We just listened to the LP at this past Sunday's brunch. It's a double album but no one asked for the second record to be played.

I ran ALLL in my cinemas for 4 years on spot sessions 1976-1980. Such good fun.

They should still make classical musicals.

Well I was only 18 at the time , very much influenced by the Critics who savaged it . Particularly acerbic comments went for some of the choreography. I have seen snippets of some of it and I can’t help but think of that old cliche this might actually be “ way ahead of it’s time .”

It really wasn't. The talent pool was a bit off for making it straight and it wasn't funny enough to compete with Mel Brooks. Hillerman and Khan were right out of the Brooks ensembles..but didn't do as well in this direction.
Shephard was way over her head.
Reynolds was on the cusp of dramatic manly actor moving to comic actor. It was like putting James Coburn and Clint Eastwood in a musical...why?
They recorded the music on set instead of looping it from a proper acoustic record studio.
The people who knew how to make this movie were too old in 1975. The people that would know how to make the movie were not adults or not born yet.
Not everything works....even with a lot of talent at hand.
When Cybill Shepard did The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice a decade later, her voice had matured and she NAILED her numbers and on screen presence.

@@STho205 There was a re edited version of At Long Last Love and it was re evaluated in the 21 Century . It now has a new generation of fans who will viciously defend it and debate you. Allegedly Bogdonavich who even abandoned it and apologized , saw the retooled version and embraced It. I don’t know whether or not it was true it was psychiatrist friend of his named Dr. Melfi who liked the new version of At long Last Love and urged him to see it

@@dagnabbit6187 but the re-edit, was done by people that understood pacing and the methodology of 40s films. Several directors and editors figured it out again in the 80s. PB didn't have a clue. Just a mocking That 70s Show style.
It is similar to some of the 70s pop singers trying to do standards. In the late 80s Linda R. got training from Nelson Riddle who had produced, composed and conducted the music decades ago....Ta Da extremely popular, a very close revival of style with modern recording...and lots of rockers started knocking it out to success. Then dedicated Hot Music and Swing bands emerged by 2000.

@@STho205 This is what I read . A Studio Editor, Production MGR etc.etc named Jim Blakey was a seasoned pro born in the early 1900s . He was a huge Cole Porter fan and an expert . He saw the film and liked it . He had access to most everything including deleted scenes . He deemed that there was a good movie there but it was
put together all wrong . He took it on himself to reinvent it . His version appeared on NetFlix in 2011 . Blakey had sadly passed away. Bogdonavich who was obviously traumatized about the reception of this film and even distanced himself from it and whose career never fully recovered was told of this new version appearing on NetFlix . He was told the feedback was positive and that people liked it . PB decided to check it out and was stunned and he admitted his inadequacies . He thanked Blakey’s wife. From the clips I have seen on You Tube , I disagree with your assessment . You can read all of the info about its resurrection into now Cult Classic status .Back then Roger Ebert was the only Critic who defended it

@@curly_wyn, I've never read that anywhere. Can you provide a link? You might read Richard Brody's evaluation of it in The New Yorker. He blames the critics of the time, including ( maybe especially ) for what he calls their "blinkered" view of what he clearly thinks is a remarkable movie.

One of the worst films ever made! No one can sing or dance, and it’s just misguided more than anything. Burt Reynolds especially dances like a drunk trying to kill cockroaches.
