  • How we are rocked on the pendulum of life, swinging between hope and dread, fear and desire! This song asks a simple but fundamental question - Why? Oh seeker, why are you caught in this place between craving and aversion, lurching, reeling, swinging up and down, never at peace?

This poem by Bhusuku is an example of ‘sandhya bhasha’ (twilight language) employed by Tantric Buddhist masters, who Parvathy says were wiped out by dominant religions but are the progenitors of Baul poetry and practice as we know it today. The language is a mix of early Bengali, Pali and Maithili.

If there is an embodiment of intensity, Parvathy is it. As our friend, as an advisor, as a fiery challenger, she has brought us into deeper touch with ourselves. This recording was made as part of our week-long immersion with Parvathy at her home and akhada on the outskirts of Trivandrum in September 2011. She warmly welcomed us, housed us, fed us, sang for us and spoke to us with great depth and insight about the Baul path and about life itself. An experience that we still carry with us.
Parvathy Baul is a Baul singer and saadhika, painter and storyteller from Bengal and has been a disciple of Shashanko Goshai and Sanatan Das Baul. She divides her time between her home in Trivandrum, Kerala and the Baul ashram she has built near Shantiniketan in Bengal. (parvathybaul.com/)

Who was Bhusuku ? And how he got this name?
His original name was Santi Barma but after ordination as a monk his name was "Santi deva" and was from around 7th century , he is considered one among 84 Buddhist Mahasiddha's of Indian-subcontinet. He was born in a royal family as a Prince of "Saurastra" and was son of King Kushal Barma and Queen Bajrayogini .Since , his childhood he was bright ,intelligent and very kind in nature and used to respect everyone equally , even he used to respect and love his das dashi (helpers) and was always thinking about achieving "Buddhahood". At the age of 6 he met a Buddhist Yogi , who gave him initiation of "Manjushree"(Bodhisattva of Wisdom) Sadhana and since then he used meditate regularly according to the instruction until one day Manjushree appears in front of him. He received direct teachings of Buddhism , specially about "Tri Pitka" and "Pragya Paramita". Manjushree appears whenever he pray with urge for answer related to dharma with great devotion .He left his palace a night before he was about be enthronement , and met a Yogi named "Manju bajra samadhi" ,who gave him highest level of teachings about Samadhi and then Pragya (wisdom). After practicing for 12 years he finally realized the core meaning of Pragya Paramita" and achieved many Laukik and Lokotar Siddhi's. After a while he received ordained as a monk in "Naland Mahavihara" from Upadhya "Jayadev" here he received his name "Santideva" because of his peaceful nature.
He received teachings of Sutra and Tantra during his stay in Nalanda and used to practice diligently and whenever , there were question he has access to ask directly from Bodhisattva Manjushree ,which enables him gradually to win over Bahiri (outer) , Vitri (Inner) ,and guhya(secret) obstacle and procced forward in "Panchamarga " and finally realize and entered "Darshan marga" (Level of Bodhisattva ).During that period he wrote two books "Sutramamuchaya" and Sikshyasamuchaya" as a summary of what he has realized and learnet from Arya Manjushree , but kept it secret.
He was in "Vusuku Charya " (only eating and sleeping conduct) , fellow monks only see him eating 5 times and sleeping and not active in Vihar's, he was always silent and in a peaceful mode , but inside he was in Pravaswar stithi ( luminous state) even whenwhile eating or sleeping. Fellow Pandits and monks wasn't happy about his behavior and used to backbite and taunt him. These fellow monks nick named him "Vusuku" to tease but he wasn't affected by these taunts rather he secretly write another very book named "Bodhichariyaavatar " (The way of Bodhisattva).
The so called decent Pandits Santideva's conduct wasn't according to the rules of Vihara , hence the started planning to get rid of him.At that time in Nalanda , every year jestha suklapakxya there was a tradition of preaching Dharma discourse among themselves .Unaware Pandits plans a conspiracy and use that day defame Santideva , so that he would himself left the Vihar , they announced that Santideva is going to give a Dharma discourse on that day .
When the day came he was asked to preach , initially he just tried to skip by saying he doesn't know but fellow pandit's and monks insist him until he agreed. Then Santideva asked to prepare a Dharma throne for discourse and Pandits tried to use this as opportunity to defame him and announced everybody to assemble in North-east side Dharmsala of Nalanda and prepared a very high throne without ladder. Santideva was called for discourse , he reached the throne and push one hand in the throne and miraculously he was seated in the throne, after seeing that jealous Pandit's were amazed everyone gathered were surprised too. Then Santideva asked "Shall i read what Lord Buddha told or shall i explain their meaning first ?"Pandit's thought that he might remember Buddha's word but he wouldn't be able to explain it's meaning ,then they insist to "explain the meaning". Then Santideva thought which book shall he teach among 3 books that he has written and decided to tell "Bodhicharyaavatar".And started to preach and as he was teaching the delusion of other fellow Pandit's gradually ended and started listening with great devotion. When he reached 9th chapter and started explaining Pragyaparamita a miraculous riddhi pratiharya display occurred. while teaching 35th paragraph he levitate from throne and vanished and until the end of the book his voice was only heard after that it stopped. After that incident , there was an uproar about Vusuku , the one they thought as a lazy monk was actually a highly realized Bodhisattva .After that he left Nalanda and stayed independently in north east area as a yogi . Among many his another famous incident related to his life , once he made 500 non Buddhist Paarbadi Pasandak followers as his disciple , they used to stay in North west part in a village .Due to natural calamity , there was a scarcity of food, these people came to Acharya and said "if you save us from this calamity then we will respect your teachings if not then it is of no use". He filled his begging bowl with rice and went in deep samadhi and he blessed it ,which enabled him to feed all those villagers till the calamity ended, and preach them the Buddha's teachings .He saved life of many beggars during similar calamity. Acharya came during a war between two group and start teaching dharma discourse which end the war. Other famous incident was winning the sastartha(dharma debate) and riddhi pratiharya (miraculous powers) against Shaivite Pandit "Maheswor " in a debate organized by the king of "Khatbihar". He has written many books among which the famous Sutra related books are 1. Bodhicharyaavatar 2.Sikxyasamuchaya 3. Sutrasamuchaya , in which Bodhicharyaavatar , became very famous instantly and 100 of vasya was written in India itself . It was translated by the disciple of Guru Padmasamvab and santarakchita named Vikshu "Kawa Palchek" in Tibetan .
Vusuku (Santideva) has also written many books of Tantra , among which "Sri Guhya samajmahayog tantrabalibidhi" is popular. Talapatra named "Chariyacharya binischaya" has mantioned that Vusuku has written many Vajrayana related books .
He has sang many Doha's ( song of realization) which express "Chandali" and "Sahaja" , these doha's were very popular in Bengal. In one of his doha he named himself "kaat" and the above doha is one of many doha's that once sang by Mahasiddha Santideva and his followers.

Actually Buddhist influence is still there in Bengali Hindu civilization a lot . Yes Buddhist way of spirituality was very strongly rooted in Ancient Bengal, The great Pala dynasty was Buddhist manly. Although I am not sure about its link with Bauls. In fact Tibetan Buddhism is descended from Bengali Buddhism, not many people knows it! Tibetan Buddhist tantra system looks like linked with Tantric system of Bengal. one common link is Goddess Kali . Concept of Kali is found in Tibetan Tantrism in many ways.
We do understand that Brahmins probably took Bauls as threats but most Hindu kings and empires both in North India ( the Guptas) and Bengal patronized Buddhists, as philosophically it has common ground and similarities and belongs to same land indeed! one exception may be Sashanka ( with controversy) . Buddhist / Hindu Pala dynasty was the probably Bengals greatest example of tolerance and coexistence. In fact many Buddhist monks of Nalanda university was from Brahmin families as well! . so it all depends on personal enlightenment as it seems!
Not so in the case of Islamic invasion for reasons well understood. Nalanda university destruction is one such painful incident.

As once 75% of Indian sub-continent was Buddhist , and Buddhism rained over 1800 years in Indian sub continent ,it is bound to have strong impact over todays Hindu culture. Arya "Atisha" was from Bengal and from 11th century his contribution was tremendous to spread Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet. His teaching are mostly used by "Gelug "(H.H.Dalai Lama is from Gelug ) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Tantra as used in Hinduism and Buddhism are totally different ,as many people have rough interpretation that the word Tantra matches hence, both must be similar. But as Buddhist Tantra yana is "Aanatma " and "sunyata" based where as Hindu Tantra is "Aatma " based. In Hindu Tantra gradual series of recitation of mantra and visualization is used whereas, Buddhist Tantra start with the realization of "luminous mind" ,like" saktipath" Buddhist word for transmition of spritual energy and blessing is called "Adhisthana", with the Adhisthana of realized master one realize the true luminious nature of mind called 'Pravaswor chitta" and it is used as "Parasmani", just like when Parasmani touches the copper it changes it into gold ,as such with help of 'Pravaswor chitta " pancha klesha is turned into pancha gyana. In Hinduism "Kali" is used as parmeswor, equal to Brahma. As in sakta Tantra and other Tantra system of Hinduism there are 3 steps 1) Dasho aham (i am slave of kali) 2 ) stage Swo aham (i am kali) 3) nahum ( i don't exist only kali does) . But in Vajrayana Buddhism Devi And Devatas like kali,Ganesh, shivaji etc are used as Dharmapala (protector of Dharma) now you can see the use of kali and othe devi devas used in two different way in Vajrayana and Hindu Tantra. Before Islamic Invasion Shaiva kings like Mihirkul, king sasanka of Bengal ,Pusya mitra sungh etc started killing Buddhist population and distroying Viharas which makes Buddhism weaker in Indian sub continent before the last blow came from Islamic invasion .After destruction of Maha Viharas like Nalanda, Vikramasila, Odantapuri, sompuri, JAgaddala,Vallavi etc . there were no realized master remain many where killed and many fled to Nepal and then from Nepal to Tibet.Hence, there where no one to teach Buddhism. As, Buddhism is not faith based religion it is wisdom based hence, to absence of realized master gradually Buddhism declined and from many cultural festivals to philosophy were slowly Hindu wised .

Stop promoting Bauddha Nastikatavaada. Theologically Vaidika Sanatana Dharma and the Nastika Bauddha Tripitaka teachings are very very different. Some spiritual practices might have overlaps along with certain deities but the Hindu "Veda", "Ishwara" and "Aatman" are miles apart from the Baudhha "Shramanavaad", "Shunya" and "Anatman" Ideology.

Buddhist tradition is a continuation of Krishna's Sanatan religion, which preach the mantra of liberation from suffering, when and only when you please Vishnu with good deed (karma). Vishnu is the cause of the evolution of the universe and is the conjoined essence and object of meditative wisdom and active virtue (karma). Parvathy, your guru is Sanatan Baul, meaning eternal baul. You are eternal.

Jata dhari, or being so lost in devotion that one loses the combing of one's hair, which tangles in to a jata. This jata is an element of sadhuic knowledge and oneness

🙏🌺 thank you very much for your answer... several times I asked the same question, but nobody answered ...
i understand the ancient Tradition said that, being lost in devotion, all the rest has secondary importance ...but, if we look at it from a more practical point of view, we see that it is very uncomfortable and it becomes unmanageable when the hair are too long and entangled...Real Devotion comes from the Soul (and not from the length of the hair) ...
perhaps, in some cases, it is not necessary to follow the Ancient Tradition...🙏🌺

As we look our activities either we like or dislike and the things we like we are attached to it and the things we dislike we don't even want to see or feel it. how this like and dislike came because of "conditioning" .conditioning that we get from society ,family, culture ,tradition, that we learn what is good and what is bad. As the society is different the conditioning is different so likes and dislikes are different too. for eg: Americans can't eat spicy food but we find it delicious. Due to these conditioning it works as software and it creates a frame of good and bad and as we look, hear, taste, smell, touch it talley with the frame that we previously had within mili second of time and if, it falls within "good " then we like it and if it falls in bad we dislike it. and if doesn't fall in any we feel uninterested . Hence, if we like "raag" arises and if we don't like "dwesh" arises and if if both don't then "Moha"(ignorance and dullness) arises . hence, each of these "klesha" has imprint in our mind continuum which creates "Karma" .

Maybe hindu rulers did not destroy monuments of other religions, but there were times where certain greedy rulers betrayed their own communities or devised ways to plunder another city, most of the times in an indirect manner... They were at times bribed, or promised position where things turned ugly... But other than such cases I don't think Indian history involved much direct plundering and invasion of other cultures and I don't think the speaker in the video meant it that way....

Baul does NOT have it roots in Buddhism.
It has it's roots in Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) Radha/Krishna which is 5000 years ago, then when the Buddhists flowed into Bengal and needed protection from the Brahmanical society who rejected them, the Bauls were the only group who gave refuge.
The same with the Muslim Sufi when India was ruled by the Islamist and people were under conversation or if the Sufi had a problem it was the Vaishnava Bauls of Birbhum who accepted them into their fold. There was an exchange of information between the Bauls and anybody they accepted or those who needed protection. However, they keep their own ways.
Lineage Bauls and by Lineage I mean people who have been Bauls going way back, not these made up lineages using the songs from this lineage but making up a lineage. These songs have already been recorded and preserved that is why you have songs to sing. Baul songs have all ready been recorded going way back, we have done all this work. We are the pioneers who brought Baul to the world, it was a lot of hard work going back 70 years but now mention only use. Bauls have always been peacekeepers accepting others but that does not mean they become the other.
The Vaishnava Bauls of Birbhum which by the way is where Baul originates. I have no idea why all these new stories. It is a Cultural Appropriation, taking the names off the stories, making up new lineages.
Kichhu din mone mone is a Nabani Das Khapa Baul song. No one outside of this lineage even knew this song until Purna Das Baul recorded it. This song Kichhu din mone mone was officially recorded by my father Purna Das Baul in the 1960's at India's First Record company, Hindustan Records. Anybody, who calls themselves a Baul Master should know this. All of Bengal Knows this???

Answer to Emptyrainbow : You commit a big mistake. Buddha chala dharma came to stop degraded brahmins desinterpreting the eternal vedas. There after Shankaracarya wanted to reestablish the real dharma progressively by chasing the atheists so called buddhists clearing the path for Madhvacarya to reinstate Vaisnava sanatan dharma. Nowadays, lamaists are just black tantrik eating whatever they receive as mlecchas worshiping gyalpos. There are History and facts not creeds.

When Buddhists flowed into Bengal? Tantric Buddhism travelled from Pala period Bengal to Tibet... eta charyapader gaan... and the only manuscript was found by Haraprasad Shashtri in Nepal!!! Charyapada is the root of modern Bengali, Assamese and Oriya... Bauls derive their rituals from Sahajyyana Buddhism of Pala period Bengal... it has been documented by many scholars... you can not deny history! Parvathy is absolutely right
