  • At the Paris Olympics, the staging of swimming competitions in the Seine River is currently in jeopardy. Following the cancellation of the first swimming trainings for triathletes in the river, experts are questioning whether the planned events can even take place there.
Tests conducted on Saturday revealed that the water quality of the Seine does not meet the standards required by the International Triathlon Union. The primary cause of the poor water quality is the heavy rainfall of recent days, which led to pollution of the river. The health of athletes is the top priority, so all competitions must be conducted under safe conditions.
In recent years, approximately €1.4 billion has been invested in upgrading sewage treatment facilities and the wastewater system in the Paris metropolitan area to improve the Seine’s water quality. Despite these extensive measures, the planned swimming events are now at risk, posing a significant challenge for organizers and athletes. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether and how the competitions can be held.
