Got the JR pass 5 years ago when I last went. It was totally worth it and includes JR lines in Tokyo IIRC. But come again this time and they have increased the price so it was not worth it. So got separate fares instead. You need to go through with two tickets - fare ticket and express ticket and put them through the barrier before going onto the Shinkansen. If you’re going to multiple destinations like we did - Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and then back to Tokyo then there can be multiple tickets and can get confusing. Just check you have them all before leaving from Tokyo.
Thank you for the comment. I respectfully disagree about the second part of your comment. When someone is visiting Japan for the first time (which is what my channel is all about) and they've never stepped foot into Japan before, they will not understand the intricacies of separate fares, fare ticket and express ticket, etc. When someone visits Japan for the first time and they are planning to visit multiple cities, the cost savings and basic convenience of a standard JR Pass are immeasurable. @@carlrosa1130 I would have spent £400 for the journies I did. Buying separate fares cost around £200. So in my case it was not worth the JR pass this time. If I was going more than the destinations then yes, but it would have be a lot more than the 4 I did this time round.

Very few videos mention that you have to buy the pass BRFORE you get to Japan. Only then can you change the voucher for the pass IN Japan.
