This was such a huge upset. Brooks even admitted to his team if they played the Russians 10 times, the Russians would win 9. He didn't BS them, he told them they had a CHANCE to steal 1 win from the greatest hockey team of all time. And then they went out and did it.

these were a bunch of college kids that got demolished by the same soviet team 13 days earlier in madison square garden by a final score of 10-3. The same soviet team that had been dominating world competition for 2 consecutive decades, winning 4 consecutive gold medals and winning the summit series in the 70s, and dominating the nhl all-star teams.
given the crappy morale of the US, that's why it was a miracle.

The ultimate score in this game is Johnson's first goal with a second left in the 1st period. USA is fortunate their best scorer gets that fat rebound mistake by the goalie, then clutches and freezes the goalie and waits to get in the clear and then slides it past. 9.5% of all players would have shot right away. It's a goal scorer's goal if I've ever seen one, and it gave the team momentum going into the locker room. Biggest goal ever in USA Olympic hockey in my opinion.

That was an NHL strategy. No other teams pulled their goalie. Not the Soviets, Swedes, Finns, or anybody else. Today, of course, that's what all hockey countries do. Just like the rest of the world had no touch icing while in the NHL you had to race to the puck and if you touched it first before the opposing player touched it, it was then icing. Only recently did the NHL adopt the international rule of no touch icing.

Agreed, it was a turning point. Johnson could skate and handle the puck faster than I can simply follow watching his play without slo-mo IR. However, maybe too much has been made about that goalie change. It seems as if neither goal against Myshkin was in any way an error on his part while usually-stellar Tretiak was beaten on both goals against him. We'll never know, but it's doubtful Tretiak (or anyone else in goal) would have stopped goals 3 and 4. Of course, Jim Craig was the best goalie on the planet that day.

@@joetravers6871 Russia has been a free country for decades, plenty of the top NHL players are Russian (Ovechkin, Malkin, etc.), and they are still a hockey powerhouse today.

Just after the game the Soviet team were all lined up and shot by order of Брежнев.....OK, that's not all true 😁

That goal didn't just win a hockey game! It was the first shot fired in a series of defeats for the Soviets. Then President Reagan put the final nail in the coffin (circa 1988).

Dont think russians wanted to land on moon, been the first in space was enough. Notice when they scored they just got on with the game didnt scream like banshees.

Fun fact. In 1980, the last time Canada won Olympic gold was 1952. They didn't win another gold medal for 50 years until 2002 when they beat the United States in the gold medal game in Salt Lake City. They won it again in 2010 against the United States in Vancouver, and again against Sweden in 2014 in Sochi. 1980 was the last time the Americans won the gold medal.
