Access to medicines is a universal right. This documentary, with the testimonies of experts in health and legal issues, explains why India has become a world leader in the manufacture of generic drugs and follows the legal and social process of, The Gliveec Case, where Novartis took the Indian government to Court in a dispute over the granting of a patent for this drug which treats cancer. The judgment found in favour of the Indian Government earlier this year (2013).
This film documents the seven year legal battle, including first hand interviews with people involved in this case, which gives the documentary a unique relevance.
Finance: ACCDand City Council of Barcelona.

Typical western mentality start the video showing old Delhi, look how crowded and filthy their capital is imagine rest of the country keep repeating the same throughout the video. Even the color tone of the whole documentary is gloomy and depressing even for city like Mumbai where it is sunny almost throughout the year, by accident ? Do not think so.

A good government is supposed to be like India, try to protect the public's interests. even for laws is served for the public, not just for some monopolies.
I do hope that china would also have more such researchers and famous people fight for the public, not just receiving the money from Western big companies and serve them.

Griten Goyary Not at all and I am very welcome for your comment! I would like to recommend you to go to visit China in the future. I come from a small town in south China, and when I first go to visit Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou, I can't express how develop the cities are. I used to go to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, but none of the city is like Chinese city, full of energy and people are looking forward. You can feel it when you are wandering around.
Of course, I would say there are still a lot of people in poor, but which country could be perfect? Surely the Chinese government is trying to resolve this problem. However, sometimes not all the officers are as wise as the central government and these lower level officer would sometimes spoiled the system.
One last thing, I feel that China is actually a highly capitalised country coated with the communist. As a famous saying from Deng Xiao Ping, whatever the color of the cat, the best is the one who can catch the mouse:)

It's not just developing countries that benefit from low cost medicines, but also the West. The UK's NHS relies upon low priced import of generics especially from India, otherwise it's annual medicine bill of £13 billion could easily triple.

    • @xSCHEF
      @xSCHEF 9 років тому +18

+munsifghalib Its not also not only the developing countries that are hurt by the trade agreement, the people in the West are hit just as hard. It's a couple dozen companies, usually owned by the same couple of famillies that profit billions and billions of dollars. Now it's easy to hate on the US, because they are not alone in this, but the US government IS the powerhouse behind the trade agreement.

Laws shouldn't be like North Korea where laws meant for sugjugation of people and mass killing of people.

Based Indian pharma. Generics are great. The US medical industry and the multinational pharma industry are definitely not for the people. It's pretty disgusting that they even allow marketing of medications via TV ads etc in the US. The way it's meant to work is that you have an illness, and the doctor diagnoses you and prescribes a treatment with informed consent, NOT "see a TV ad, diagnose yourself then convince the doctor of your symptoms and ask the doctor to try that medication". If it's indicated for treatment of that illness, the doctor probably won't argue too much, as long as it's not inappropriate for the patient. That's what the pharma companies are counting on. India, as with any place, has its issues, but I'm impressed with their attitude towards multinational pharma parasites.

Yeah you guessed correctly! I'm a afghan girl.
Good question. Unfortunately women and girls in Afghanistan don't have freedom :(. As a girl in Afghanistan you have to listen to your husbent/father. You don't have freedom to chose for your own life and if you don't do so people will talk bad behind you. But now it is better than before.
Womens freedom is diffrent and it depends to from which ethnic groups someone are. For example the pashtons don't allows their women to educate ..etc, but women from other ethnic groups such as tajiks or hazara have more freedom ( it also depends on their family )

    • @petraakbari846
      @petraakbari846 3 роки тому

To sum up women in Afghanistan don't have freedom becouse of some wrong beliefs that people have. Society in Afghanistan is male dominated.
I hope some day will be peace in Afghanistan😕!
(Sorry for my grammar mistakes and I hope you got answer to your question)
      Best regards 🌹🌹

    No, this isn't socialism.
When we talk about a socialist country, we speak of nations that want to abolish any and all forms of capitalism. Ultimately, the economy of that country is threatened, and dictators end up taking power.
A proper country needs to be both capitalist and socialist. The common man should be allowed rights to own their properties and sell them, but the govt should ensure that capitalism doesn't end up exploiting the customers with sky-high prices either.
The above incident is an ideal example of times when India function like an ideal economy.

Sir, the biosimilar is called Adalimumab, it costs about 100 pounds, very very expensive. If you have any Indian friends returning, you should ask them to buy this injection. I am surprised why only Cadila manufactures this drug, kind of monopoly.

Why did the producers have to emphasize the Indian poverty so flagrantly in their video? Was there a point to it? Was it to get the sympathies of the audience? If that was so I do not think it worked. I believe you should state your case dispassionately and let the devil take the hindmost.

if the big pharma companies use a digital platform like an ERP to capture their costs on R&D and such ERP's are in turn, audited by government approved auditors then both the government and the companies can have a more data based understanding of true costs of R&D.
But there is bigger question of how much and what regulations should be in place for the pharmaceutical industry since it is a vital industry that has a direct impact on the lives of people. Maybe the government should start their own labs and fund R&D for all diseases and then once a drug has been invented, only manufacturing and distribution should be given to corporations.

i wonder why there was no counter-view or soundbytes from the other side of the table added in this documentary.
[also, what's with the canned shots of our town appearing as if they were filmed in the 70s 80s.. like the Agra shots, out of context]
personally, having briefly studies process patent versus product patents back in 2000-2001, i realised how the likes of the Khorakiwalas (Wockhardt) or Yusuf Hamieds (Cipla) had pioneered to be the real buccaneers
using every tool 'nd trick in the book or simply being defiant and brash.. the big brats were reverse engineering (abusing the process patent regime we had then) and selling the formulations as generics with some tweaks in the compounds/ derivatives or the ratios!
yes, it did help the masses, but those were not the only goals or the nobility claimed by the pirates was not just justified by that alone.
The had running enterprises (Yusuf got Cipla from his father and being half European anyway.. also got relevant education in Europe) and the excuses of making life saving medicines affordable was
a saleable argument to make for the profits and expansion of their own top-line!
it helps that media sells its soul and goes with the tide.. sometimes chiding sometimes writing paeans of praise on the same side of the argument.
take for example the slutty Times Group in Bharat en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhārat_Gaṇarājya or the equivalent NYT
    nytimes.com/2000/12/01/world/selling-cheap-generic-drugs-india-s-copycats-irk-industry.html
    nytimes.com/2011/09/19/health/policy/19drug.html
sadly the Indian FDA is almost a paper dragon or so it has been for most part.
thus the real risk to consumers, patients is about quality, adherence (or lack thereof) to GMP and in general the risk of contaminations and damage in the manufacturing, storage or logistical chains.
it was because of these lapse or goof-ups that the likes of Saudi Arabia at one point refused to accept Govt. administered polio vaccines (after a few cases of kids having suffered resurfaced)
as a nation, we have to seek the balance in quality and innovation.. currently we are more towards piggy-backing on the inventions or discoveries of others.. rather than doing something from grass-roots ourselves.
the value add is where the respectable and real merit is.. Cipla which joined hands with the Chinese (Biomab) to get a foothold into 𝕓𝕚𝕠𝕤𝕚𝕞𝕚𝕝𝕒𝕣𝕤 soon disassociated themselves (to chart their own course to compete with the likes of Biocon, Dr Reddys Labs, Lupin Pharma, Glenmark, Intas Biopharma).
basically, making them cheap by tweaking the processes or compound/ formulations may not be a viable strategy in itself for the long term.. seeing as we are
the dominance of the Chinese and others in doing the same (and oftentimes doing it better).
