Holy shit! Is the audio good in this game! I spent over an hour testing the different audio settings with my headset to find the best. I play on the Pro using the Platinum headset. To experience the amazing audio correctly I recommend these settings. Headphones, small dynamic range, binaural audio enabled, and turn OFF VSS/3D audio switch on the headset (VSS/3d only messes with the great binaural audio). Then find a staircase with a creaky chandelier, stand between the two floors and experience the amazing directional binaural audio first hand. Move the camera around and you can tell the exact location of sounds whether up/down, left/right, behind/below. I find that large dynamic range is a bit too sharp and tinny, and it also makes your footsteps much too loud in the headset.
I used the Astro A40s. The surround sound is insane on this game. Could pinpoint where Mr.X was and where he was going. Leons campaign in the Parking Garage with the dog barks echoing. Unbelievable.
EndlessFunctionality Using the audio I always knew exactly where Mr. X was. I could avoid him very easily. I could tell what floor he was on, which door he just opened. I ran circles around the guy and rarely saw him while running around the police station. Pro tip: fire the gun to draw his attention to a different area, then ditch him.
@@MasterMayhem78 Yup. Another way I found that ditches him is after you open up the statue with the 3 medallions in the main lobby. He can be chasing you and will stop at the top of the stairs leading down. Take elevator down, then right back up. Hey, you can get rid of those greyish blacks by changing the color space in the display options menu from sRGB to REC. 709. The game looks absolutely stunning and dripping in atmosphere with only the light from the torch illuminating whats in front of you and your peripheral vision. Also like you mentioned the highest texture setting didn't negatively affect performance or cause stuttering. I tested on a 4gb 1050ti. The game is constantly swapping textures from from Vram to system memory as my VRAM usage remained constant but RAM usage shot up.

Bit disappointed that none of the tech analysis videos touch the rec.709 color profile setting that fixes the bit washed out look on the PC version and makes it on par with the console versions.
It's under the display settings, at least on my screen it improved the colors drastically with both display using limited HDMI black levels and also full HDMI black levels, of course considering that your display's calibrated and you do the in-game calibration taking both the dark settings and the brighter areas in consideration due to game's dynamic color correction.
I'm playing max settings in sRGB on asus 3440x1440 monitor in sRGB image mode. I thought the same but it's simply not true. If you calibrate the brightness settings correctly it's not washed out at all.
Just use Reshade's LumaSharpen to compensate TAA blurriness, I use that for every game with TAA. In such a dark game with "broken" black level Deband option should also help greatly, reducing banding. Though I don't really get why games don't offer native sharpening slider if they offer TAA option, and especially if TAA is the only usable AA like in this case. TAA blurriness is an obvious issue that doesn't need a lot to compensate, don't know why it is never addressed.
10000% agree. TAA plus sharpening, as of today, is one of the best antialiasing methods out there as far as image quality and performance go. SMAA is just too ugly.
Alex's optimized settings: (18:10 mark) DirectX: 11 Volumetric Lighting: Medium Shadow Cache: On Shadow Quality: High Ambient Occlusion: SSAO Interlacing: Off (native) Anti-aliasing: TFXA+TAA Contact Shadows: On Screen-Space Reflections: On Motion Blur/Bloom/DoF: Big perf impact, but keeps On ------ Still making sense of these settings ------- Mesh Quality: Max (Console is 'high') Texture Quality: High, adjust 'cache' if you sense stuttering
Thanks Alex, I r quickly come to love all your work at DF. Glad you are on the team and take the trouble to go through games like this. Solid stuff, thank you.
the brightness settings !!! it's not normal if blacks are grey and with are bland. put the slider completely to the right for the white setting and to the left for the black for exploit 100% of the contrast
Correct. The default brightness of the game is just...wrong. its washed out/greyish. Areas that should be deep black, aren't. I have a perfectly calibrated TV and never need to adjust brightness ingame. But in this game its mandatory. As you said, first two sliders to lowest/highest and then you have the full brightness spectrum thats accurate.
@@Reckez and instructions are wrong, it's not "adjust value until the pattern is just barely visible" but rather "adjust the value until the pattern is invisible"
This engine is so good. Especially at 1080p, everything at max and getting a constant 140-150. Personally with very little stutter or drops at all. Super satisfied with the game and its performance. For someone to just get in and play it just runs great. I am super stoked with what future games they can make with this engine. Seriously a Re3/Re4/Dino Crisis remake with this engine will just keep printing money for Capcom.
To think some people dislike Alex just because he isn't too crazy about "Ultra" settings. Those are the kind of kids who always ask "is there an Ultra setting?" not even knowing what they actually do.
Stingy McDuck Well it’s stupid because ultra settings are better PERIOD. You don’t need to get all mad about it and call us kids just because you don’t agree with it.
Thank you for the settings list toward the end. I was watching it taking mental notes before you dropped that fresh screenshot on me. Saved me the time.
You can fix it in your computers settings by changing up brightness/contrast with some configuration from the Nvidia driver. I'm on an IPS panel (know for week blacks) and it looks great with my settings.
It's not an issue, it's the way the developer intended it to be, having it jet black would create no atmosphere, turn the lights off in your room your eyes adjust and you don't see jet black.
Try adjusting the brightness settings beyond what the game tells you is supposedly correct, it's clearly not. At least with HDR off you can get perfectly good contrast just by keeping the black and white sliders maxed and adjusting the last slider a bit darker. Maybe HDR adjustment is different though IDK, but the point is the in game calibration tips are straight up incorrect.
Very nice analysis, Alex. I found that I can play the game completely maxed out at 1440P with 130% scaling on a 1080 Ti and maintain 60+ FPS almost throughout the whole game. The game did, at one point, use 10GB of Vram. Did you try putting the game at 4K and using 200% scaling just for fun? Maybe mess with the graphics settings a bit and lock it at 30 FPS if at all possible. Side note: My 1080 Ti is running at 2 GHz core and 12 GHz memory
@@HamsterXFiles No. I used TAA + FXAA. Alex is right in the video about the aliasing that SMAA causes. It was very noticable in the "hallway of death" where the flaws became amplified. TAA + FXAA solved the issue.
Hostile Yea the Aliasing and shimmering is crazy on SMAA but it's sharp on the specular highlights and edges and detail on Leon's outfit. Just look at the detail on Leon's straps and stuff when using SMAA vs FXAA or TAA.
Bravo, Alex! This is just what we need for PC games - a list of settings ordered by the most computationally expensive so that we can work through each one as necessary to ge5 the frames we need whilst balancing quality.
Why DF....why do you not mentioned "Color Space: sRGB or BT.709". The XboX one X is much dark (natural black) than PC! Because sRGB is the default setting on PC, but when set to bt.709....we get a nice black level (like a xbox one x)
I've been wondering the same. It fixed the visual disparity between the PC demo and PS4 demo I had and once the full game launched, I went to turn on that shit ASAP
@@luke6514 Yeah, you do want to calibrate the in-game brightness settings and ideally your display's color and brightness settings to get ideal results, along with checking if your display settings on computer side are on limited or full HDMI black levels. Also display type also matters and oof doggy I'm already writing a lot but basically PC port has matching color 'n brightness / black levels as console ones do, usually it's just matter of in-game having srgb profile and display using limited hdmi black levels and/or otherwise being oddly calibrated.
I think the Xbox Xbox one X version could easy do 4K if the developer update it again. Because of the PS pro doing 1600p the Xbox one X will easy do 4k
Concerning the option to increase texture memory usage. It will make swapping assets harder and sometimes, when you travel from area to area the game will just freeze for like one second or even more so textures are loaded when you set the texture option too high. And resolution does increase but you won't notice past a threshold and the impact on framerate itself is very minor. But, yeah, there is a cache that tends to try to store more textures like he said.

@@k20a2toofast4u PS4 doesn't really look sharp, its only that the Anti-Aliasing is bad on PS4 pro, which makes many edges flicker, while on Xbox One X it's a little more aggressive and softens the image. Still, Xbox One X has less performance dips, so it clearly wins over the PS4 Pro version.
@@retropolis1 why are you repeating what john said.. its still sharper regardless what is happening. Both are averaging 58/59 frames respectively. So 1 frame dips here and there highly doesnt constitute as better performance. Frame dips during cut scenes though, ouch something is happening there that needs fixing.
@@k20a2toofast4u The Pro is NOT matching the X at all on on frame rate - the odd dropped frame or two that is quickly resolved compared to 'Big' drops that take a lot longer to recover, occur a LOT more often is NOT parity. The 'best' console to play on for the smoothest performance is the X by a noticeable margin. It doesn't drop during most combat sequences - unlike the Pro. Visually, the Pro is not running the same Anti-aliasing and, as this breakdown shows, the X is running the 'recommended' anti-aliasing (FXAA+TAA) to eliminate the shimmer and flicker on edges. The Pro runs at a lower level of Anti-aliasing and so suffers from shimmer - as well as lower performance metrics. The Screen space reflections are worse too - not that they are great on any platform but certainly worse than the X. Not only is it having to make more compromise on the visual settings, its also not running as smoothly either. I own a PS4 Pro myself but I am not a idiotic fanboy who is pathetically trying to insinuate that a 'weaker' system is somehow performing better than a system that is superior in hardware - having a whole PS4 more processing power (PS4 + PS4 Pro = X GPU), over 65% more RAM and that RAM is 50% faster as well as having a faster CPU too. That is just fact!!! It doesn't matter that the X is 'better' - it cost more and is a year newer so you expect it to have more. Its like saying an RX480 is outperforming a GTX1080ti just because you own an RX480... Ridiculous!!! Grow up and just enjoy the games at whatever level you get to play them on. If its not 'good' enough performance and visual quality for you, buy an X or higher spec PC and keep your Pro for the 'exclusives' as that is providing the 'best' visuals and/or performance on exclusive games - every other game will look and/or play better on X and PC because they have the better hardware - FACT!!!
Ikr. But the problem is Microsoft and nvidia pushing faulty dx 12. We need to express our opinions in the forums. This should had vulkan and it could be a good competitor of idtech engine (that it holds the actual crown of optimization, using vulkan api to achieve it)
Is important that devs start using Vulkan because that open a door of the user choose on what OS you want to play the game (something that is on the spirit of PC, choose how you want to play a game or do with them).
@The ZGX no one made a properly optimized dx12 game yet. Emulators devs already said it has a lot of problems compared to vulkan, it's not consistent enough. Vulkan on the other hand already showed numerous impressive feats, top biggest being doom (2016) and the new wolfenstein. Also vulkan is multiplataform, dx 12 is w10 only. Devs are only implementing dx12 cause Microsoft pushes it behind the ropes together with ngredia that has bad async gain, but since the gain of amd is higher on vulkan compared to dx 12 they prefer to push dx12 so they don't lose money. As a consumer you all should push for the best performance for your money and that's Vulkan. (Also as I said it works by default on Linux using proton on steam and also on other hardware.)
This was a great comparison. You even saw 1620p on Pc. This should have you do in Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Pc with Xbox One X resolution. So the X runs better the game like the RX 580 or GTX 1060.
Ha a pc fanboy. It runs on 1620p, on the X and outperform the rx 580, doesnt matter what resolution it has, it looks like on pc. And on X exist no chekeboarding, thats the technic of Ps. And on Pc it has 60fps on 1440p, much lower then on console, so it runs anyway better on X, doesnt matter what res it has.
@@Boophpoi on Xbox there is no checkerboarding? Funny man, this is not native also run better? How is 60fps better than 60fps? Come back when you know what you talk about, or how to spell.

Same, DOF off in all games, tanks framerate to blur the image? No thanks! Bloom depends on the game and what it provides for immersion. Motiom blur off in most things. RE2 is one of those rare titles where it's done right and isn't overblown. I barely even notice it's there; exactly how it should be. To any devs out there...if you can see it it's too much.
gotta pay attention they clearly mentioned the 580 is closer to 60fps at 1620p NATIVELY without the reconstruction techniques used in the consoles which is 1620p (with reconstruction to reach the resolution) ..
I'm not really sure if there is reconstruction as the image takes 0 frames to be shown properly on X. Every cut on Pro takes longer to be resolved fully.
I'm playing this game on 1440p high settings on a 1080 ti and I get 100+ FPS most of the time. I had graphics settings that gave me a warning about memory usage, and even though the estimated memory use wasn't even above my VRAM, I encountered freezes while playing. Usually when I would throw a flash grenade or something, the entire game would freeze for 1-2 seconds. Adjusting the texture quality a bit lower so the warning went away made this problem disappear.

Excellent settings analysis video Alex (as always).
I love these kind of videos from you guys. Its very informative on what the settings do and helps choose the best settings.
Or you can set up your own reshade profile it's not that hard
I'm playing max settings in sRGB on asus 3440x1440 monitor in sRGB image mode. I thought the same but it's simply not true. If you calibrate the brightness settings correctly it's not
washed out at all.
What are you talking abput, the colors look better on PC.. Also PC version supports HDR, while consoles dont it seems.
@@pcgameboy8407 The consoles also support HDR.
I wish you did videos like these for all (well all new popular) games. Really well done!

Correct. The default brightness of the game is just...wrong. its washed out/greyish. Areas that should be deep black, aren't. Thank you for the settings list toward the end. I was watching it taking mental notes before you dropped that fresh screenshot on me. Saved me the time.
I play on PS4 with HDR on an LG OLED and was super disappointed with how grey the blacks were. Thought it might be fixed on PC but apparently not.
You can fix it in your computers settings by changing up brightness/contrast with some configuration from the Nvidia driver. I'm on an IPS panel (know for week blacks) and it looks great with my settings.
How can blacks appear as gray with an OLED? You sure you are using the correct settings?
It's not an issue, it's the way the developer intended it to be, having it jet black would create no atmosphere, turn the lights off in your room your eyes adjust and you don't see jet black.
hopsuu Probably not, I play on OLED and after the initial brightness settings the black is crisp and deep. Don't know what that guy is talking about.
Thank you very much for the tip on using DX11 instead of DX12 for the PC. I had no idea.

Maybe mess with the graphics settings a bit and lock it at 30 FPS if at all possible.

I'm almost certain switching to by.709 is crushing the blacks , well at least for me anyways .

If its not 'good' enough performance and visual quality for you, buy an X or higher spec PC and keep your Pro for the 'exclusives' as that is providing the 'best' visuals and/or performance on exclusive games - every other game will look and/or play better on X and PC because they have the better hardware - FACT!!!

dx12 causes fps dips NO WAAAAAY
it's almost like this thing called the vulkan api exist for a reason

The game looks so washed out if you leave the color space to sRGB instead of changing in to 709. Dropping min brightness to the lowest setting and moving max brightness to the highest also helps a lot.
