He makes some pretty notable "professional" and "big names" look like amateurs. I was fortunate to meet Guthrie about 4 years ago and he was like one of the guys you could be standing beside at the gig. Fantastic human being as well.

Just incredible, otherworldly creativity and profound technical ability. There are no other players like him. There are some GREAT guitar players out there. I love many of them. But someone has to be the king, and that king is Guthrie.

AMAZING.. I like what he does, right at
1:44 into 1:45, something i dont think I hear too often, plays a root note and another note octave higher and then bends them both a half step, perfect for that chord at the time. This guy blows me away.

If you could somehow combine every ground-breaking guitarist from Terrega to Segovia to Django to Joe Pass to Wes to Les to Chet Atkins to BB King to Clapton/BeckPage to Hendrix to Albert Lee /Johnny Hiland to EVH to Randy Rhoades and Satch...and then mix that with Byrd/Coltrane/Dizzy/Miles/Winton and maybe a little Oscar Peterson, Jimmy Smith, Keith Emerson, and Chick Corea for good measure, you’d get something close to Guthrie Govan. GG may be (possibly) the most gifted recording guitarist alive. He’s not just fast, he’s incredibly musical, he understands exactly what he’s doing from a historical perspective AND he can instantly morph between any style or genre and outplay the best chick’n picker, jazz chord melody-er, be-bop horn player, fusion-er, ragtime piano roll-er, shredder, rocker, etc. Yup a force of nature.

Hello here from the year 2432.
We're still looking at Guthrie in our standard reference for when music was produced by humans playing tactile objects derived from earth based bio-structures.
Common teaching is that there once lived a human who perfected the art of a craft such that it could never be duplicated by machine or nature based entities. Shows up in our slang as "waved it" or earlier slang as "Don't get your expectations to Guthrie'd, you're not that good, you'l only be unhappy"

Even if you knew exactly how each and every fret on the board would sound like, and even if you could move you fingers in such a way that you could let them play any set of notes you wanted, you still couldn't do this. No. There's something much more genius going on in his head at light speed. He is the embodiment of all the qualities of guitar playing, and it really makes you wonder how is this fuckin possible?!

I almost feel like saying something bad because on UA-cam, hating is the best form of flattery! Anyone who talks trash about any of Guthrie's video is really so much more blown away than the people who love it that they themselves can't even stand it. There are so many flawlessly executed melodic ideas here and a ton of incredibly fast licks...but no "shred".

Anyone with guitar knowledge must admitt that this guy is definetly up there in the guitar god pantheon, having watched most of his videos i undoubtedly place him above vai malmsteen satriani and the other big guitarists.
Guthrie never hits the wrong notes, places a lot of feel in his music, he can play a wide range of styles like a master, he is also very humble and has a good attitude overall towards other people and other guitar players in general sharing what he knows patiently.

Which brings me to my point, EVH, Schenker etc.... were and are great guitarist. But the time is now, and I have worn their shit out. When I discovered Govan, I was blown away - he embodies everything I like, Rock, Shred, Fusion, Jazz etc.... and his CD Erotic Cakes is a masterwork! If you like Holdsworth, EJ, Morse etc... you will love Erotic Cakes IMHO. One thing I love about GG is he never has any dead time in his runs and phrases - no filler notes here - just puer inspiration. Love Him!!!!!

It's called improvisation with key changes, of course there are many scales we're not familiar to, he mixes em up in a whole chord possibility. It's quite hard to think about all the things you can do at the same chord, but that gives you the chance of different approaches. He's a master of improv.
