Hey Mike, long time watcher here, and I just want to say that this review was, I think, as refreshing to me as this new series was for you. I love all the read alongs and how vocal of an advocate you are for the books and series that you love, but watching you going in blind and giving your audience a well structured recommendation just felt, well, new. I hate to dredge up meta-channel commentary, but I know it's been said that you are taking a more conservative pace and approach with the channel, but, to me, this review was a highlight for what I love about your channel: Just a chill guy giving good recommendations on pretty damn good books. It's what i love about this place. Thanks for everything! I'll be using your link to snag a copy!
It must be an amazing book for you to read it without the trilogy being complete. Added it to my tbr. Thank you Mike! Your channel is amazing as always.
Been looking forward to this book for a while now and was excited to hear what you had to say! Super glad that you liked it and I'll be picking it up on release. Going to try to get through it before the TGAT read along begins. Thanks, Mike!
I pre-ordered this, but I'm going to wait till March to read this for March Mystery Madness. Once again, you and Allen continue to wreak havoc on my TBR
I received an arc from Orbit too and loved it! I thought it was such a quick read and fast paced. Very unique read, I loved that it was different from the normal fantasy books. I’m ready for book 2! Lol
This seems so interesting and refreshing, I hope I'll get to it soon. My hardcover copy actually got delayed by 3 weeks. Anyway, thanks for the in depth review! Edit: definitely agree with buying the first book, I've bought a couple of debuts and sequels that I haven't gotten to yet (Brian Lee Durfee's trilogy for example)
Love your channel, keep up the awesome work. I had preordered this and it was waiting at home for me this afternoon, after work. Really looking forward to this one. Thank you !!!!!
Great review! I read an earc of this as well and enjoyed it! I think you hit the nail on the head - super impressive for a fantasy debut reads like a seasoned author for me; can't wait for the rest of the series!
Oh man, you've get me itching for this book. I love the Dresdin Files and Sherlock Holmes. Sadly, I'm a taking book library for the blind audio book reader, so I'll probably have to wait a year for it. You make it sound so awesome though!!!!
Just got a notification that my copy of this book has shipped. Gotta finish The Drawing of the Three tonight so that I can start Justice of Kings tomorrow.
I should receive this tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited! I'm a sucker for historical fiction so a fantasy in medieval setting is my shit! And of course I'm always down for a good mystery
I heard about this book from Petrik at the end of last year so it was already on my radar but after hearing your thoughts, I'm even more eager to give it a try.
Greetings!! I am very glad I picked this book up and yes I am reading it and it is very good and it is a page turner!! I am looking foreword to books 2 and 3 and by an author who is willing to finish his series---VERY, VERY happy about this series and may buy anything he, Richard Swan, is going to write.
Awesome video once again mike. You made me order another book! I love the spoiler free reviews to sell me to some new books, but i do miss the spoiler part at the end to go back to after reading a book.
As a fan of Christie (Poirot, Marple, Tommy & Tuppence, and the standalones), I still can't imagine preferring Christie over Doyle. But I guess that's why they make both chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I do think that a video on Christie/Doyle would be a fun one for the channel.
TBR added, except bookshelf space is at a premium right now due to a new home. The story sounds fun, but where do I slide it in when I just picked up Jade City, Empire of Silence, Empire of the Vampire, and Midnight Tides (trying in vain to catch the read-along). Time to strap up and do some serious reading so I can get to this one. Thanks for review!
Been subscribed for a while just don't watch a lot of videos unless I'm ready to read a new book and here I am watching you review I have the first two books of the series in my library just kind of wondering if there's enough action to keep me reading now don't get me wrong I enjoyed political Intrigue and betrayal but I love action scenes it don't have to be action packed I'm really wanting to like this book since I enjoy murder mystery / thrillers so a fantasy mystery by the way Kick-Ass shirt man keep representing
Part of me is upset at the publishing company for using your platform to sell books and not sending you the physical copy... feels kind of cheap to me but at the same time the author shouldn't be punished for it. Sounds interesting though, great review.
I was lucky enough to win a giveaway on Goodreads for an ebook pre-release. I LOVED it so much! I won't spoil but I want one of the abilities to spy that a character has in this book... You're right that going into it, with the premise, I thought it might drag through, but I was sucked in instantly. I read Shadow of the Gods right after this too and I had the best reading month. :D
Son of the Black Sword: Saga of the Forgotten Warrior, Book 1 By: Larry Correia...has anyone checked that one out. The main character couldn't stop ragging on and on about "the law" and not being above it. I didn't like it too much upon completing it with effort. I look forward to reading the Justice of Kings.
Mike, when you say it is like a "Medieval Mystery" work, are you talking about something akin to Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose (but in a fantasy setting)?
Good first book but not great. I probably made the mistake of reading Best Served Cold(brilliant) by Abercrombie just before giving JOK a try. Expecting the juicy dialogue and characters of an Abercrombie book was expecting too much I guess. Very different type of books. Will give the 2nd book a shot.
You were right Mike - you are being f*cked by UA-cam. You are my favourite book tuber and I watch all your videos, so I clicked the bell long ago but don't receive any notifications for new vids. So sorry for you!
I don't know. UA-cam is a mess, i got notifications from channels I've never clicked the bell on. I only check my subscription tab, that's why it's there, right
Yeah, something is definitely up. Thing is, a ton of similar channels are seeing the same things. So maybe UA-cam is just undergoing a massive change. Who knows?
Oh gosh I wish I had the same praise for this book as you did. I love mystery/fantasy books but the main protagonist and the framing device for the story just did not work for me. Still as 7.5/10 but not my cup of tea.
Mystery AND fantasy? Say no more. That's how I found Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and also the light and fun Dan Shamble, Zombie PI series by Kevin J. Anderson. Yet another TBR. Woot
Wow wonderful review, I would really appreciate if you reviewed a book called HOMO. Sapien James and the Renegade priest, it's written by an African author. It's really interesting.
Hi Mike, quite disappointed with this novel, too many contrivances, sluggish in the middle and the romantic element was poorly done. How many times can Helena cry in one book and falling in love in 2 mins wow. I just think there are too many better books out there also it isn't really a debut novel to be fair. An average read at best. Great channel Mike btw
It seems that the novel is not to your taste. Also, this novel does not focus on romance greatly, but rather focuses on first-degree crime investigations, similar to Sherlock Holmes stories, but in a medieval setting with some magical and supernatural elements. The second book of the series is considered the climax of the events.
Tbh, this book steals a lot from Eisenhorn by Dan Abnett. Vonvalt is Eisenhorn. Bressinger is Midas Betancore. The King's Voice is the Will. They interview a dead man in his subconscious before being interrupted by dark forces... It's very, very similar and I made the mistake of reading them at the same time so I can't unsee it.
So... just Sherlock Holmes, then? It has been a long time, but I remember all of the Sherlock novels and short stories being from Watson's perspective. :)
A fantasy version of Hercule Poirot? Sign me up! Thanks for another excellent review, Mike.
I'm intrigued as well!
Yeah, man. So unique in a genre that has started to feel similar in the modern landscape. I think you'll enjoy.
Yup, sold!
This was an awesome book. One of the best paced novels I have read! The pacing was so good I read this book faster than I have read anything else!
Quite true.
Once again Mike adds to my TBR. A mystery novel in a fantasy setting has me intrigued.
Happy to help!

You'll fly through it. Very quick read.
I pre-ordered this, but I'm going to wait till March to read this for March Mystery Madness. Once again, you and Allen continue to wreak havoc on my TBR
I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan, so a fantasy take on Poirot is right in my wheelhouse. Thanks for the review. Sold!
I received an arc from Orbit too and loved it! I thought it was such a quick read and fast paced. Very unique read, I loved that it was different from the normal fantasy books. I’m ready for book 2! Lol

Anyway, thanks for the in depth review!
Edit: definitely agree with buying the first book, I've bought a couple of debuts and sequels that I haven't gotten to yet (Brian Lee Durfee's trilogy for example)
I read an e-arc and it’s my favourite book of the year so far, for all the reasons you mention.
Quite the surprise, for sure.
I picked this one up today based on your review of this. Looking forward to it!
This review pushed me over the edge and I just ordered the book
Love your channel, keep up the awesome work. I had preordered this and it was waiting at home for me this afternoon, after work. Really looking forward to this one. Thank you !!!!!
Yeah!!!! Mike!! This book just arrived in the mail and I'm reading it today!! I looovvvve the cover!! I would buy a poster and plant it on my wall.
Love your shirt man! My favorite record!🤘🏻
Great review! I read an earc of this as well and enjoyed it! I think you hit the nail on the head - super impressive for a fantasy debut reads like a seasoned author for me; can't wait for the rest of the series!
Already one of my most anticipated releases for next year.
This video brings me joy Mike!
Great review Mike, you got me so excited to read this novel book. Will Definitely order it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Can't wait to get my copy tomorrow!!
Hootie!! Oh yeah!
You'll zip through this one. So fast-paced.
i already bought one from the broken binding so excited! love your reviews mike
Thank you! Hope you like it.
Another great review. I was thinking about purchasing this but now after your review it's a definite purchase.
An excellent decision.
Thanks for the video, Mike!!
"The Hooty and the Blowfish of debut novels!" Hahaha! Loved this review and have high hopes for loving the book!
Oh man, you've get me itching for this book. I love the Dresdin Files and Sherlock Holmes. Sadly, I'm a taking book library for the blind audio book reader, so I'll probably have to wait a year for it. You make it sound so awesome though!!!!
A lot of people seem to love this book, definitely going to pick it up when I get the chance. Quality video as always 🤟🤟
The reception has been quite positive.
had added this to my TBR last time you mentioned it. after watching this review I've decided to buy the hardcover. looking forward to starting it!
Just got a notification that my copy of this book has shipped. Gotta finish The Drawing of the Three tonight so that I can start Justice of Kings tomorrow.
I ordered kindle and hardcover, can’t wait to read it
I hope you dig it!
Definitely going to read this!
I should receive this tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited! I'm a sucker for historical fiction so a fantasy in medieval setting is my shit! And of course I'm always down for a good mystery
Sounds like you'll be pleased.
I heard about this book from Petrik at the end of last year so it was already on my radar but after hearing your thoughts, I'm even more eager to give it a try.
Comment for the algorithm -- sounds good, Mike!
Gracias!
When Mike says buy something I buy it. Got it pre-ordered. Sounds like a good read. I loved this spoilers free review. You keep it real!
Hope you enjoy it!
I have high hopes for this one. I'm probably gonna like it if you did. You're the reason I read the Red Rising books and I loved those.
Great! Hope you like it.
Yeah, Allen was praising this book. It sounds great.
Allen is correct.
Greetings!! I am very glad I picked this book up and yes I am reading it and it is very good and it is a page turner!! I am looking foreword to books 2 and 3 and by an author who is willing to finish his series---VERY, VERY happy about this series and may buy anything he, Richard Swan, is going to write.
As a lawyer who enjoys reading fantasy, this is right up my alley!
Sold. Take my money.
Awesome video once again mike. You made me order another book!
I love the spoiler free reviews to sell me to some new books, but i do miss the spoiler part at the end to go back to after reading a book.
Cool . . . I think I will schedule it for sometime next month.
Excellent book. Gonna Read the sequel very soon.
That sound really cool.
Very much.
Great review Mike! I’m definitely gonna give it a read.
So you prefer Agatha Christie over Sir Conan Doyle? Interesting! You should do a video on why.
Nothing against Holmes, I just read 2 of his in high school and 2 of Poirot and enjoyed them much more.
Will have to check this out 🙂 thanks…!

I’ll give it a try.
Gotta finish poppy war trilogy, mistborn reread, and greatcoats. After that I'm either gonna read this or Age of Ash.
Hmmm. At first you had my curiosity. Now, you have my attention.
Mike: ...Poirot
Me:... I'm sooo in!
I do love me a mystery
You'll likely dig it.
Just finished. It was very good. Had a couple nitpicks but they did not detract from my enjoyment.
FYI, the Amazon link above is for the paperback edition which doesn't release unitl August.
Well, yeah so? Pre-order
@@Iza56 the book releases tomorrow
Fixed! Thanks.
Slapping this on top of the neverending stack
You'll dig it!

I pre-ordered this one, and I can't wait for it to come in! I'm trying to squeeze in The Blade Itself before it gets here though, haha!
Sounds like you have some greats reads going on.
I'm very interested in a video by you on Agatha Christie. She is one of my favorite authors; although, there are a few duds in her bibliography.
Part of me is upset at the publishing company for using your platform to sell books and not sending you the physical copy... feels kind of cheap to me but at the same time the author shouldn't be punished for it. Sounds interesting though, great review.
Could you do a video where you compare Doyle and Christie? Cozies are my favorite genre.
I was lucky enough to win a giveaway on Goodreads for an ebook pre-release. I LOVED it so much! I won't spoil but I want one of the abilities to spy that a character has in this book...

YES!!! Mike is back…..Wee could have done this at the Bearded Fox!!! Sick Metallica shirt
First round is on you.
You had me at Poirot
Ha ha enjoy
sounds good

Son of the Black Sword: Saga of the Forgotten Warrior, Book 1

You can tell a book is good when even the part about the bad involves praising the dialogue, and comparing it to Dresden

Above the Law? Is that Steven Seagal on the cover?
Mystery in fantasy??? You just sold me this book. Gonna skip some places in my tbr, too.
I'd recommend moving it up, for sure.
Mystery AND fantasy? Say no more. That's how I found Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and also the light and fun Dan Shamble, Zombie PI series by Kevin J. Anderson.
Yet another TBR. Woot
Sounds sorta like Gayle Greeno's Seekers Veritas Trilogy
Wow wonderful review, I would really appreciate if you reviewed a book called HOMO. Sapien James and the Renegade priest, it's written by an African author. It's really interesting.

Sounds a bit like Sherlock Holmes being told from Watson’s perspective?
Sure! I've just read more Poirot than Holmes, so that's always my fallback.
So... just Sherlock Holmes, then?
It has been a long time, but I remember all of the Sherlock novels and short stories being from Watson's perspective. :)
