Probably the knots per square inch is very high. It it a Persian hand knotted rug. It took thousands of hours to create. It is made of wool, which is hand dyed. Last but not least, it is so durable it can get dirty like that and can be cleaned. Rugs like that will last 100 years or longer if properly cared for.

How do you get a rug back to soft texture after it hangs to dry?
All the carpets we wash are soft and smooth after using washing softeners.
