I have never seen that before. And it is amazing. In the Hail, Hail Rock And Roll movie, he does a little r&b ballad all by himself called Cottage For Sale. Also, at the very end he's playing the lap steel guitar in his house, just him, and it's as profound as this poem and Cottage For Sale. He was not a perfect man but he was a deep and cultured one. R.I.P. Chuck Berry.
He always knew exactly the right way to say what he meant. I am humbled by the magnitude of what he created and I will always be profoundly grateful for his work.
Dear ol' Chuck, Now old "n" Grey. You too auld skin will pass away. Now till then sure what else can i say, only your Rock "n" Roll in our Hearts will stay.
Anybody can tell me what is that word, at the beginning of this line in the verse about that king's wife "... on their marriage bed" (third verse, line 3)
And now they are in the heavens with Janis, Jimi , Jeff, John, George, Gordon, Curt, Jim M. jamming away...play on play on..May they all rest in peace 🙏 !!!!
"So what's fame?" When a king bow down humbly looking back at its legacy. This very simple duo is a pure piece of music. nothing more need to be added, to be said.
This was really something, wow... you can tell they enjoy playing this simple song by their own, just as much as playing fast and loud with a big band...
Hail Hail Rock 'n' Roll is a superb DVD. Just the film it's self stands as a classic! If you add the suberb extras then you have the best Rock 'n' Roll film ever made.
Thanks for uploading this. Chuck has a wonderful speaking voice. I remember on the 4 dvd set there was another poem that Chuck recites for Robbie - something about a house that he's going to build one day. Not to be greedy, but I don't suppose there's any chance you might have that one too. It's gem right along with this one.
After Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977, the African American newspaper, the Chicago Defender explained that: “When Elvis Presley breathed his last breath and the press hailed him as the ‘King of Rock,’ Ol’ Man River cried out, ‘Naw he ain’t! My friend Chuck Berry is the King of Rock. Presley was merely a Prince who profited from the royal talent of a sovereign ruler vested with tremendous creativity. Had Berry been white, he could have rightly taken [Presley’s] throne and worn his crown well.’”

No material things can be taken to Heaven be a good being help your fellow Man don't let anyone suffer upon your gaze, Help if help can be given but sometimes even a kind “How are you” means more than most would know, it takes intellect and years of living in this world to grasp what true wisdom is, it's far more then grammar and numbers, knowing how to treat your fellow beings who feel, suffer and bleed in this world just like you and me to understand those as you would want to be understood and to be treated that way always treat People as you would want to be treated and never judge a book by its cover some people look mean but are the kindest people you will ever meet. Take these words from me they might not mean much to you now especially if your young but there will come a time when you will understand.
Lincoln used that quote, too: "It is said that a great Eastern monarch once commanded the wisest in his kingdom to compose for him a sentence, to be ever in view, that would be true in all times and all situations. The sentence they composed for him read: "And this, too, shall pass away.'"
How does he remember all the words to this poem? It must be one of his favorites. I can remember every word to long Dylan songs but not to poetry. Granted, I do not read much poetry.
As Chuck said, it's all about diction. That it what distinguished him from the other Rockers. Ironically if Elvis sounded black, Chuck sounded white! There's a beautiful blues arrangement of this on the Rock It album. Here the arrangement is more jazzy or even classical. And the lyrics are in different, less logical, order, for some reason. It's really quite good. But I'm puzzled by the phrase, "mine or main." It doesn't make sense.
Well, it seems like we both helped each other. I'm too lazy to check the song again. But it seems "mine" refers not to the possession but to the mine, as in gold mine or diamond mine! And "main" would then refer, by contrast, to the sea (hence to treasures in the sea vs. treasures in a mine).
.....and then she peed on him LOL sorry...I HAD to. Love you Sir Chuckleton .... may u 4 ever rock. You sir are da king of rocknroll !! Roll on...rock 4 ever sir Chuckles!
Taylor Hackford is a fool for leaving this bit out of the final Hail Hail cut.
Man what a shame this didn’t make it into the film!

"what is wealth the king would say... even this will pass away."
One of the greatest moments in the history of rock music !!
May I express my admiration for whomever it was that did the lighting for this set?
This was the last song on the last studio album released to date by Chuck Berry, ROCKIT (1979):
BOTH of them now gone. #RIP - ALL this too shall pass away.
brilliant -
how this whole poem was not added to the documentary I don't understand - yet they had some strange cartoon situation.
Why this isn't more well known, I've got no idea... So outstanding... Now we've lost both of them...

What can I say? ~ Excellent feeling ~ This performance will never die.
Between these two men, they wrote the soundtrack to the 'American Experiment' - for better or worse.
Salute!

Why are some of the old comments at the top of the list? Doesn't anyone sort them? Strange....
How does he remember all the words to this poem?
It must be one of his favorites. I can remember every word to long Dylan songs but not to poetry. Granted, I do not read much poetry.
He seems that he reads something when he lower his head, that dont reduce the beauty of his declamation and of the poem.
Which church ?
Chuch did.
