I've only had my S50 for less then 6 weeks and only had clear skies for 3 days. Never had the money or time before to buy and learn astrophotography before. The Framing mode was great for me when shooting Orion. I loved watching the image develop on the phone screen. I got 46 minutes of images in a little over 2 hours. I was happy with that. With the price drop to $450 bucks, it's a great buy for the Noobs like me. I sit in the house while the S50 does it's thing. Plus the updates have been great.
@@brizzle3903 It will be worth the wait!! ;-) I've been enjoying mine since last February and was fortunate enough to get it before the total solar eclipse!
Update was a game changer for me that narrow fov was the scopes only weakness being able to frame a full m31 is sweet!! IMO you cant beat the Seestar s50 for the price and it is the best product for new astronomers .The fact that it does so much and is so cheap makes it better than a visual scope of the same price that will only frustrate and not impress a new astronomer, the Seestar has ease of use and the wow factor. 👍
Game changer. I was unaware that the update also included intelligent noise reduction. Of course with any new equipment or upgrade, the clouds roll in. Thanks Wido.
I appreciate the review. The new framing and intelligent denoising features represent significant advancements. Given that most observed objects are small, such as galaxies and clusters, the availability of the framing feature for larger subjects enhances the instrument's versatility beyond the camera. An S50 has been donated to my local university in place of an old visual telescope to promote astronomy in my area for use in their community outreach program.
I've had my S50 since Jan. Wasn't sure how much I would appreciate/use mosaic however, when I saw the rotation/framing capability, my initial impression was WOW. I do have to rely on guys like you to compare these systems but it seems to me, more light(larger aperture) can outweigh camera quality up to a point. Are you looking at denoising feature? Kinda cool.
Sitting on the fence still waiting to buy a smart telescope for public outreach work. Would love it if ZWO put a larger sensor and EQ ability into the S50. That would make me buy it. Until then, I’ll stick with my standard mount/scopes and astro cameras for imaging. Great review Wido. Dr. B from Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦
If you're thinking of using a smart telescope for public Outreach then I would say the s30, the s50 or if you're willing to spend more money the vaonis 2 is the right way to go. You're going to get visible great results right away four people to see on screen. Also ease of setup and time are very important. If you're doing this to Spur interest in younger crowds this really is the best way to do it. You could always go with the Dharf 3. It has equatorial mode and from what I've seen it does a fairly decent job.
The s50 doesn't need EQ mode or a larger sensor. That would defeat the original purpose of the scope in the first place: affordability, zero clutter, and ease of use... I love my s50 and if you want this for outreach, YOU DON'T WANT AN EQ MODE or other complexities, like polar alignment. That will come later when they'll want to build their own astro rigs, if they want to. But truth be told, the Seestar is so damn good, they may not want or need such a rig❤
Hmm... let me add that for the past 30 years, all professional telescopes have been built on alt-az mounts, lol, paired with a rotating camera for accurate equatorial tracking. Clear skies, everyone!
With Mosaic mode, the sensor is now (in effect) an 8MP sensor with an effective field of view of 2.6º x 1.5º, and Mosaic mode also compensates for field rotation as well. I also have larger gear (Celestron 9.25") but Mosaic mode is honestly a total game changer.
I have tried the new update. For M 31 you need a lot of time. After 45 minutes I stopped because 2 corners are still black and nothing happens. The picture looks great.
If the corners are not filled in then you're very far from full coverage and will see high noise around the edges. It spirals out from the center and the final passes are actually done with the exposures taken part way outside the mosaic frame to clean them up. Any time you have dark edges/corners still, it means you have only 10-20s of exposure on the closest visible edge. And even when you see it *just* fill the frame, there's still one more complete pass around the edges to be done before it starts over. So far, the best result I've gotten was on M42 at only 1.3x zoom out, where it claimed about 75 minutes of total exposure time, and I had let it run almost 3 hours. Looking at the sub frames, it looks like it got full frame coverage a little over 3 times (with lots of overlap, so hard to say how much time each individual spot got, although the edges always get less). TL;DR: You gotta be patient with mosaic/framing mode to get good results.
I appreciate the updates on the part of the ZWO team to keep their product competitive. I am looking forward to a planning feature so I can leave it out all night and wake up to deep sky pics in the morning!
the problem with mosaic, is that you need many more exposure hours and not sure if in the same session, does it have a pause option to continue in the next night? also stacking them and stiching them manually is quite complex. Nowdays i would buy Dwarf3, I own S50. Also you need to consider that S50 has field rotation issues wheter Dwarf3 does not, and that is not a minor issue either.
@@johndaley9188 of course is a deciding factor, one of many, that someone buying shall take into consideration. And for sure everyone gets rid of it by cropping but that makes you loose a portion of the frame. So as a S50 owner, im happy S50 has mosaic mode and that ZWO keeps upgrading its software. If you would have to buy one now, would you go for S50 or D3 and why one over the other?
Framing has been an awesome upgrade to the Seestar firmware; but the new intelligent noise reduction is also really nice. I suspect that it is taking dark frames during shooting - as you can only use noise reduction while taking an image and not on images that you've already stored... but the results are very good. It's just another feature that really helps.
Seriously considering a smart scope to replace my 14 inch dob. Need clarification - in real time observing, how long doesit take Seestar to show the horsehead ok? how about the dust clouds in Andromeda? i see a good picture can take an hour or more. I'm not into astrophotography and want a real time experience. Can youstopthe image loading at a certian point - Ex - before the trapezeum in orion is washed out?
I was hoping this was about the update that came out a few days ago but it was about the mosaic update that’s been out for a month? I too, like someone else commented had some problems with dropping connections since the update I did last night. I do like the mosaic feature, now if the could change to an eq method .
This new update really takes the Seastar capabilities to the next level. Now we just need a scheduling mode to be able to take shots at different times at night without having to be there. Have you any leaked information about this?
yeah it's a game changer. The only issue I've had with it was when m31 went to the zenith late in the imaging session and it started dropping every frame. Other than that its been great.
I think it looks pretty good now. I have a 150mm goto reflector ( F5 at 750mm ) with mid tier EPs. ( Celestron x-Cel ) I like the goto for looking and maybe this updated S50 for imaging. The idea of having me and my iPad Air inside while the s50 is outside working is a nice thought.
I used the new version and it worked great. Then they did some sort of app update that shows the new S30 Seestar alternating with the S50. Even though I can connect with wifi the connection keeps dropping. Power cycling and using the reset button not working. The worst part is we’ve had absolutely beautiful conditions here the last few days.
So far I've only managed to get *one* target to give me more than 30 minutes of total exposure time, which is M42, probably because it's so bright and feature rich. I stopped it at 75 minutes of exposure time (close to 3 hours realtime) for a 1.3x frame, which worked out to a little over 3 complete passes over the frame. I've been trying to get the Horsehead and Flame nebulas for last 3 nights running, and they generally fail somewhere around 22-25 minutes exposure time on a 1.4-1.5x frame. The stacking error rate just starts to increase more and more and until it stops stacking. It almost always fails in the upper left corner of the frame which is the last place in its spiral out imaging pattern before it starts another layer of the spiral. What I usually see there when it happens is 1. that corner shows a lot of sensor noise, 2. there aren't a lot of stars there (this target is very dim as it is) and because it's the last place in the pattern 3. there's been a bunch of sky rotation since the last time it was there (an hour realtime so at least 15 degrees), so it struggles to align the stack. Last night after it failed at 22 minutes.. I just let it keep trying. After about 30 minutes it managed to start stacking again, got another 7 minutes of exposures and gave up at 29 minutes total (also in the far upper left corner) and then never recovered. The support drones in the ZWO Seestar forum have acknowledged (as much as they ever do) that there is an issue with mosaic stacking and they claim there's another update coming this week, so hopefully this will be addressed.

I've got s50 and this is far to long and drawn out feature in mosaic mode. Why can't they just make a telescope that you can manually use a knob or something to change to focal length of the telescope so when it's zoomed in on a target you can then zoom out to get more of the image or if something is further away you can zoom into it instead of fixed length and having to use something to get larger targets. Should be simple to engineer.
There is no major update? The bug fixes in 2.2.0 are still present. This video is a complete scam. It doesn't fix the horizontal calibration bug or the focus issues.

These functions have already existed for a while. This video is quite late
damn i was hoping this was going to be about the latest update......that one deffo need explanations
It is an essentially a mosaic mode. I’m surprised it is being featured as something new
It's a new feature, I don't think they claim it's a new invention.
But its $890 ITS NOT CHEAP
I have buy it for 700€ at summer.
In Europe.
(In Europe are the prices much higher for electrinics, energy, and technology.)
in Australia I got my Seestar S50 today for $799 plus postage.
@@omygodtwo australian or american dollars?
so we get mosaic mode before eq mode... way to dissapoint zwo!
Not a game changer at all, in fact, it drops LOT of shots so makes it pretty unusable
who would buy this? does this make better pics than just a good dslr with a 200mm lens and stackingthe images?
I cant satck by deep sky stack it give me only mosaic subs but the normal sub doesn’t shows up any one can help
