The smaller green coconuts are not really for eating but used in the puja rituals.

Kolkata doesn't look very charming at first sight but when you slow down and feel, there is some unexplicable magic in the air. Just like Mumbai has, can't explain that either. It makes you want to live the fullest.😊

A famous Bengali songwriter Kabir Suman wrote -" এই শহর জানে আমার প্রথম সবকিছু, পালাতে চাই যত সে আসে আমার পিছু পিছু". Loosely translated it means, this city has been a spectator of all the things I experienced for the first time, and although I want to leave, it never stops following me behind. I have grown up in this neighborhood. Fell in love, had my first cigarette and spent countless hours bargaining for fish at the Gariahat market. This place has changed significantly since the early 90s but what has not is the idyllic charm, the quiet solitude you suddenly find in the middle of the alleyways at a stone's throw from the usual hustle and bustle of Gariahat. I currently live in rural Illinois some 9000 miles away from home, however thanks to the wonders of a globalized world and your beautiful UA-cam channel, I get to be nostalgic about this place. I love how you are non judgemental and open about India which, sad to say, many of my fellow country men are not.

What abt the guy who used to sell fish fries, chicken cutlets in a glass box in the afternoon just in front of the market. And a stationery shop near Dover lane, just opp to Singhi park puja, who used to sell salami and sausages. This was in late eighties and early nineties.

The bamboo and other materials are reused all year round for weddings and all sorts of events. Fun to know: A lot of the themed ones, like some you shared in a previous video, get auctioned. They are often used for other pujas in the smaller cities in West Bengal. I believe some are bought by Bengali/ Indian communities in other countries for their events or Durga Puja next year. This has been a way to recoup costs for many years now, barring Covid. Much love to Hayes.

3:46 In Kolkata, most pastries and cakes are made eggless because egg is considered non vegetarian here. Even though the nonveg population is huge, a lot of people eat veg in specific days of the week. So, you'll always find an eggless options. But trust me, you wouldn't notice a difference they have absolutely mastered it and this is not for any particular bakery, you wouldn't notice a difference in most renowned bakeries.

Thanks man, This is near to my home... You, as a foreigner, showing this the first time on UA-cam... Atleast I haven't seen anyone doing this ... Everyone shows just New-market, and people get bad impression about Kolkata from that... There is a paid tour company( I have seen them in foreigners' videos), they only shows North and central part of Kolkata, and those places are way too crowded and dirty... Visit Kolkata during February( specially 14th 😂)... We have nearby Beaches too... Digha, Mandarmoni, around 200km away(Bus/train available). But I think you need to understand little Bengali in those places...😂😂

Here's a list of Bengali vegeterian dishes if you are interested:
    1. Shukto
A mildly bitter and creamy mixed vegetable dish made with bitter gourd, raw banana, potatoes, drumsticks, and flavored with mustard paste and milk. It is often served at the beginning of a traditional Bengali meal.
    2. Aloo Posto
A simple and iconic dish made with potatoes cooked in a poppy seed (posto) paste, flavored with mustard oil and green chilies.
    3. Chanar Dalna
A vegetarian curry made with fresh paneer (chana) and potatoes in a lightly spiced tomato and ginger gravy.
    4. Labra
A mixed vegetable medley, often made with pumpkin, eggplant, sweet potatoes, radish, and spinach, flavored with panch phoron (Bengali five-spice mix).
    5. Begun Bharta
Mashed eggplant seasoned with mustard oil, green chilies, and sometimes onions. This is a flavorful and simple dish.
    6. Echorer Dalna
A unique Bengali preparation of unripe jackfruit (referred to as "echor") cooked in a rich and spiced gravy, often considered the vegetarian equivalent of mutton curry.
    7. Mochar Ghonto
A dry curry made with banana blossom (mocha), grated coconut, and a blend of aromatic spices.
    8. Chholar Dal
A thick lentil dish made with Bengal gram (chana dal), sweetened slightly with sugar or jaggery, and flavored with fried coconut pieces, bay leaves, and mustard seeds.
    9. Dhokar Dalna
A quintessential Bengali dish where lentil cakes (made from ground chana dal) are fried and cooked in a flavorful tomato-based curry.
    10. Paturi (Vegetarian)
Traditionally prepared with fish, this dish also has a vegetarian version using paneer or banana flowers wrapped in banana leaves and steamed with mustard paste and mustard oil.
    11. Mishti Pulao
A fragrant and mildly sweet Bengali rice dish made with gobindobhog rice, dry fruits, and aromatic spices like cinnamon and bay leaves.
    12. Patoler Dolma
Pointed gourd (parwal) stuffed with a spiced mixture of lentils or grated coconut, then cooked in a light tomato or mustard-based gravy.

Pls visit Princep ghat .. pls visit shantiniketan . College street, Chinese restaurants( tangra) , park street.. these expensive boutiques in Hindustan park or vivekananda park don’t suffice Kolkata..

Thank you for this video. I am very excited my wife and I will be travelling to Kolkata this weekend, it will be my first time visiting the city in over 20 years! And by chance we are staying in the same hotel as you 😂. I had a couple of questions I’d be really grateful if you could answer, how did you manage with your mobile in Kolkata did you use an e-sim or did you arrange a local sim? And what was the best way to get around the city? Is Uber reliable? And finally how easy is it to pay with card in Kolkata? Should we expect to mostly use cash? Thank you so much if you are able to advise!!!
