Hi Ian, 5:20 Only an idea (not saying its a good one), but you could use one of your feed rails that have the wood in the bottom, to double up as a gate... Feed rail and gate. All the best, Chris.
Ian, I'm so happy for you with this new build. Anyone that watches your videos can tell you have a love for your farm and the cattle. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all comes together. ~Dave~
Went to the APF a fantastic show. Nice to meet a few people we deal with. I did leave my credit card at home. Nice chat with the guys at fuel wood stand. So many things I'd like but made do with a burger. Enjoyable video. Regards to the family
Good video, it’s always a bugger trying to plan the layout. Just a thought what about putting your gate on the gable end, then you can have 2 feed barriers under the apron
id put the gate on the corner by the barn Ian. This way would give you access to the corner feed barrier with the SS to push feed up without having to shift cattle if you've got the yard all open... Would give you a l shaped feeding area that way with access to all of it...
Ian get a blank piece of paper draw the shed from a birds eye view, then draw out what you want including the fences and gates to the field next to the shed. If your gonna do this do it with advice from the ladies in your life. That way I honestly believe you will get the best shed you can.
Hi Farmer P, why don't you get some of those concrete feeding troughs like Jo Seels has got, to feed his cows, that would save you having to have those concrete panels and have the cows food closier to them...
You looking after your animals be like the ritzy. One of your tree 🌳 team mentioned a unimog in a video many months ago, I hope not 😂😂 day out no gaffer, credit cards 😂😂Top-team
Ian, If you put the concrete panel on the inside face of the upright and the steel feed barrier on the outside face surely you make the cattle reach further. Why not tie a feed barrier and place a piece of timber the width of the concrete in and try it out first. I think your just making a gap the distance of the upright or most of it that will stop the animals feeding as much.
The reason we are having the concrete barriers is to allow for the higher outside levels. The ground level will be deliberately 12" higher outside to compensate for short legs. 🙂👍
@@FarmerP But by having the stagger with the concrete wall and the feed barrier, your loosing neck length and so reach to the feed. Which means more pushing hay up in reach.
I keep thinking about making that daily drop off of feed as quick, simple and effective as possible. Could feed in from the eastside and muck out to the west. What about pushing the muck westwards and then to the south corner, and having a route up to the heap outside of the extension by the shipping containers? It might mean opening up the whole western paddock by the water tanks, but that might be alright in the long run too.
@@philc2457 The covered yards are just another phase in the farm development Phil, next years phase was discussed with Tim as well, We will need a few more tonnes of steel. All will become clear 🙂👍🏼
Thicker panels definitely the way to go. Time you have at least one layer of mesh in the panel ( to control cracking) you won’t have a lot of concrete cover left at 70mm. Have to say as an EV Contractor turned client side Project Manager you would be a nightmare to work with. People who constantly change their mind inevitably end up with a bigger bill at the end due to variations. Key is plan properly. Plan well. Deliver once.
@@RogerNorman-q6x Phase one, building the sheds went all to plan Roger, no alteration at all. The additional concrete panels were always going to be phase two, depending on funds, no point in ordering stuff I can’t afford.
Remind me not to take you to Dinner when there's more than half a dozen starters and main courses (I like to eat the same day I order 😹😹😹) There's always a third choice - What about putting the panels in the centre of the uprights? (Not in front, not behind, in the middle.

Good Day Farmer P, pardon my addled brain but I'm having a problem with ground level transitions, outside if you raise the grade at the feed barriers how are you transition at the gates? Cheers
just wondering ian, is there any benefit in moving that big steel covered gate onto the new high open end that side , along with the top one? could give a bit of protection weather wise maybe with a wind net above,to fill the full height , and just have a normal gate in its place
@@tractorman810 The high sides face East, not much weather from that direction. I’m leaving it where it is so I can physically separate the two sheds if I need to split the herd.
I admit it would be impossible without the extra income from You tube Richard, Our small herd of Dexters could not generate enough by itself, its why I'm so grateful to all our subscribers and channel members, the folks that "Buy me a coffee and the "Super thanks". 95% of all my online earnings (After the tax man has filtered his bit off) goes into the farm, the other 5% goes on camera gear and data storage. I have a cunning plan for that Keith.
Moveable hinges. just get holes drilled, so you can actually change where you have your gates. whenever it suits the cause/need. (just an idea)

In Ireland it is mostly pre cast concrete what sheds are built with instead of panels

Just weld hinges on all your columns and decide later on which way to go.
Like i said before right it down on paper then you can swap it about on paper before you do anything
The gate planning reminds me of those IQ tests where you move two toothpicks to make a certain shape. 🤷🏼♂️
