonna do something with that school. Apparently the old Co-Op in Houghton Regis finally finished demolition and has some sort of home there as well
and in 2019 how much of this Utopian town centre has Dunstable had built? How many of the wonderful "motorway style bypasses have been built? errr.... NONE! lol
There never was "before". The first inhabitants of the UK were of Celtic origin. Then Romans came, Normans and Wikings, Hispanic, and so on... up to the British colonialism and the opening the country to other nationalities. So, before you offend anyone again check your genes to know who you are ;)
I remember visiting the beautiful civic centre with its unusual intricate ceiling. I believe it was demolished to make way for a supermarket. Also there was an unusually shaped pub called the Windsock or suchlike. There were a couple of brilliant nightclubs one of which was the famous California Ballroom. It used to be a thriving upmarket town before the council and government got their hands on it. Now a dreary dump. The crossroads was a burial place for witches apparently.
Wonderful to see my home town. What a difference seeing prams left outside shops in the days when you could.
The "problematic" town centre of the early '60s seems very vibrant compared with the ghost town it is now.
So many (open) shops, real thriving town centre. It's tragic to see how run down and empty it has become.

Bring back the, “The Double Bubble”. It worked!
@@janskeet1382 Heh I can remember all the complaints when it was first installed!
Fascinating to see what parts of the development plans were implemented and what definitely was not! (For better or worse)
