  • High Island is a special place for birds and birders on the Texas gulf coast. Every spring warblers stop at High Island on their migration route that takes them over the gulf. The Houston Audubon Society owns and manages several important tracts of land in the area as preserves.
    This video shows the rookery at the Smith Woods reserve. Every spring herons, egrets, spoonbills and cormorants nest in trees on a small island. The alligators patiently await meals on the beaches of the island. In this video, the birds are still mating, building nests and laying on eggs. The trees on the island are still recovering from hurricane damage.
