Ishido sent ninja to kidnap Mariko. Mariko sacrificed herself to embarrass Ishido and turn the other lords against him. Mariko is Crimson Sky. Her death was necessary to free the hostages so that the nobles can switch sides and join Toranaga.
By sacrificing her life in the service of her lord, Mariko restored the honor of her family, which was her greatest desire. The shame on her family was so great that it could not be erased without Mariko sacrificing her life.
This show is going to sweep the Emmy's. Such an interesting part of history depicted in an amazing way. You can find Mariko's real-life counterparts "Death Poem" (Haiku) from 400 years ago, and it's beautiful.

I can't say Ishido sending ninjas WASN'T part of 'Crimson Sky'. Toranaga knew he had to sacrifice the Queen to get that check-mate. Knowing he's got his goshawk Yabushige on the scene might just be part of his contingency plan. Can't wait to find out in the finale! 😬

I think Crimson Sky was the lose-lose situation for Ishido, whether or not Mariko would have died. I do think Toranaga knew Mariko would more than likely die though. I HIGHLY doubt Yabushige and the abduction attempt was foreseen by Toranaga.
@@TheSilenthvok When I was watching the episode the minute Ishido came in with those papers and stopped Mariko from committing seppuku I thought "you guys need to GTFO ASAP now cuz this man is gonna kill you himself"
Ishido had a very limited number of moves at that point.
If I could forsee that just as a casual couch dummie I have no doubt that the strategic genius that is Toranaga could not also have predicted it 🙄
....but DID he? We don't know. Maybe we'll find out in the finale, maybe not
