The ultimate score in this game is Johnson's first goal with a second left in the 1st period. USA is fortunate their best scorer gets that fat rebound mistake by the goalie, then clutches and freezes the goalie and waits to get in the clear and then slides it past. 9.5% of all players would have shot right away. That's not why it was a miracle. It was a miracle because a bunch of college kids beat the team that was by far the best team in the world. Better than the NHL all star team(s). They beat all of the professional national teams and won the gold metal. Plus, the Soviets were famous and well known for dominating the 3rd period. During this game, the Americans scored 2 goals in the 3rd period and the soviets did not score any. The Americans worked really hard to get there, and it paid off.
That was legend and is a great example of hustle. But he also needed his goal scoring skill to beat a great goalie. And with no time to spare. It was remarkable.
Yes, well.... we took the moon from the Soviets in 1969, which was also a "come from behind" type of event.... seems fitting that we could take hockey from them in similar fashion.
We hadn't "come from behind" after Gemini. By Apollo 1 even (RIP), we were far ahead of the Soviets. Nothing is comparable to this event; that's why it's remembered so vividly.
Soviets didn’t pull the goalie during last minute of the game mainly because they were never in that situation. They never lost so they probably never practiced playing with a pulled goalie.
That was an NHL strategy. No other teams pulled their goalie. Not the Soviets, Swedes, Finns, or anybody else. Today, of course, that's what all hockey countries do. Just like the rest of the world had no touch icing while in the NHL you had to race to the puck and if you touched it first before the opposing player touched it, it was then icing. Only recently did the NHL adopt the international rule of no touch icing.
it always thought Al Michaels "Do you believe in miracles?" sounded a little canned... it was every other part of his work during that game that is legendary... my favorite is "11 seconds... you got 10 seconds..." as the whole nation was willing the clock down to zero
It's weird that in the movie Miracle they put so much work into making all the goals look like they did in real life, and they all are except the Soviet's 3rd. In real life Craig gets beat on a breakaway, but in the movie they have him get knocked over by a Soviet and the puck put into basically an empty net.
I decided to rewatch this back to back with the Disney movie and... WOW. I didn't expect dead-on accuracy but the third Soviet goal in the film comes after they knock down the goalie and putting it in on the rebound. Creative license for being the greatest country in the world!
It's so funny but you can clearly hear the calm and collected Ken Dryden yell "HE SCORES" as Al Michaels yells it a second later. The whole free world was pulling for that team of kids, even the Canadian Ken Dryden. :)
And if the otber 3 goals hadn't been scored? 2 of which were by Mark Johnson, his one goal wouldn't have meant much. Or if Jim Craig had stopped all the potential shots? What I'm saying is there is no "I" in team. They won because they were a team .
