What if you want a custom sound?
They must have changed something recently because there is no where and the messaging app to let you change the text tone
Settings > Notifications > Advanced Settings > Turn on Manage Notification Categories For Each App. Then back out and go to Setting > Apps > select the App (messages) > Notifications > Notification Categories > incoming messages > sound > then just change the sound to whatever you want.

Can you not change the sound for individual messages?
Looks like samsung removed that option.
You can, you open the contact you want to change the text tone for, click the 3 dots, then notification sound.

Thanks for this video. This used to be a 2 click "program" in my old phone. Now they bury it deep. Now off to find how to only have certain apps/Text/messages notify until I acknowledge. I do not need my phone to continually notify for a weekly report, etc....

How do I turn all my apps sound back to its default sound? Since I transfer my s20 to my new s23 via smart switch all my messages from different app sound the same. I tried to delete and reinstall but to no avail.

Under my incoming messages there is NO the word sound to select a sound for my texts! S23
After notification categories selected you may click on new messages then select sounds. It's a different way but still works!

It is now April 2024 and the new update took away these options... now my text tone is stuck on a easter text tone. Can you update this video.

Im using the same messages app. When i get into notifications and scroll down it only says “ configure in messages”. Mine does not say “ notification catergories”.

Then wanted to change the text tone but can’t, maybe something to do with the upte possibly. Still can’t change it.
Sam's issue here. Perhaps they updated it or something because the same notifications that have for everything else on the phone is the only option I have here. And it's not even an option, it's just the sound and that's it. No option to change it. I just switched over to try out Google messages but this one feature is the main reason it's unusable for me. You are able to change the notification sound for individual people but only if they also have an android. I can't change the message color or background and notification for anyone on my list that has an iPhone or a landline.

There is no "home" button any longer on the Galaxy S23!
once again I ve spoke to samsung messanger area wasted time everytime after I deleete the tone disapears samsung stated there s no fix for that issue that sucks...

same thing happened to me, I think they updated something and on my galaxy s24 it does not appear.
Hey I found the solution, for notifications category to show up you first have to go to your phone settings, then notifications, then choose advanced settings, then scroll down and turn on the Manage notification categories for each app, then when you go back to the google messages app you can follow the steps in this video and it will work. I hope this helped you out.

go to your regular settings type in notification categories and turn it on for each app that's what I just had to do for it to show up again
