Couldn’t agree more, especially on the last point about confidence and self assurance. I work with tons of students who are really nervous about using a cane mostly because they are afraid to stand out, but once they get comfortable with it and really embrace it, so many of them increase their confidence exponentially.

I’ve been using the cane since age of five and I’m 20 now. And I won’t be where I am today without my cane. It’s my safety and my independence. I love McCain! Thanks for this video.

I think number seven is the most important and your cane makes you feel more confident and independent and you can do more. Number seven really uses all the things that you talked about before that and without your cane you would not be able to know where drop off curb or those raised areas in the pavement to identify the entrance. In school I think everyone had a cane because you heard a lot of them around you and in the hallway and you know that a lot of people are there so they help with that too and to find the doorway to the classroom. I really do not know why anyone would not use a cane. I think it helps to use Aira and the Be My Eyes App and your dog with it if you really want to be independent because your cane cannot do everything for you like to identify what something is at a store and things like that. With your cane you get a lot more people asking if you need help with anything so it helps with that too. Great video. i love my cane. i feel much safer and more independent when i use it. awesome video.
I was very reluctant to use a white cane, and was discouraged from using one because I wasn’t “blind enough.” Falling down stairs, tripping on curbs and walking into things begged to differ. Once I started using one, I did worry about negative attention, some of which I did receive, I still do over 10 years later, but it comes down to my personal safety. However, I do find some drivers where I live think they’ll win some prize for actually trying to hit you with their vehicles. 👩🏽🦯🦯
You are correct, it is difficult to first use it, I still find that I think everyone is watching me. I don’t know if they are but a self conscious feeling is hard to overcome. It has helped to announce that I’m probably about to do something stupid so watch out! Like you, tripped too many time’s and fallen down too many stairs, the cane helps to avoid unknown obstacles.
@@TripReviews Yes, people do stare. I have enough of my residual vision left where I can see that, depending on the circumstances. So, depending on my mood, I’ll say something like, “Don’t just stand there staring, an offer of help would be nice.” Or I’ll ask if they need help. The response is priceless! 🤣😈

Not being "blind enough" is why I still don't use one. Been called a liar by teachers even in front of the class
Hi Mike. This is just a quick one, as I will watch this properly later as a blind long cane music, full time at the moment, as I’m waiting for my fourth guide dog, and someone who works, not as an orientation and ability, specialist or anything like that, but in the international guide dog world in the charity sector with different schools, I know how invaluable this can be to service users across the place, and as well to orientation and mobility specialists across the world :-) keep it up and thank you for the content
I would like to hear a video about using your Guide dog and Aira and the Be My Eyes App with your cane. They really help a lot with Orientation and Mobility but I know that a lot of people are afraid to use them from people I have talked to so I think hearing a video from you would help them decide to try it too.
Can you do a college video on tips of using it in college? I will be going to college and would love more information
Great idea! I can work on a video giving some O&M tips for college.
That is a great idea because like I said we had a lot of people with canes at school and it is different there than everywhere else because of all the people who are around you and finding the right classroom and things like that. The instructors help a lot though to identify things and help you in the classroom but sometimes you hear things happen that you are not sure about and that happened to me.

A blog I share with my high school students is by a young lady named Veronica. You might like her blog titled "Veroniiiica with Four Eyes." She tells about getting organized and traversing college life as a visually impaired student.
Still don't use a cane but I need to. Recently I guess I cut somebody off (on a sidewalk) when I couldn't see well in the sun. I thought I was going to get beat up the way the guy was cursing and shouting at me.
Do you have any tips to keep a student going in a straight line.

Hi Great video x I have been using a cane for a while now but I'm still thinking about a Guide dog do I stay with a cane or look into Guide dog. what should I do?
Hi, there is a few things I would recommend. If possible try and meet with an O&M specialist who can walk you through the process and assess if a guide dog would be a good fit for you. Also, check out different guide dog schools websites, particularly admission requirements to see if you meet the qualifications. Hope this helps at least a little.
Your dog makes you feel safer than just the cane and I like using Aira and the Be My Eyes App with them too because they all help a lot with orientation and Mobility and daily living skills.
What's the best cane for a beginner in your opinion.
Mike,how can I find objects that falls on the ground or in other areas that hides the objects that make sounds but the rug hide it
I have a quick question. I've lost a great deal of vision. My eye doctor told me that I'm "blind"; Should I change from the white cane with the red at the botton to a solid white cane? What is the segnificants in the colors?
For instance does the white with red just mean visually impaired and the white cane mean blind?
Do you sometimes use a cane?
Hi, I don't personally use a cane. I just teach people how to use one.
