    When you start your company, you can Licence or Purchase other Vehicles or Engines,Chassis, or Gearbox from other companies (RnD>Outsource button>Select from the left. Also "All Companies" from the Filter list ). That way you can manufacture and sell products so you can make a profit (or have less loss) from the start, until you can make your own vehicle, which took you a total of 18 months of having a net loss!

    Compared to the original game, which I played over 30 years ago, this version seems somewhat more complicated than the original version. From what I remember, it was easier to get your first body. The security and consumption were probably not the best. But it was developed by the engineers they hired. And if you managed to have the maximum number of engineers, you were far ahead in technology.

    A few observations- though before I begin I should tell you that the mega menu, specifically the auto-commands section is a lifesaver on micro management. Autoproduce specifically will micro your factories for you
    Economy of scale matters in this game. The material cost of the components and vehicle in the designer are pre-scale bonuses, so the actual cost of the components drops drastically, but only once you've begun large-scale mass production. Once you actually have significant production capacity, it's often a good idea to sell your car at a loss at first- that will fund the scale bonus increases better than lowering the price every month. As an interesting note, this is how actual car manufacturers behave irl
    Designing a car as a specific style (sedan, pickup, etc) does not preclude customers in other categories buying the car. What's more, customers do have certain expectations for horsepower ratings, handling ability, etc that the game doesn't make particularly obvious. Combined with the fact that slider cost increases scales nonlinearly (ie, cost goes up less for the first few ticks and significantly more for the last few) consider putting a tick or two in most sliders, and tread carefully before going over three fourths or so. Oh, and some sliders within the same category (testing, design, so on) seem to compound cost increases in certain designers.
    Customer expectations change over time. This is most significant for Horsepower, acceleration, cargo capacity, etc, as the stars are relative and therefore sort of autoadjust for you. The point that I'm getting at is that while the fuel economy 'importance' is high, they'll be fine with like 12mpg.
    Early per capita is so low that even though there is demand for a wide variety of vehicle types, the vast majority of people can't realistically afford anything remotely resembling what they want. For that reason, focusing on sports and luxury cars is suicide. You can't possibly design a sports car with both reasonable stats and price, and everyone that would be buying luxury cars are being forced into econobox range instead. This changes in the late 1910s but before that it's brutal.
    Early gas engines are trash. The most commonly suggested strategy for the 1900 start is to build the cheapest possible phaeton with a 1hp single cylinder motor. This works, but a 1hp steam engine works better. It's more cost effective, and brings loads more torque and smoothness and other stats. Only problem is reduced demand for steam, but that's not as much of an issue when you can't possibly be meeting full demand in the first place. Plus, the game is somewhat dynamic- if you build a bunch of really good steam cars that will increase the popularity of steam. As an aside, factories increase economic growth of the cities they are in- somewhat at least.
    To make it clear, the most important stat in the beginning is cost. You will _never_ be able to make a car with a practical level of performance without being forced to price it out of the vast, vast majority of your customer base. To give an example my first phaeton usually costs less than $400 in material costs. Yeah, the whole thing. It's type rating tends to hover around 38, making it both better and significantly cheaper than anything the AI can make.
    Dublin has the lowest corporate tax rate I've seen at 12%, but the tax rate changes through the game.
    You'll get some contracts internationally, but others, like commercial fleets, you only get if you have a branch in the city it's for. Commercial fleets generally don't buy too often, but if you have branches in several cities you should be able to make a profit selling off extra production.
    Lastly, setting your demographic focus to the ultra-low segment will knock off about $100 to $200 from the final product- assuming you don't invest in demographic testing.

    I usually start with a 6L V4 engine. The early truck contracts need over 100ft-lbs in most cases, and by the time they are a real thing the year 00 engine is stupid cheap to make. Sadly now that the CPU companies learn from you they'll start building cars with V4s making it harder to pick out your engines in the model comparisons in the magazine.
    As technology gets better I shrink the motor till its just under 5L. (lol), then let it live there for a long time. Makes for cheap motors that work in anything that isn't a racecar.

    Also the Body designer does matter. Room inside, cargo, etc all are based on the body. You don't have to decorate it, but you might want to pick a pre-made that matches what you need, or at least do the basic body morphs.

    This is one of those games that I've always bounced off. I've owned it since it became available for sale in like 2011 and have put a grand total of 11 hours into it, split across a bunch of attempts. Just doesn't gel with me. That said, I do generally enjoy watching other people play it and look forward to this LP.
    On the subject of Automation: The Car Company Tycoon game, which the devs will agree needs a better name but unfortunately they're kinda stuck with it now. I have 755 hours in it, despite only owning it since December 2018. It's very much in development, the tycoon half especially, but I urge you not to discard it as not being a real tycoon game just because it also has pretty graphics. The campaign definitely isn't as in-depth as Gearcity, especially at this time, but that doesn't mean they're not working to make it a detailed and in-depth campaign that's fun for even tycoon nerds to play.
    Personally, I find that the engine and car design of Automation is far superior, because your choices feel like meaningful choices that matter instead of just a bunch of magic sliders. I don't generally even bother decorating the car because that's not the point of the game for me.
    Edit: God, looking at this game letting you make a 2.6l I3 is one of those times where I'm reminded of how enormously unrealistic it is. In reality that thing would tear itself to pieces before making any actual power. But Gearcity has always been a tycoon game with a car designer stapled on, so that makes sense. For reference by the way, the Tiny Friendly Giant, at 2l, is the biggest I3 ever used in a car. And that's a modern supercar engine with all the improvements to engine smoothness that have been made in the last 120 years. Most I3s are 1l or less.

    • @TortugaPower
      @TortugaPower  2 роки тому

      I've never given Automation a fair shake either, so maybe it's time for me to dive into that one, too!
      Were there I3 engines made prior to like 1980 or even 1970? I don't know much about this, other than knowing that generally engine size has decreased over the decades (for whatever reasons: efficiency, lighter chassis, etc.)

    • @VENTDEV
      @VENTDEV 2 роки тому

      > God, looking at this game letting you make a 2.6l I3 is one of those times where I'm reminded of how enormously unrealistic it is. In reality that thing would tear itself to pieces before making any actual power.
      Incorrect. Bore and stroke sizes were significantly larger in the brass era. Compression ratios were much less in the brass era because manufacturering wasn't as technologically advanced. So no. It wouldn't "tear itself apart."
      To give an example from the Era, the 1904 Ford Model C had a 2L Flat 2. That's a greater bore and stroke than a 2.6L Inline 3. Hell, Fiat made the Beast of Turin, the Fiat S76 (look it up on youtube.) A 28L i4... *EDIT* And spending a little time in my books, you may find the 1905 Rolls Royce 15HP, uses a 3L 3-cylinder...
      The bore and stroke decrease in the game as time progresses. So in 2020, you'll have a harder time (using more of the slider) making a 2.6L i3. Although, it can still probably doable in the game. (And no, it wouldn't tear itself apart with modenr compression ratios either.)
      The game allows historically accurate numbers, it's just most people don't know their history. Yes, you can still make some wacky engines and throw them in cars. But hell, the game simulates everything from lawn mowers to massive ships. The game lacks regulations, European displacement taxes, emissions regulations, safety regulations, fuel standards, etc. That's the real reason displacements shrunk to levels you think are only engineering feasible.

    • @MrHamof
      @MrHamof 2 роки тому

      @@TortugaPower According to Wikipedia, one of the first Straight 3 engines used in a car was a 900cc engine in 1953.
      The thing with engine size going down over time is that, while that's true, some configurations don't really allow for larger sizes. Straight 3s are very inherently unstable, and it takes a fair bit of very clever engineering to get them to be stable. Most small-ish engines have been straight 4 engines, because they're much easier to make stable (And thus also smooth).
      Well, smooth is relative, but still.
      So as the technology to make engines smoother has advanced, straight 3s have been getting bigger. In general less cylinders are more efficient, which is why they want straight 3s when possible.
