A good while ago I found the character Abathur very interesting and decided to start playing him. 8 levels later and after relying on the mini map so damn much as him when I played other characters it was second nature to use it. Moral of the Story? I got better by playing one of the hardest to play characters in the game. This beeping sounds like a much better Idea. Do this people.
Great example! I think the two things that really help differentiate bad abathurs from good ones are effective XP soaking and map awareness, and honestly knowing when/where you can soak xp safely is just another map awareness thing. With a bad abathur, it feels like you're always a player down, and when a good abathur it feels like you're never alone.
I agree. But I think Vikings are more difficult on Quick Matches and random queues. If you don't have teammates with brain it's gonna be pain. People need to split up on all lanes, farm globes and protect vikings. Sometimes they instead all go mid for mindless teamfight, meanwhile your 2 other vikings on top and bot are dying.
Solid tip. I've recommended looking at the minimap frequently to players and stressed how important map awareness is to them, but an actual audio reminder takes it to a new level. Great video.
Thank you so much Pally, this thing makes it so much easier because it yells at me every 6 seconds, but his still subtle enough to not be a endurance when I'm in team fights.
Pally, I started using this during my matches, and, I've found it really helpful for making myself more aware of my map awareness as well as noticing a lot of my other habits in game. This one of the most helpful things I've found for HoTs advice. Thank you so much!
Having map awareness and being able to get your team to follow a ping to an opportune objective/boss/camp etc IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT THING. Played a Braxis hold game today. Was up against a tough Cho'gall Murky combo. Our team got a rare opp though with 3 of the enemy team dead including Cho'gall. I pinged the boss, and the beacons just went live. If we get boss him the enemy team is playing defensive the rest of the way and we have a chance to win the game a long drawn out game since we can't team fight to save our lives.. INSTEAD. Our Varian, after getting bot beacon goes to clear minions ( no camps pressure btw) leaving me (Khara,) Valla and Valeera to get boss. Our Guldan doesn't join us either, gets top beacon and then minions ( No camp pressure either). I start the boss hoping they'd figure it out and join us, but they don't and I die tanking the boss, we dont get him. I get blamed for starting boss and Varian and Gul Dan escape criticism for playing it safe. The enemy responds and after clearing our 100% zerg wave they rek us. FYI I had a 8-14-6 line Varian and Gul Dan were combined 2-20 I know I look at the map all day but being able to effectively communicate to your team your intentions is another matter.
Exactly this. I'm trying to check my minimap as often as I can and to not only act accordingly to it myself but also to ping for my team members (e.g. to warn them about incoming threat or simply to announce where help is needed) if I notice that they might not be paying full attention. At times, it comes as being useful but in a lot of the cases it ends up being pretty much an useless effort because people simply don't care.
They could be excused in one case tho: if your team was behind in exp as far as a talent tier, then it's urgent to have all lanes soaked. I know this aspect could be a little too obvious, just haven't seen it in the description of your situation.
Even if they were before 2 levels in XP, going boss wouldn't have taken more than a single wave of minions. With 3 on the enemy team dead, it was objectively the correct decision to go boss. Boss pushes, gets structures, you get xp. Enemy team defends boss, you get beacons, get zerg wave, get xp. In a game like this were team-play matters more than personal skill, winning is mostly reliant on your team. Ofcourse paying attention to the minimap and not getting ganked to give the enemy team an advantage is good.
Also sometimes, if the rest of the team for some reason does not follow one's call for the objectively best play and this play's success is too much dependent on them following, one's best play might change to support whatever else they are doing instead of risking really unrecoverable throw. It's rather sad, but as they say, "if you can't stop it, go ahead and lead it".
@@elusive842I think its more awareness and ability to stop; tunnel visioning when you are solo laning or team fighting mid, *still*,(I'm still working on tunnel vision)and I've def noticed lack of awareness, all around. or lack of typing easy little phrases if you cant be in team voice chat...
I whole heartedly agree with this. For your avg player map awareness is more important than Tech imo. Once you become good at this you can pretty reliably estimate where the enemy is even if no one is showing on the map.
YES to this video. The more of these types of videos you can throw out the better. Everyone knows map awareness is helpful, but giving a tool/exercise to hone in on that skill is very helpful. I wouldn't mind a long, drawn out, way boring look at a slowed-down replay where you commented on your decision making :)
Brilliant Educational video. 10/10 should add to heros acadamy playlist. and you should totally make more quick tips like this. youve played more than your fair share of games. tips about the game in general or hero/class specific.
You know, this is also a useful tool for Starcraft players. Paying attention to the mini-map is vital to knowing what's going on within your vision, and training yourself to glance at the minimap is the difference between whether or not you see an enemy drop flit across the edge of your vision before it hits your base with a doom drop and wipes out your workers/production/flat-out-kills-you.
this is such an underrated aspect of heroes of the storm. this was not such a huge issue for me since I came from a starcraft background. check supply... macro at home... check the mini map... move army... rinse and repeat.
I came from SC2... and dota... Minimaps are ingrained in my soul now. But while bettering your own play is obviously good, the game is still so team-based that personal skill doesn't matter as much as it could.
I know this is an old video, but it still holds up. I was on a 10 game losing streak -swapping to different heroes all the time. The first time I used this, I won.
Grubby had an idea as well (though probably not as helpful as this) he said to imagine the mini map as your mirrors in your car, and naturally you should be learning to look every few seconds like you would in a car mirror and improve that way. Probably not as helpful as your tip but thought I would throw it out there.
Man, I literally just mentioned yesterday that it'd be sensible to write a python script to remind me to look at the map....and then boom, I found this. Thanks!
aside from learning map awareness from playing abathur to level 14 and some vikings like others as well, i also just took my experience from driving and looking in my mirrors every few seconds to applying it in heroes as well
Ehhh no.. By no means is chromie one of the best heroes. Pally's still in plat, which has a lot of trash players who don't know how to counter. Alarak in HL is amaze, though.
Pally, looking healthier and more alive since being sober from Monster. Stick with it bro, your audience won't go anywhere, being healthy and happy are what really matter. Also, great video. Would love these more informational videos, they augment the information in your gameplay videos well.
So we can't download it right now because too many people have been downloading the file, but I saved the file to my google drive, made a copy, and then downloaded that. Just a LPT for anybody who wants to download the file but can't because Pally broke the Google Drive
+Oppranator So click on Pally's link, right? On the options button (beside whatever avatar you have for your Google account, the three dots) there's an option that says "Save to drive." After that you should see it on your drive, but you still won't be able to download it, so right click on the file, create a copy, and then download. On the other hand, he's updated the description with a dropbox link, so here you go www.dropbox.com/s/yj23thulzmcb59s/LOOK%20AT%20YOUR%20FUCKING%20MINI%20MAP.wav?dl=0
Here's the best part, now you can actually spam ping BEFORE you die because you're at least paying attention to who's actually coming with you instead of realizing why the hell Yrel is laning only after you lost the 3-4v5. And knowing that some maps you can afford to let enemy take obj while you have exp lead because you're also looking at the objective progress. Minimap=game awareness. Just an add up to the video tips.
Grerat Vid! I would like to see a Video like this about cleanse. I see so many supports taking talents that aren't useful when we are up against a stun comp
i will totally use that, today I was ganked 2 times while pushing the bottom lane with sylvanas at blackheart's bay just because i forgot to look at the mini map.
Thanks a lot for the video pally! i mean I kinda already learned this the hard way from aba but I think this something that even still I can work on! If you're interested in doing more of these I for one would really enjoy more learning content from you!!
Hey pally is there any chance could you make a "How to draft" video. A lot of games in lets say Diamond and beyond are won / lost at the champ select screen. Would love to hear your thoughts on the matter as I know you made it to master in one of your sessions and you have a fair bit of experience with Squadron. I'm sure it would help out a lot of new and even experienced players out there. Thanks in advance :)
Honestly, I've tried map awareness things like this, but it just hasn't worked. I just end up tuning it out no matter how loud it is. So, what I had to do was always have it in my head to look at the minimap, because that's the only way my map awareness was going to improve. And it did. For instance, I've been playing a good bit of League lately, and I've been using my minimap tons to see where the enemy jungler is, and the moment I see him, I just back up and recall. Now, of course, this also has to do with warding and stuff, because that provides vision, but vision is useless if you can't use it, so the same basic premise still stands.
I just want to ask. do ppl in rank play like in quick match ? I played quick match and its always someone who never folow the team, just do what r they please, and in the end we end up with 4vs5 team fight and has been wiped out ... and then he show up later and being killed too. If I lucky, enemy team will also have someone like that and we can win the important team fight and win the game, but end up with 50% of my game is too much seriously .
Damn.. I knew that many people still don't use the goddamn map,.. but that this number must be so nut that Pally have to do a simply reminder video how to not suck at it.. priceless!
Back in beta i used to play super shwasted, but I would play bot games as nova because the tunnel vision is all to real. BUT! during my shwasted state I would force myself to tunnel vision on the minimap. Now its like a muscle memory, almost like what they teach you in driving class, glance at this and glance at that every few seconds just to make sure.
Actually, this is no different from defense driving training, where they drill you to check your mirrors every 6 seconds instead of fixating on what's in front of you.
Yeah, but what happend when the problem are your teammates and not you??? I can't posses their keyboard to make them play good, I can't text them is QM nobody listen to anyone there. What can I do?
Play more games. If you games then eventually the only meaningful variable that is changing, is you. If you're good enough to rise through the ranks then you simply will. There WILL be games that are wastes of time, but overall, you'll be the deciding factor in climbing if you play enough.
One of the things I love Pally for is when he says he's got one easy trick he spends like 3 minutes explaining the easy trick and what it helps you with instead of going on and on about unnecessary shit for fifteen like some other youtubers. *bleep*
All I do is look at the minimap. What I never see happening, is my shitty team mates, move up to me and protecting me, because I am no women and obv. can't multitask and move and/or defend my position while scouting the minimap.... if only they were any good...
"Ladder climbers HATE him! One easy, simple trick to improve your hots play!"
Should have made the sound the iconic "HEY!" Pally scream.
....
........
HEY!
Vik Ing holy shit! best idea ever, for real!
we need this comment to be seen by pally, everybody give this man a thumbs up
Sent a screenshot of this comment to him on twitter, hopefully he sees one of these!
Vik Ing All we would squirt like every 6 >///< (notice me pally sempai)
Vik Ing he liked my tweet with the screenshot! this is not a drill
One Trick to Massively Improve?
It starts with an R, and ends with -ain of Destruction.
Can't stop won't stop
Do I need a $89.99 minimap subscription for the sound to work?
Quinn Griffin I think it's actually $420.69 for a year
Brett Bell oh my! where do you order discount cards ?????????,?

I work at a campus help desk. That beep is the same one we use for incoming chat requests....this was a panic-inducing video.
Thank you so much Pally, this thing makes it so much easier because it yells at me every 6 seconds, but his still subtle enough to not be a endurance when I'm in team fights.
Added a second download link because we broke google drive for the day.
here i am 7 years later back for this exact same sound file. thank you!!

Great as always! watching more of your HotS videos lately made me come back to the game.
"LOOK AT YOUR FUCKING MINIMAP"
lmao
Can you make a version where its a recorder tune instead of a beep?
can you do it? it's not that hard ...
but it won't be Pallytime's recorder doot.
true to dat
Man, I literally just mentioned yesterday that it'd be sensible to write a python script to remind me to look at the map....and then boom, I found this. Thanks!
aside from learning map awareness from playing abathur to level 14 and some vikings like others as well, i also just took my experience from driving and looking in my mirrors every few seconds to applying it in heroes as well
Hey Pally, I see that you have finally embraced the true path of playing Alarak and Chromie. 2 of the best damn heroes in this game.
Ehhh no.. By no means is chromie one of the best heroes. Pally's still in plat, which has a lot of trash players who don't know how to counter. Alarak in HL is amaze, though.

@Michael Ruibal Yeah, that's what I meant. Apologies if it was a little misleading. Also, look at your fucking mini map.
SalTehCheese how to you not be able to download it, but can save it to drive? Where's the logic in that?

This is completely the opposite of Witcher 3 where you solely stare at the mini-map.
then you can get the beep to look at the game instead of the minimap :D
Practicing team participation is also needed ESPECIALLY in quick match, where barely participation happen.

question.... how to see crumpled enemies on the minimap ? because icon is over each other
Just made my own, except it's the "Hey!" part of Navi saying "Hey, listen!" from ocarina of time.
I just want to ask. do ppl in rank play like in quick match ? Yo I tried this and it became white noise real fast. Any attempt to continue heeding it after a mere 5 minutes just ended up throwing me off.
Back in beta i used to play super shwasted, but I would play bot games as nova because the tunnel vision is all to real. BUT! during my shwasted state I would force myself to tunnel vision on the minimap. Ive heard there are also websites with minimap timers that you can use. But this is fine as well i guess
I used to do this type of thing when trying to get better at starcraft. It works really well guys. Would recomend to friend.
thanks pally you have helped me become a much better player I really appreciate it!
Gul'dan named "WhaTheDehaka" is the real MVP of this video.
Ok, now i need a trick to help me detect stealth heroes' shimmer. Ty :D
Wow grats on climbing. Looks like Alarak is paying off.
Great idea. Thanks for the link!
it really would be fun if Pally can make the "HEY" version lol
find your vids really helpful. As an abathur player this should help a ton, thanks.
this is awesome pally, thanks :D
could you do a video on overextension and pushing vs soaking? Just saw someone's video and got cancer.
There's timers on youtube I've used, though eventually my brain started to ignore them.
It nonetheless helped.
track name "LOOK AT YOUR FUCKING MINI MAP"
oh man, I was expecting Pally to just hit ALT F4 after saying "I have a trick to make Hots better"
Actually, this is no different from defense driving training, where they drill you to check your mirrors every 6 seconds instead of fixating on what's in front of you.
instead of making a download you could just make a 10hour video that beeps every six or so seconds and then have people play it while they game
lol
you can repeat youtube videos. No need to upload a horrendous 10h video.
Yargolocus do you even sarcasm bro? :D
Play alot with my laptop and I really hope you could scale the map a bit bigger.
gj pally, this will help a lot of people!
The file is not available, too many requests :(
It would help way much more if we could just increase the map size :( on a 27 inches, i find the map too small !
awesome idea, thanks for spreading the word! *beepsaway*
Cant access it says too many people have downloaded it :(
Yeah, but what happend when the problem are your teammates and not you??? I can't posses their keyboard to make them play good, I can't text them is QM nobody listen to anyone there. What can I do?
When you've done everything that can be done, you continue to do what you can.
Play more games. If you games then eventually the only meaningful variable that is changing, is you. If you're good enough to rise through the ranks then you simply will. There WILL be games that are wastes of time, but overall, you'll be the deciding factor in climbing if you play enough.
"map doctors hate him, with this one easy trick...."
Sounds like a good idea. However my computer is broken so I can't even play HOTS to test it out :(
Do you pick at the minimap tho when teamfighting?
If you have NodeJS installed, you can run it from terminal by opening the REPL and entering "setInterval(() => console.log('\x07'), 6000);"
whos better valeera or abathur
Hmm, 6 seconds? that's the same time as looking in your mirror's while driving. :D
Holy crap he actually did it
That diablo could have charged a minion before u silence him, i guess.
Would he be able to do it? Or is diablo unable to click on minions?
You're able to charge minions. He also could've just dodged it. But bad players are bad.
this is amazing
Thanks,Pally!
Doesn't work :( can't download :(
One of the things I love Pally for is when he says he's got one easy trick he spends like 3 minutes explaining the easy trick and what it helps you with instead of going on and on about unnecessary shit for fifteen like some other youtubers. *bleep*
i tough map awareness is the core mechanic for the game, how does people even get in ranked leagues without map awareness?
LISTEN TO THIS MAN!
last time i came this early my girl left me
she left cuz you came early
Last time I'm my girl I came to the left.
last time I`ve read this comment it was 2014
Just play abathur and the lost vikings to level 10 and i guarantee you'll be looking at the minimap more than the actual screen when you're done!
i have also a good idea just play invis heroes u need to look on your mini map all time to get kills
Get a notice from google that to many people have seen or downloadet this file recently.
Nice MFPT. Thanks brew!
this video made me think it was already april first
as i read wisp i imagine it was Navy from zelda telling me to look lol
gracias pally, and congrats for desintoxication
my starcraft past made my mini map looking easy to do just now i need to do it a little bet more
"Most hero league wins: Alarak"
Pallytime the Highlord.
Thanks Pally!
who do you main
Simple, but effective trick!
This video was shades of Kripperino
All I do is look at the minimap. What I never see happening, is my shitty team mates, move up to me and protecting me, because I am no women and obv. can't multitask and move and/or defend my position while scouting the minimap.... if only they were any good...
thanks alot pally!!
I'm going to use this to remind myself to drink water while playing WOW
thx MfPallytime it actually works for me
but do pro's hate you?
thats the classic "millionares hate him! get ritch with one easy trick" thing.
