We almost decided to not even launch this day because it was dumping rain at the launch in the pre dawn hours. Luckily, there was a brief gap in the weather so we quickly unloaded the yaks and dashed out to the grounds. Live opelu are incredibly hard to catch this time of year because they are breeding and under constant attack by pelagic predators, so I was super stoked to catch one bait right at sunrise. After an hour or so with my single live opelu out on the line,
I finally found some fish and managed to hook a shibi ahi (yellowfin tuna). It seemed like that would be all the action for the day because I was unlikely to find more live bait, so I threw a dead opelu out and started heading in. Not long after, I came across a huge bait ball too tempting to pass up, so I dropped my sabiki rig through the pile and was actually able to hook another opelu.
Soon after sending out the fresh live bait, the fish of a lifetime decided to stop by for a bite...

This is why I watch your channel. That was an awesome catch! It had a fat belly! When we catch Salmon that big in Lake Michigan (Off the shores of Chicago) they're usually female and full of spawn. Then we cure the spawn in sacks and use them as bait. Wow, what a nice fish! Congrats man! That will be enough fish for dinner for quite some time!!!!!

@@AffordableWahoo have you ever looked into Penn 30-40 2 speed. I’ve bought a few of them lately to fish San Diego Bluefin and think they would fit your needs on the yak. Pretty reasonable prices too. 🤙🏻

@@JoeDogoutdoors I was looking into a Penn Fathom for a bit then decided to go with the Avet MXL 2 speed instead because I got a deal from a friend. It has handled 50-70 lb Yellowfins easily so far but I wonder how it'll do against a 100+. I do like running the spinners because I can cast easily with them but it sucks hooking big tunas on them!!

If its not to much to ask, whats you base settings on your striker 4. I have the same fish finder i bought new about a year ago and didnt really get it setup well enough to use it. Ive been fishing blind ever since lol. Any help much appreciated!
@@davidglipa7020 I have the gain on maximum and auto range depth. Split screen traditional sonar + waypoints so I can follow my tracks and points.

I did have one question about your technique though... I see that you often hold your rod why trolling instead of putting it in a rod holder behind you. Why is that? Do you do that to detect bites and/or slow down when they occur?

It does help to hold the rod in hand while drifting / slow trolling live bait to react as quickly as possible. It also feels really good to have the rod in hand when the fish strikes!

Absolute monstrous beast of a thing! Well done on a superb fun hard catch!! Loved the fight and thank god you’d brained it by the time you had that gaping jaw near your chest and throat … what a happy paddle home that would have been!! Great stuff mate and you’re so lucky to have such productive waters so close to you. We have to drive 5+ hours to get to good yakking waters like that this time of year (our winter down in Western Australia) or a decent powered boat! What a great feed too. (An islander question for you: Did you get to enjoy the head too?)

I thought I had it bad with my 5 hour round trip to one of the further spots here! Sometimes my friend makes soup out of the head but whenever I try it I get a stomach ache so I must be doing something wrong...

I think it took just a little over 30 minutes. Not nearly as hard as a shibi of the same size bit still crazy fight for an ono!
Nice one! How much did it weigh? Years ago, my friend Reggie Pare, caught a 56# ono that was on the cover of Hawaii Fishing News. I found that mounting the ama kit right behind the seat, as Hobie suggests, makes it very difficult when you have to paddle -- only short choppy strokes because the iako are in the way. I installed a second mounting kit farther back so that I have two options for locating the iako.
Thanks man! Came in at 73 lbs doing the old "hold the fish and step on the bathroom scale" method. I just looked up that HFN cover and wow he got a great picture of his fish! My partner and I got separated this day so I was pretty much fishing solo lol. I like your idea of having options for the AMAs. I gonna just redesign my rod holders so I can access my tank well better and actually use my pedals I think...
Off topic but, where you fish, is it near the active volcano? I see on the news here that it's erupting again.
The eruption is something like 25 miles from where I fish. Sometimes closer depending on what spot I go. Youd never guess it was going on though.
