You're one of my favorite knitting podcasters. Thanks for sharing your journey and future plans :)
And as a pastry chef I can attest - yes, take notes! For everything! You will not remember your thought process in a month, year, or more and it can be SO frustrating. Take notes. Just do it. Happy knitting 😜💕

Don’t be intimidated by color work! Its way less daunting than you think. I watched a few videos about color work tensioning from Andrea Mowry which was super helpful. My biggest tip is knit continental with one color and English with the other and keep it the same throughout the entire project. Good luck!

I recommend the pattern "Twinkle" by Midori Hirose (read as Hiroseh, Ranuculus' designer). It was my first pattern for stranded color work, it was super easy and beginner friendly!

Hi! The Chinese dish-ware design that you’re talking about is called “Blue Willow” dishes! :)
Enjoyed your video as I knitted up my 2nd sweater ever - thanks for all the inspo and positivity!

YES to the being more diligent about fiber choice & swatching 😅 I started a sweater last year (and actually did swatch for it! BUT just in stockinette) and realized about a week later in that my yarn choice was completely wrong. the front-loaded work of doing research & a proper swatch feels annoying in the moment but can totally save you time & stress later!

Stranded colourwork is my favourite. I found it concentrates the mind :) I particularly love Fair Isle. There'll be no looking back once you get started :)

Love that you brought out the SMART goals
Also have been loving that colorwork blanket for a while. I made one of the free pattern squares as some practice! I want to make more. It knit up pretty quick!

First time viewer here! I really enjoyed your video and will be subscribing :) Penrose Knits has her School Run set (fingerless mittens, hat, headband) which is nice and versatile! I’m pretty sure you can buy them as a bundle on Ravelry which is slightly discounted compared to buying the patterns individually.

Loved listening to your goals and yes knitting should be fun! I got super stressed out when I spent a lot of money and time on a garment that I won’t wear because I don’t like it. Thr thoughts of having to frog it kills me too 😢 yes to being more SMART with knitting this year!!

Been watching your channel for a while and I love it! Your videos are so fun and inspiring, and I love your enthusiasm to re knit pieces you didn't love from last year! I've also learned from your videos that you can get KFO in DC, which means I gotta go down there and check it out! There are no KFO retailers near me in Boston but good thing my sister lives in DC...

Thank you for this sweet comment! I know that Looped in Dupont circle carries KFO, but you can actually order it from their website if you don't mind the shipping fee. Sometimes it even moves quickly through customs!

Great podcast Mandy! I'm totally with you on the 'knitting shouldn't be a source of stress' vein.
I did my first colourwork jersey in 2022, and did the Badger and Bloom by Anne Ventzel. I highly recommend this as a first colourwork jersey for several reasons. 1. It's made with a bulky yarn (CaMaRose Snefnug, or you can substitute it with Drops Air), 2. The colourwork has short intervals between colour changes, so you don't have to catch floats. Just one less thing to have to figure out. Check out Ravelry for different versions of it, I think it's a podcaster Jax who has done a really colourful version.
Lastly, a piece of advice on buying Knitting for Olive. Check what it costs to buy it directly from the website before buying from a retailer in the US. Even though I'm in New Zealand, and had exchange rates to adjust for, I think it was still way cheaper to buy from KfO even with shipping!

    • @knitsbymandy
      @knitsbymandy  Рік тому

Thanks for the tip! The two times I have purchased I have actually bought from the site and I think it is cheaper that way too.

I was also super intimidated by stranded colorwork but tried it last year! I started with a charted hat and it took me about 3-4 tries to get my floats and tension right. But it’s so fun and addicting seeing the pattern grow and change color. My current WIP now is a color work sweater! Now I’m obsessed with colorwork😬 if stranded is daunting, mosaic colorwork may be an option. I’m going to try that next!

Great episode! I get you wanting to do stranded knitting. I knit the Alaska hat and really focused on carrying the floats. Then I knit a “Fisherman’s Kep “ which is color work from the Shetland Islands which I LOVED. The pattern is free but they also have kits and have a group on Instagram. So glad I did before I attempted color work in a sweater. I then knit a Jennifer Steingass sweater The Altheda, which I loved doing! Excited to follow your new makes in 2023

Purl Soho has a free hat & fingerless glove pattern called “Wide Rib Hat + Hand Warmers.”
Also, I think you’d like Julie Hoover’s & Kim Hargreaves’ patterns.

Im not enjoying knitting right now. I am working on a sock that i started in june. I am finally getting to the sleeves on a sweater i started last september. I dont have central air. This weekend is going to be hot and i cant tolerate huge projects on my body. If i put it down it will never be finished.

    Thank you Mandy, great video.
Thank you for leaving the pictures up for a while when talking about the pattern. Sometimes the pictures are up for a short time while the podcaster continues to talk about the pattern features and it’s hard to understand what they are referring to.
For free gloves/fingerless mitts and hats, you can’t beat the Purl Soho site. I also like the Braided Mitts by Tera Johnson, and the Cloudburst by Adrienne Grey.
