Rags to riches but you inherited your weird Aunt's house. You can't sell anything from the house until you buy a computer. You have to keep at least one original thing in each room. You win when you have an entirely furnished coherent house.

this house honestly is what the Decor To The Max kit is supposed to be in it’s entirety. Way too much but it ultimately goes together.
Apart from the lack of bathroom, this actually reminds me of one of the first houses I made in Sims 1. I actually kind of miss that weird, unnerving quirkiness that Sims 1 had. Sims 2 had it somewhat, but not as much, and after that it kind of went away.
I think quirkness and the sims are sinonimous. I hate when people are all like "make sims basic". NOOOOO!
Please put this in your LP and move a family in and let Hazel renovate it!

Regarding crafts tables, imagine they just let kids draw at the dining table like most kids do. I know my parents certainly couldn't afford dedicated tables and stuff for us. My kids desk has a pegboard above it with his craft stuff and having a crayon box item to place or a pegboard to go above the parenthood desk would be so appreciated vs 6,000 specific tables for kid crafting.
Also the price! A box of crayons is $5 or less IRL but in the sims if your kids wanna color it's gonna be like 400 simoleons?
It would be very cool if they could either interact with a dining table by default or just have a box of crayons or paints as the interaction item. Even just a pencil holder like they have for decor for in desks that is more aimed towards kids so you can pretend

this house reminds me of when my bf and i were looking at houses, we looked at one that had been owned by a Mexican artist but had been abandoned for a long time; everything was very stylized and it was like walking through a museum - every room had a different theme and design and there was a room where he kept all of his WIPs and there was just SO much stuff. the home was absolutely beautiful. unfortunately it needed more work than we could afford, but i still think about it every day and i hope whoever bought it gives it the love it deserves 💛
Not gonna lie, the house we live in now was owned by someone who LOVED to mix and match colorful everything. We've been here like, 3 or 4 years now and have painted and changed floors, etc., but this gave me major vibes about living in my house when we first bought it and it made me nostalgic.
The biggest issue is that the kits so far haven't gone on sale - unless I'm wrong??
PS. the only kit that I think is worth it is the blooming rooms one
During the summer sims sale on steam a month or two ago I saw one of the kits on sale for like 2 dollars cheaper. I think it was throwback fit if I’m remembering right. Why only one and why that one specifically? I don’t know but who knows maybe the kits will go on sale more🤷♂️

they were on sale for the month of may on origin. I bought like 2 @ 10% off. i’ve never seen them go on sale for more than 10% tho

I haven’t seen kits go on sale on origin yet. It’s so hard to justify the $5 price when I know during a sale a stuff packs can go down to $7

The kits haven't gone on sale so far unfortunately, and I'm thinking they may never go on sale just based on the fact that they're "only $5" at full price.

They should really do a kit bundle. 3 for $10 USD or the equivalent, something like that. Considering each kit is about 1/3 of a stuff pack, that's honestly what they should be priced at to begin with.
I wish the kits would go on sale lol, there are quite a few I like the look of but just don’t want to spend that much money on them..
I think this video showcases the point of kits pretty well: they're meant as small, heavily themed packs for people who are interested in that specific style and want it in their game. They're not really supposed to be for everyone, and that's fine imo. I think the concept is actually pretty good, like, having the option to get a few cool-looking items for a lower price than other dlc is nice, especially if you can't afford to spend a ton of money on sims dlc. The main problem with kits is that they're too expensive for the amount of content you get, and that's a problem with the sims 4 in general (but it seems especially egregious with kits, because there are so many of them and they never go on sale lol)
I just see people complaining sometimes about stuff like 'there are no toilets in kits, ea fix this!!!!' (Not saying james did that, i saw a comment saying something like this) and I just personally don't see that as a problem at all, there are plenty of toilets in base game and you're never gonna build without base game (unless you challenge yourself to do that like in this video lol). Kits definitely have their major problems, but I think some of the criticism really misses the mark.
Definitely agree about the toilets! When James plays with all packs installed there are like 20 toilets for no reason. No need to be upset there aren't any in kits.
The point for kits is one - profit and money as Sims version of microtransactions. They clearly wanted to go back to that good cash bag from Sims 3 store, so the Sims team could start working on Sims 5, because their normal budget and gains are immediately taken by EA executives.
Those are THE MOST expensive packs in Sims 4 when you consider average price per one item. The illusion of those being cheap is the same thing that makes people lose thousand of coins on gambling, loot boxes and microtransactions.
Also I have never seen someone complain about kits not having toilets - the issue isn't lack of toilets, but the kits themselves.

Watching this video reminded me of the one expansion, one game and one stuff pack build challenges. It would be fun to watch that challenge with kits as well!
In theory Kits are a good idea. What they did was they separated Stuff Packs into cas & build specific Kits and dropped the price to half. And that makes sense, and it is cool for people who have a preference for either cas or build stuff, because now they can get extra content pretty cheap and they are not "forced" to buy the rest they dont care about in a whole Stuff Pack. And just in general for everyone else cause what if you like the build items in a stuff pack but not the cas items? Too bad, that's what u get anyway. With Kits you can mix and match 2 Kits you like and you essentially still pay the price of a Stuff Pack. It should work pretty well.
However the main problem is that Kits don't go on sale, meanwhile Stuff Packs are like 7$ on sale and those offer significantly more content. You just cant compare a Kit with like 20 new cas items for 5$, to a Stuff Pack like Tiny Living for 7$.
But honestly, I personally wouldn't buy Kits even if they did go on sale for like 3-4$. Not when there's literally so much incredible CC available now for free.
There's also, as minimal as it may be in some of the older stuff packs, the added gameplay due to the "hero item". Kits can't hope to compare to receiving a fashion photography career, a haunted house or a knitting skill. Or even something like the hot tub or the butler/vanity table.
For example, laundry day has a laundry system arguably more elaborate than Bust the Dust has for vacuuming AND Cas AND plenty of B&B. It just doesn't compare
Kits just feel like a bit of a cop out. Easy money, even if the content looks good. It also doesn't help that stuff packs have disappeared. It's like they didn't want to go through the trouble of adding that gameplay element anymore

I forgot to mention that Stuff Packs weren't just cas + build items but they all gave us some new gameplay features like a new career, new skill, new lot types, and some of the features literally affected the everyday gameplay. If we consider that, it doesn't make sense that Kits are half the price of Stuff Packs, because the content is like... one third of a Stuff Pack lol.
And now if people want to see new gameplay the cheapest option is a game pack??
Even in the new build kit there's a cute smores item and they didn't even make that functional.. Like they really coudn't make an animation for sims to make smores over a campfire?? Such a misssed opportunity.. That kids backyard kit could have been such a nice stuff pack if they just added some cas and new gameplay for kids... Now it's just... meh.
@@coldnuit yeah exactly. Especially the later stuff packs seem so much more elaborate and impactful in terms of gameplay. And kits don't really have to include gameplay, the existing structure with build sets is fine. But it does show that it's not just half the value of a stuff pack.
I was so disappointed with the little campers kit. What a wasted opportunity for rare kids content. If only there was even one gameplay/animations heavy item in this game that isnt just another activity table 🙄😭 just imagine if this were a stuff pack...
this makes me think of a grandmas house they always have so many random things and funky patterns and nothing ever matches lol and also the kids rooms upstairs could be for their grandkids and same with the backyard like if they made it together to eat smores and watch movies together after getting their grades up that week at school 😂

You should use this to start a new LP challenge series, where the ultimate goal is to renovate the house and make it fully functional, and with each milestone you randomly unlock a new pack to use with your roulette. You shouldn't be allowed to use base game until the very end of the LP, when every other pack has been unlocked.
This house could be the bases of another "rags to riches" gameplay with the Bigwallets. One or more could get this house cheap and spend time fixing up and adding items while raising their household funds to a certain amount. Even adding one of the scenarios about making money as well into the gameplay.
I want to try this now!

If you haven't watched them already, the Super Sim series is really good! I also love the early BigWallet LPs - the bakery and restaurant ones come to mind, but they're all pretty solid.
James, I would love to see a Semaj mini series of the Yes Sim challenge. Semaj must say yes to all pop-ups up, phone calls, invitations, and participate in all holidays.

I could see a grandmother living there with her 4 cats and having one room for her grandchildren when they come over but it being cluttered with things she’s collected over the years. That would be a fun LP and elders don’t get the love they deserve.
I always think that houses like these are what I’d describe as a “renovated church house”. Like it make sense as to why stuff doesn’t quite fit right for any type of type of house floor plan because it wasn’t originally a house.
This feels like watching James from other universe who always clash patterns and uses bright colors
I love this idea! I mean, you have to have base game for the kits so you could easily say that you HAVE to use kits if the item is there but if it isn't you can use base game (for like bathrooms, etc). Overall really fun idea especially when you mentioned not really using kits a lot.
This feels like the home of a Victorian-era eccentric world traveller, after spending a lifetime seeing and collecting different works of art/furniture, and honestly I am very here for it.
If this was a real home for sale I imagine the realtor is hoping the crazy floors and walls will distract buyers from realizing there’s no toilet 😂

I love James's videos. It feels like he's not trying to advertise things they way other simmers are. He's honest about how he feels about kits and doesn't sugar-coat that they're way over-priced and don't have nearly enough content (or really any content, just assets) to justify the price. Love it especially because it can't be easy standing up to EA like that. Proud of you, James!
This is AMAZING. This house is my entire dream aesthetic. I want to take an old building with windows like that or old gothic windows and turn the inside into a maximalist paradise like this.

If they're going to keep doing kits, I actually would enjoy a bathroom kit. I feel like it's hard to do anything particularly interesting with a bathroom, and would like some additional stuff.
I also hope EA watches this and makes note of what stuff they need to add into kits.
Maybe a style of bathroom items that we don't yet have?

Excellent James - This answers a Sims 4 issue, they need to address, release kits with toilets and baths/showers in them.
I unironically love the downstairs of this house lmao. If I bought the kits (lol nope) I would get this house and renovate the bathroom and upstairs but keep the downstairs exactly the same. As other people have said, it's so much that it eventually pulls together beautifully (albeit loudly)
I love the quirkyness of the flooring and wallpapers. But it's funny to hear you scroll through them XD

Idea for a build challenge: each room is a different year of content. So 2014 is base game; 2015 is Outdoor Retreat, Get To Work, and Get Together, etc.
I've always loved your builds James your so good at it!

Now that you have done one that is just kits, here are some build suggestions that maybe you can do:
1. do one with just stuff packs
2. 3rd one with just expansion packs
3. 4th one with just game packs after the new game pack comes out
4. one with 4 levels, one level kits, one level stuff packs, one level game packs, and one level expansion packs.
5. one that contains one random kit (build/buy kits), one random stuff pack, one random game pack, and one random expansion pack.
Let's play suggestion:
Take one of those houses or the one you made with just kits and do a mini rags to riches. If the house with just kits, then give it a little bit of a makeover as your sims makes money either, with stuff from any pack or one random stuff pack, one random game pack, and one random expansion pack. Whether you want to include base game in this would up to you. As for lots traits and challenges, randomize them. Since you don't have a random generator for them and there is no randomize button, maybe pick each one with your eyes closed and for lot challenges maybe the same way, but with a limited number of clicks. Whatever is chosen is what you have to go with and you can't remove them or change them.
For the sims that will be in the house, whether you use Semaj and roommate or whomever you choose, choose their outfits this way: pick one random kit (CAS kits), one random stuff pack, one random game pack, and one random expansion pack and their outfits can only be from those packs. Whether you want to include base game in this would up to you. Maybe use your Random Trait Generator for their traits.
Maybe you could put all the jobs on wheel, with one slot that says part-time job and spin it to see which the job they get. If it lands on part-time job, you would get to decide 1 or 2 and what they are.
Possible titles for LP: The Random Rags to Riches, The Randomized Rags to Riches or Rags to Riches: Randomized
This is wonderful. I've done this already because I like the challenge. But when I've made it, I only had the Country Kitchen and Industrial Loft Kits.
Only 1 floor, because no stairs. The barn door was my only outside door choice, inside it was the other Loft door. For my bathroom, I had the sink and some plants... the only pot option, unless I use that bucket with various round objects depending on the swatch.
I now have the Little Campers kit, so there are new options, but it really doesn't add that much: single bed, radio and a projector screen. We really need that Bathroom Kit!
I'm tempted to get the Courtyard Oasis Kit, just to have to option to have a second floor. Haha.
You should try this again, but randomly have one of the non CAS kits not available. Either way, there is still a way to cook since there is the Kitchen Kit and the Campers Kit.
Going Victorian instead of a Mediterranean syle house was definitely a choice. Feel like you could do something really cute open-air and planty.

I actually really like this house, ya there’s a few quirky things I’d tone down, or repetitive items I’d swap out but I like it. It makes me think of an old historic building that someone is renting, and bc they’re renting they couldn’t put trees in the ground but they really wanted trees so they found a loophole by using giant pots. The original owner had a tacky taste but again they’re renting so they couldn’t change the walls/floors or renovate in any permanent way so they kind of just bought pieces of furniture here n there thinking itd help w the wall/floor situation, and some pieces they have plans for upcycling but haven’t got around to yet, while other pieces are sentimental/family heirlooms they didn’t have the heart to get rid of so they just placed em about so they don’t get lost, broken, or forgotten. it’s their first time living on their own and they’re thinking this is a rental, I can’t renovate, so none of my stuff fits, but oh well, I’ll do what I can to make it work until I am able to own. And I like that a lot! Especially the back yard, like the swing came w the house, and they bought an IKEA plant thing trying to class it up, but then wanted friends over for a bbq where they all got to talking about diy projector/screens sooo it went from high hopes to a lil hodgepodgey. I really like it I think there’s sooo much story to this house.

This looked like a real challenge to build. This house looks like it was made with whatever could be found in the real world by someone with little sense of style. It also highlights how few build/buy Kits we got.

The colors in this build remind me of the abundance of daycare builds when the toddler update came out. Just so quirky and colorful!
