    At last a useful video about cracking of hydrocarbons. This is one I can use in my chemistry lessons at high school. It is better than any demstration I can do by myself.
    Thanks very much.

    Don't change anything! This is part of the UK's GCSE syllabus. Adding extra information will over complicate what is a succinct and informative demonstration. Well done!

      Oh, NOBOX, funny to randomly stumble on you here! It's a small world...
      (And the music is actually a piano cover of Dragonforce's "Through the Fire and the Flames", a speed metal song known for being played ridiculously fast. Just take a look at the original...)

    Amazing video! I knew of this process but was completely unaware it could be implemented with shattered flower pots or pumice! If gas prices keep going up there will be an underground movement of people cracking paraffin wax and Vaseline! LOL

      Kitty litter that your cat shits in is a zeolite and is used as a catalysts to convert plastics hope this helps.

      @@barsos1 dont think he will ever get the variety of hidrocarbons in crude oil but it might liquify and break the polymer with enought heat. or just make organic char, wichever comes first.

    Excelent! Which gases you have collected? If You use hydrocarbon there is just H and C, right? Hydrogen go to the collecting tubes, but Carbon stay in the reactor, like carbon deposits?

    • @Ace011mm
      @Ace011mm 10 років тому

      ***** Hm... Thank you, I donot know this. But how we can split it into its elements?

    • @Ace011mm
      @Ace011mm 10 років тому

      ***** Ok, I will. Thanks! Steam reforming can split hydrocarbons, right? But why use catalysator for hydrocarbon cracking, maybe this lowers temperature for reaction?

    • @Ace011mm
      @Ace011mm 10 років тому

      Thanks a lot! I was confused with this, what is with carbon, no body can tell me... But, how CO2 can react with water, how to do this? (my English not so good, sorry) :) I will watch your videos when I find free time...

    • @Ace011mm
      @Ace011mm 10 років тому

      No, you say "The CO can be reacted again with water to get CO2 and more hydrogen". I want to ask how CO react with water but I make error, wrote "CO2" instread "CO" :)

    • @Ace011mm
      @Ace011mm 10 років тому

      Maybe on the same way like previous reaction of steam reforming, CO+H2O+ HEAT make CO2+H2?? Is this economical if we use this gases just for heating (no need for hydrogen production) because CO and H2 both are combustible?

  • @RandomExperiments

    Nice experiment! Nice video! :)

  • @Hegelrast
    @Hegelrast  11 років тому +1

    in a flame the reaction is much simpler, it is just plain combustion to CO2 and H2O... However, there is a non-catalytic variant of the cracking which occurs at much higher temperature (with a radical-based mechanism)

      Hmmmmm..... sounds like you may be referring to a HCS(hydrogen cracking system) where hydrocarbon vapors are fed into a tub heated to high temps to create hydrogen molecules.
      People are using a system like this to improve gas mileage tremendously.
      I had one and it worked but the tube kept disintegrating with the heat from the manifold. Back to the drawing board.

  • @Hegelrast
    @Hegelrast  11 років тому

    you are right, I had the slides ready, but the video was too long, I had to cut something... As a rule I want to keep the videos as short as possible, if possible less than 5 min... This was over 8 min in my first version.
    Anyway, before or after I will make a specific video about bromine addition to double bonds (I have a specific idea in mind) - And the baeyer test can be easily found on any organic chem textbook....

    "If you can measure what you are talking about and express it in numbers, then you know something about it. But if you can't measure it, if you can't express it in numbers, your knowledge is unsatisfactory." W.T. Lord Kelvin. Worse still, not giving exact amounts prevents others from verifying what you do, that violates the fundamental principle of the scientific method.
