How Much Did My 2.5 Swap Cost? $$$$
Вставка

- I don't like to share prices of overall projects, and I think cars are overall a waste of money - but hobbies are more than just spending. Some of you were asking for a break down of parts, cost, etc. So here it is. To do the 2.5 duratec swap in the NC Miata, it was a little more than I expected but also not too surprising.

Don't look at money spent for fun as a waste. Just because it's not an investment, doesn't make it a waste.
Exactly, especially if it's a hobby. We're supposed to love our hobbies - enjoying them shouldn't ever be seen as a waste of money. As long as your priorities are taken care of, there's no sweat there.
Just remember the more you save/invest, the more capable you will be to make these purchases in the future without compromising other responsibilities in life
Yes, you were totally right to spend the 4k on a fresh engine instead of a supercharger on a 100k Mike engine. My 2012 still has way too few miles to consider a swap but if life or kids makes me buy a bigger daily driver I'd consider one day selling my car and buying the cheapest clean NC1 body I could find and have a 2.5 installed in an older car
Cost less then I thought it would. Just spent the last hour catching up with this build. Seriously thinking about going NC. Currently have an NA
Thanks for checking out the series!
I just installed my 2.5 engine yesterday and fired it up on the first crank. Still need to install the Trans and the cooling components, but I'm just about done.
I appreciate that you are a real straight-shooter,no B.S..Cars are unfortunately a necessity if you do not live in a major city. Hobby cars can really get out of hand expense wise. You take a more practical approach by doing the labor yourself and not going berserk with the spending. These guys who question what you do with your Miata should keep there opinions to themselves. To each his own,as they say.
The engine was only $245?? That seems crazy cheap
Yea ive been looking, no ford fusion 2.5l in the uk but a 2.5 from a mondeo is going to set me back 1.5k with 80k+ miles no clue where hes getting these deals
Thanks for putting this together. looking forward to when i can do this as well. Thanks for all that you do for the NC miata community.
this does make me feel really good about buying a nc with a freshly-installed 2.5 for 6k tho :)
Good shit bro
I’m actually in the same boat.
How many miles on it? That's a steal.
(how many miles on the car, not the engine)
As others have said. Money well spent
Great 2.5 nc series. I decided to do the swap too and I found your videos to have been helpful. We ended up finishing around the same time. So many disasters along the way though. But man that first startup made it worth it. And doing wot pulls running through the gears has never felt better, especially after 4k rpm, it really comes alive.
Yeah i calculated it out and i spent close to $6k on my NA cammed, big header, 1 goal intake swap... it hurt to add up lol
You: 110k = No turbo!
Me: sitting here with my freshly turbocharged NA6 at 216k 😎
Great video and cool car!
That's actually not too bad for cost. The tools and tuning hardware can be reused which is an investment, and everything you've learnt by doing this yourself are skills that you will continue to use and hone. Like any kind of education, money will be spent. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment you get completing this with your own hands.
Thanks for all the info. I installed a V8 in my last car which was a 1980 MGB. I think this would be a little over my head. Physically I am in no shape to actually do an install. If I was a bit younger I think I would try it. Love your realistic attitude about money and being a hobby. I totally lost my butt when I sold that car but I always knew I would. However, it was fun and satisfying! The guy I sold it to takes it to car shows. The cost breakdown was very helpful. Since I can't do the work myself I am going to SC it. I have an 09, the same color as yours. I've already done a bunch of upgrades. As long as you post, I will watch!
Appreciate the video, I'm doing a similar build that's probably going to hit right about $4600 but I'm including tools that I bought for the build, things like the $80 I spent to rent a truck to pick up my engine, and throwing a friend some cash for using his garage when I do the install.
People like to just look at base internet costs for performance stuff like turbo kits and swaps and don't realize the work and money that realistically goes into them. Yeah, there's no financial justification, it's 100% a hobby and I've enjoyed doing it during covid times. Somebody on the internet is always going to have that buddy who supposedly did an LS swap for $2k.
Thanks for the video. Just bought a really nice nc last week. Looking around for future options. You video was about $6k cheaper than a quote I got from a shop for them to do the swap. If I go the 2.5 route I think I would enjoy the project. Probably has something to do with why I’m calling it a project car. Mean while it’s a lot of to drive the way it is.🐣
Someone was going to charge 10,000 to do this? Jesus
For UK viewers - you need to double the price on everything. In the UK the 2.5 is not a common engine to find.
Interesting. Would it be cheaper to import a motor from the US?
@@mitchellsteindler it should be in the mondeo
@@kennethelliott5985mondeo engines are 6x more expensive
Making me feel much better on my plans, inspiring me to do the 2.0 AT to the 2.5 MT swap this winter.
I have very similar plans. How hard is this going to be to manual swap lmfao.
I've been looking at getting a miata and 2.5 swapping it so I love this! I also wanted to just keep it NA for a while and learn to drive some autocross stuff before getting more power. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Hope you find the perfect car for you!
This was actually a lot cheaper than I thought it would be. When I was looking at supercharger kits for my BRZ a few years ago and they were like 5k. I say you made out pretty well.
Definitely more than I thought but not enough to really be mad about it. I didnt track my spending but since so many were curious I made the cost breakdown!
Thanks so much for posting all of your nc videos. I’m an old guy who bought a Miata rather than a spitfire and have learned more from your videos than anywhere else. I’m focused on more of the cosmetics and interior upgrades, so I really appreciate those videos, although your 2.5 swap is exciting to watch too. Anyway, thumbs up always, sub from the get go, hope you’re enjoying your ride as much as I’m enjoying mine. Cheers!
I have enjoyed watching your 2.5 build series. I don't have any plans to do a 2.5 but a little at a time I am doing performance upgrades to my NC MK3.
Loved this series man. Watched almost all of it last night and today. If you’re local to DFW, which I’m assuming you are with the Texas plate and TDR frame cover you should bring it out to Keller’s on Wednesday nights. Would love to see the car. I just finished putting a 55k mile 1.8vvt into my 01 miata in July. Blew the car up in January when it was turbo’d and did all of the work my self. Was a blast to do and I learned so much about the car. Hope to meet you soon and keep up the great miata content!
Awesome thanks so much for watching! I've been out to kellers a couple time and will definitely be visiting again! Sounds like you had a fun project as well
I paid to have my swap done. Was it worth it? Hell yes
Price ?
@@thomasalcaraz5351 I don't know what he paid but I think install is quoted around 2k at goodwin. They also sell new engines for 3k. You also need a ecu reflash. So I would guess a rough estimate for a 2.5 swap and labor with no performance upgrades to the engine is around 6k probably give or take a grand based on various things
@@trevorhsu6357 that’s crazy, the engines on ebay are 400-1000, why are they charging that much?
@@ckbun a new engine is 3k. If you're going to spend 2-2.5k in labor for an installation do you really want to install a used eBay engine that was 400-1k? Then in total your pay something like 3.5k for a used 2.3 installed vs 5.5-6k for a new engine installed
Total here in Oz was $4k although $1k of that was a rolling road tune. You guys in the US are sooo lucky price wise
What about keeping it naturally aspirated and going with a BBR ITB kit?
I've certainly thought about it!
I want to see you do a track video and analysis. When it's all ready, it needs to hit the track and be pushed against other cars and then you'll get the satisfaction of your project.
Good god I wish I live in the us as in the uk that lot would cost pax 7k
Yea im in uk been researching it, no idea where he got a £200 engine from lmao, lowest i can find is 1.5k + i gotta think about insurance 😅😢
cool vid Jackson. I think its a decent price for the swap. i expected it to be more. always nice to watch your vids
It definitely could be more, depending on parts, etc. In no way am I complaining about the price either!
Have you noticed any (0-60, etc) numbers for the performance increase from the 2.0L to the 2.5L? Just curious what you have noticed with your build + the extra performance parts.
Its absolutely more powerful
My 2.5 was straight off 2 secs quicker round our local 60sec lap track. BIG difference in power
Got my 2.5 donor engine ordered, about $2000 in tools on the way. Can’t wait to get started!
Nice, good luck and have fun!
How did it go?
@@dielaughing73 been fantastic ever since the swap
@@acolossalsquid awesome. I am keeping my eye out for a motor but don't have any money to put into it just yet, busy doing basics of handling, braking, cooling, driver mod
thank you for the spreadsheet
No worries!
I just bought mine a month ago, i dont mind it going so slow thanks to so many CHP but im making a g a day where to begin
Thank you so much for posting
Wow. You can at least triple that amount if you want to pull off something like that that here in Germany... Thanks TÜV...
Let me know when you are going to be in August... would be nice to meet you and see your awesome ride
Hey, thanks for this video, I am in Australia and I am thinking about doing the 2.5 swap on my NC, but I am struggling a bit finding that duratec engine, I think there are some Mazda 6 that have this one but do you know how can I distinguish them? is there any marks or something?
I found youre videos looking for videos on the 2.5 im planning on buying a 2.5 to build and then buy a mazda 6 at somepoint to put it in. And im assuming cost of swap will be similar. Thank you for your videos.
Good luck!
For the wiring on the 2.5 swap, do you basically just use the 2.0 sensors with stock harness or do some need to be worked on?
The only thing I had to mess with with the vvt pigtail wiring.
hey man a refreshed N/a engine with some performance parts is better than an unreliable "TuRbOcHarGeD" engine
Wanting to go this. But most of the 2.5s around me are 500+. Was the 2.5 you got in bad shape at 245?
Nope it only had 40,000 miles. Took a chance with a junkyard motor
Will the 2.0 flywheel and clutch pack work with the 2.5? I have so many questions
Yes it will
Hi, i need a part number for accessories V belt (serpentine belt)
Thanks
Happiness is always a good investment.
Exactly, I think it's fair to say that the average car guy is all about smiles per gallon...
Hey I have questions about the motor mounting and trans as well if you have a sec!?
What about it
@@ColoredinLight does the stock 2.0 motor mounts fit up? And what about the transmission does it mount up right up to the 6 speed or does it need a adapter?
Trans and mounts fit fine
@@ColoredinLight that's not what I'm asking though, I'm asking if you had to have different motor mounts for that engine and if the transmission bolts right up to that motor or not.
@@israelcardona5170 that's what I'm saying. the transmission fits. the motor mounts fit.
facebook.com/groups/2006740659573188/permalink/2007435026170418/
Will the 2.5 and a supercharger fit under the hood?
Yep
@@ColoredinLight that would probably put me at about 260-280hp. I've heard that the stock Transmissions are good for 300 possibly 350 safely.
Yes get the cosworth supercharger, you might need to match the ports from the intake manifold to the huge cylinder head of the D25
Maybe it is good idk lol but living in the People's Republik of Kalifornicate One does not have the option of motor swaps on one's street car. Kinda forces one to stay very much towards stock on one's motor....If I lived elsewhere I'm pretty sure I would have started a huge money pit project likely involving an NC....but over and over any dreams are killed off knowing I will never get a smog certificate...damn it....I mean there are some nefarious ways one might accomplish such in this state for instance obtaining a mailing address in one of the county areas where routine smog tests are waved after the initial original one to register the vehicle then buying a stock motored example running well enough to pass that initial test and THEN go to work swapping the motor ...of course you have maintain that address as that is where your renewal registration and DMV notices will be mailed....so if you live hours drive from there what a hassle! The logistics gave me a headache as well as the uneasy criminal aspect of doing it....so I never did...Instead I bought a slow assed 2018 ND because the rods and Pistons can handle the CARB legal supercharger kit...that is real ly the only option I have...BTW last I checked the kit retails for $6k then either pay 1200 for install or go it alone and finally a tune ....the end result is just 15hp more than the 2019 ND and so hardly seems worthwhile as I mull it over eh? Maybe sell it and just pick up a '22 BRZ 228hp bone stock

I feel you man, I live in the Netherlands and thankfully the scum running this country haven't pushed it that far yet. Such a shame, California used to be such a nice place I really wanted to visit one day, but not anymore.
I own a Speed6 by the way, I love that thing so much!
It's a hobby. If you have your necessities taken care of, who cares?
What’s the wheel and tire set up?
Just got my swap done paid a little over 5k with dynotronics
They quoted me $2,500 out the door. I mean that was with a stock engine with a few miles on it, but still...
@@jdroofcleanpw ya same here but I added some other stuff to it and also got it it shipped to them from California
I know this was two years ago, but Dynotronics is getting ready to do a swap for my 2010 GT AT, I'm assuming you were pleased with the outcome? I'm doing the new engine instead of the used.
Would you do it again and what junkyard did you get your engine from?
I'd do it again sure
@@ColoredinLight what yard did you get the engine from? It looks like you're in dfw.
Can't remember the name since it was like 2 years ago.
we should have a dyno day..............................I would show up
how tall are you?
Get to the dyno and get it tuned....................and then rip it
also.. didn't you have a spoiler on the car?
Keen eye.
@@ColoredinLight holler if you want to sell it
@@ellisbe1 someone snagged it last week
@@ColoredinLight So you have started parting out the MX5 to fund your new VW already! Treachory.
jk..
No way! Lol they're definitely 2 different projects and goals, I just wanted to try something different with the mx5.
What is the hp on this built
Not sure yet
2.5's with a mild cam and exhaust will be between 180-190bhp so a 30hp-40hp increase from a 2.0 depending on rolling road figs.
2.5 what?
Let's ask Luke Mcgrew

Just sayin
