I have been a Theosophist all my life! All religious societies have their mystical societies separate from the main religion, as most people would not understand what they are speaking about. That’s why it was the secret doctrine. These Masters are very spiritually evolved and very ancient souls, who have great mastery over many things. HPB did most of her writing whilst in transe instructed by various Masters. I used to get the American Theosophist magazine for many years. I live in Cyprus in the Mediterranean. I so enjoy Thnking allowed. Good work. Thank you.
Thank you for this respectful tribute to one of my favorite people and a spiritual inspiration to me. And thank you for speaking up to say the investigation was so flawed that it was later withdrawn. HPB was flawed as a human -- as are we all -- but she was absolutely AMAZING woman. Also, thanks to Gary Lachman for your extensive oeuvre -- I've read nearly a dozen of your books, all of which are great.
Same here. I belonged to the Theosophical Society in New York from 1963 to 1972 when I moved to Colorado. I was introduced to it via the NY Times that I read a little every day just before work. I was at a crossroads of my life when I saw 2 books advertised by the Times that intrigued me. I ordered them adn found they came from the Theosophical Society. It opened up a whole new world for me. Later on I investigated other things but I will always be grateful to her and their teachings.
I still think there's a movie in the HPB story, maybe set in Bessant's house at the end of her life, we see the key events in flashback. The opening shots are the carriage turning up at Bessant's and a stout elderly woman climbing down, then the horse and cart with her effects, chaise longue, lots of oriental rugs, mysterious trunks, samovar. Sort of Mary Poppins for the 21st century. Gary is the one to write the screenplay. 🎉
I found the Secret Doctrine read like an enormous Rorschach blot, but occasionally points of uncanny clarity would jump out at you. Issis Unveiled was a bit more penetrable.
Given the life of Olcott -- lead investigator on the Lincoln assassination, graduate of the Eleusinian-linked "Delta Psi" fraternity at Columbia &c -- why isn't his background more thoroughly investigated? Then there's her role on behalf of the British Empire in India -- described as being put in "psychic prison" by Steiner &c. Who was "fronting" and who was actually "behind the curtain" . . . ??
I love this. But I do find it odd that he wouldn't offer an opinion regarding her lies and storytelling. I'm not asking her to hate on her. But odd that he never speculates about her demonstrable shadow side.
The Theosophical Society still has a presence in Sydney, Australia where they still maintain a bookshop, library & lecture rooms and a retreat house. Also the young Krishnamurti spent time there during his time being educated by Annie Besant and Ledbetter
Interesting....Buddhism would have been much more aligned with what she appeared to value. I wonder why Hindus and not Buddhists? Her portrayal of the Buddha often aligned more with her Theosophical ideals than with the historical or scriptural accounts in the Pali Canon or other Buddhist texts. While she contributed to the popularization of Buddhist concepts in the West, her interpretations are often critiqued for blending Buddhist ideas with speculative elements and departing from traditional Buddhist doctrines...why would she presume to change that which she claimed to value?

That was very informative. Thank You Jeffrey!
When can we have a special on Giordano Bruno a giant of esoteric knowledge please?
It's always very nice to see Gary Lachman. He even remebers her patronimic name - Helena PETROVNA Blavatsky.

Thank you, Jeffrey for this video talk. I live in the Theosophical Colony in Mumbai and can heartily vouch for the celestial vibrations therein.

Your guest...so knowledgeable. Wonderful insight. Thank you.
Haha. I was literally looking for rolling papers at the moment Gary mentions how she would aport them. I still can't find them!
Superb podcast! Thank you Jeffrey ... 🙏🏼
What about Alice Bailey?
This was a very interesting talk on MPB.
So, I'm not the only one that was challenged by Blavatsky's Secret Doctrine.
Much of it was unintelligible. Or just poorly written. Not seeking to communicate but to obscure.
