I started watching the NBA before the Toronto Raptors even existed. It was all because of MJ. I was impressed by his leadership skills and offensive & defensive domination. Michael has won the Scoring Title 10 times, meanwhile, LeBron has won the Scoring Title just once. LeBron has played in 20 seasons and MJ just 15 but he still has accomplished way more. Here are some trophies & awards just in the 1980s before his 90s outburst:
      - 1984 NCAA Player of the Year
      - 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles (Gold Medal)
      - 1984 first game in the NBA
      - 1984/85 NBA Rookie of the Year
      - 1985/86 missed 64 games with a broken foot and went to the playoffs vs. Boston who were 40-1 at home. Michael scored 49 pts in game 1 & in game 2 he recorded 63 pts (critics and opposing fans) criticize MJ and the Chicago Bulls for failing against the Boston Celtics. However, look at the numbers I mentioned. What else could he have possibly done?
      - 1987/88 Defensive Player of the Year and Regular Season MVP
      - 1987 & 1988 Dunk Contest Champion back-2-back years
      - 1989 hit "The Shot" that sunk the Cavs
And then the 6 NBA Championships in the 1990s

Jordan was just different. I started watching the NBA because of Magic and Bird, then watched MJ dismantle the league, onto Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, DWade, Lebron, KD, and everyone in between. I've never seen anyone who had the insane combination of attributes he had: not just off-the-charts athleticism (though he clearly was a freak of nature--48" vert, 4.3 40, ridiculous body control, amazing anticipation and adjustment, ginormous hands, always on balance, the hang time, etc.); not just a crazy work ethic to always improve (came into the league with plenty questioning his size, defense, overall shooting--transformed himself into Defensive Player of the Year, bulked up, worked tirelessly on his shooting from every midrange shot on the court until he could find his spot anywhere); not just will to win (one of the most clutch performers of all time--shot 50% during 99% of the game, and when it was on the line with all the pressure and everyone knowing he would have the ball. . . shot 50% on all those buzzers beaters--the definition of clutch); not just his durability (he played all 82 games in most of his seasons with the Bulls); and not all the accolades and records. It was the sum total. No one was the complete basketball player he was on both ends of the court, every minute of every game. He was maniacal, an assassin, and the ultimate winner in college, Olympics, and the NBA. This mixtape, while awesome, only scratches the surface. He did something mind-blowing practically every night he stepped on the court, and that's not hyperbole. This isn't a mixtape--it's a small sample snapshot of what he was like on the regular, game in and game out. I agree the league has tremendous athletes, but never been anyone like him, and I seriously doubt we'll see anyone like him again.

I came to say exactly this. Also, back then they couldn't zone defend. They had to be within a couple of steps of the person they were defending or commit to the double/triple team on MJ... and because of Jordan's quick first step, he was already airborne before help could get there. He knew where the help was coming from and almost always curled away from the help. You don't see people attack defenses like MJ would.
I'll say this... at least Dar recognizes greatness and isn't too stubborn to admit someone is greater than whom he idolizes. It's also refreshing when a reacter can name the players that MJ just cooked, because at least they'll be able to compare MJ to someone.

It's really hard to trap a player who's quick and strong with high bball IQ. Remember you can hand check him while dribbling. You can touch his waist or even his arm/shoulder as he dribbles the ball. He had ton of moves and can attack u from different angles. And ofcourse he had one of the deadliest pull up jumpers in history. Then add the fact that he was good in drawing double teams to find an open shooter or big man underneath. He averaged 11 apg in the 1991 finals. That last possession in the double nickel game showed us how good he was in drawing double teams and finding the open man. In short, you really couldn't tell what he was going to do and how he would score against u. Look at Luka, he's slower and less athletic than most nba players, but they couldn't perfectly trap him because of his fundamentals and bball IQ.

Great comment. I scratch my head when some folks say it was easy for MJ. Well yup, he made it look easy because his anticipation skills were off the charts, plus he could score any which way. The mark of a truly great player is how easily he scores. Dude took and made tough shots, but he just as well was incredible at getting open shots without running around like a headless chicken.

I've been an NBA fan since the mid 1970's and coached youth basketball for years. 2 of my 3 sons played competitive basketball through high school here in North Carolina. My middle son even attended camps with Stephon Curry that his dad, Dell Curry, sponsored here in the Charlotte area. My personal top 3 are: 1. Michael Jordan, 2. Larry Bird, 3. Magic Johnson. After the top 3, it’s more debatable to me. I’ve seen everyone over the last 45+ years. IMO, these players had the best BALANCE of FG%, FT%, clutch play, great offense, great defense, makes teammates better, great team play, shares the ball, passing ability, finishing, coachable, high basketball IQ, finds a way to win, has all areas of the basic fundamentals down pat, seeks high % shots FIRST, knows where teammates are on the court at all times, able to score while being fouled, played against tougher competition, played against great defenses. No one today has ALL of these attributes. These 3 are the only players ever to not have any holes in their games at all. Not even Lebron can match this. He flops, gives up on defense ( a huge negative), and has choked in too many key games. All of these negatives are glaring and brings down his value. To me, only Michael, Larry, and Magic had ALL of these attributes and are (by far) the most clutch and best players of all time. Consistently winning the close games is what separates icon players from everyone else. No players after my top 3 come close to doing it at the level they did. Though today's players have a lot of talent, most players lack most of these attributes and no one has all of them. Defense and team play are almost nonexistent today compared to the 80’s/90’s. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson (by far) are the most clutch players of all time, did it against the best defenses of all time, and did it during the most talent rich era of all time (80’s/90’s). Because of the addiction to three pointer, lack of teamwork, and lack of defense the game of basketball is not nearly as exciting and interesting. It seems that many young people who do not understand the fundamental attributes of the game and haven’t seen players pre -2000 play night in and night out are the ones who claim that Lebron is the best. Older people who have seen decades of the best players know better. Anyway, overall, Great video.

Too easy? Imagine in today's ultra-plush Tempurpedic pillow soft NBA? Where there is no more perimeter pitbulls on guard and where the rim protector is as extinct as Woolly Mammoth. Check any list of the greatest perimeter defenders all-time and I guarantee you you'll see Moncrief, Alvin Robertson, Rodman, Michael Cooper, Dennis Johnson, Gary Payton, Joe Dumars, Pippen (who defended Mike in practice). None of them could stay in front of MJ. You're not understanding just how quick he was off dribble or jab-step. I was extremely fortunate to have scene prime Mike in person a few times and my 20/20 vision just couldn't grasp how quick he was. He made the best perimeter defenders all-time look they were wearing concrete block shoes. Zeke Thomas once said that Jordan was so good that at times it looked like he was playing against high-schoolers. Durant, who's an elite player and athlete told Jay Williams that if Mike played today he'd easily be the best player on the planet. Kevin knows hoops like Bo Jackson knew Nike cross-trainers.
Black Jesus is the GOAT of a lot of peoples GOATs (Bird and Magic). After the first time Bird played Jordan (rookie season) he told a Boston Globe reporter "that guy is going to best the greatest ever - you just watch." Not only did Larry become a legend he became a prophet. No bias here - I hated Jordan growing up cause I've bled purple & gold since Magic's rookie season. Magic is my favorite player all-time but without hesitance I proclaim MJ to be the GOAT. If he played today he'd still be ahead of his time. Who now plays like him? We haven't seen that type of aerial artistry since he retired. If someone today had even half of Jordan's game I would not have cancelled my NBA League Pass. The guy was a beast. Animal in man. Early in his career, Mike didn't trust his teammates. When he got double and triple teamed, sometimes he tried to do too much and wasn't as successful as he should have been. When he got better teammates and felt he could trust them, it almost became impossible to double and triple team him. You are correct, some players have his ballhandling ability now, some have his shooting ability, some have his athleticism, some have his passing ability and some have his defensive ability. But few if any have all of those in one package. Then when you add in his drive, work ethic and will to win and even now, I don't think there are any players with that total package today.

    • @mpound97
      @mpound97 Рік тому

No he was successful at scoring on 2 or 3 guys. That's part of the reason he didn't trust his old teammates along with the fact they were on coke. When the playoffs came around, the 1 on 5 ball didn't win. When he fell into the triangle and his teammates got better, it opened everything up for Jordan.

    • @hshaughnessy17
      @hshaughnessy17 Рік тому +1

@@mpound97 The Bulls got rid of the cokeheads before Mike's third season. There were four more years before he won a title. Part of it was getting better teammates but part of it was Mike learning to trust teammates. That was the knock the first 5 or 6 years of his career, that he tried to do too much by himself. And of course, Mike struggled sometimes against double and triple teams. He was the best I have seen at beating consistent double and triple teams but he isn't perfect. Christmas day in 86 is a great example. Nationally televised game. He goes 10-28 from the field with 6 turnovers. Bulls up by 1 with 8 seconds left. He forced a 15 foot jumper over a Ewing double team even though he had a guy wide open on the baseline. He missed. Ewing hit the game winner at the buzzer. Jordan is the greatest player I have ever seen by a wide margin, but I have seen him have some really bad games, where he should have utilized his teammates better.

Huge hands, largest for a guard maybe ever,
Greatest clutch player ever. You could argue (1a. Bird, 1b. MJ) maybe??
Greatest leaper vert-wise at the time but, knew how to manipulate his body to "hang" and finish better than anyone ever,
Greatest guard shot blocker, by far!
    Greatest wing defender, by far!
    Greatest agility ever,
    Greatest core and balance ever,
    Greatest footwork ever,
    Greatest post up guard ever,
Had a 43% 3pt shooting season, no one talks about this, for some reason?
Most fundamentally sound, "great athlete" ever! (due to great H.S. & college coaching. Dean Smith was about Defense and fundamentals or you didn't see minutes. He "needed" to be "cut" in H.S. because his older brother was really good and well-known. Thinking getting cut boosted his drive to win as much as he did and compete every night? Theory...
    Great freethrow shooter!
***As bad a beat down physically as he took, he would not have been as great without this 💯 He punished teams for "punishing him." Ice when it counted in the playoffs as well.
Played hurt always, then hyperfocused. He would dominate while hurt? Not just the flu game either. This happened regularly.

Jordan put up his crazy numbers in what would be considered a slow era of basketball. Pace of game was quite slow then with less possessions and scoring. It was also defensively a harder league to play in a lot of ways. Hard fouls were considered the norm and hand checking made it much harder to handle the ball. Today's players are mostly physically at least superior, but that AAU style that they learn as teens really does not do them a lot of favors. Like most super star talent you could plant them in whatever era you wanted to and they would be great. Just like Wilt, if you put Wilt into the modern NBA he would still be a star. Honestly if you could take Wilt and give him 60 years of modern sports science then he would be down right terrifying.
A lot of people over look Jordan for his defense. He was on top of the steals charts most years as well as blocking a ton of shots for a wing. Maybe my favorite part about him is watching those reverses. Don't know that I have ever seen someone who could work the magical spin quite like him off the glass.

Michael Jordan's top two 3 point shooting seasons
    50.0
    42.8
Steph Curry top two 3 point shooting seasons
    45.5
    45.4
He was clearly a good three point shooter later in his career. The three point line was new when he came into the league.

MJ that character in a video game you max out at 100 all stats!! He a cheat code always the best rating on all Basketball games and seeing him live and Lebron live being born in 81 there is NO comparison 👊💥👍🏻
Lebron calling himself the GOAT to convince himself of it when we all know REAL GOAT dont call themselves GOAT!!
Remember Jordan played in a tougher league and made the game look that easy imagine what he would do in today's weak game play man average 50 a game....

I honestly feel sorry for basketball
Fans that didn’t get to see Jordan play .. it was something they’ll never understand and no highlights will ever explain it.. he wasn’t just the biggest sports star at the time he was one of the most famous People in the world and there was no internet back then ..

his huge hands were a competitive advantage. he would palm the ball and swing it around like its a tennis ball.
