Late 17th century French Antique/Period Furniture: Monumental Walnut Armoire from Périgord!

Part of a series on French armoires, this video discusses an iconic example of luxury furniture made in the southwestern French region of Périgord circa 1690-1700. The walnut period piece is equivalent to multiple published examples including one classified a French historic monument, conserved in the château de Monbazillac.
This imposing armoire shows the height of the development of Louis XIV style in this region which due to its remoteness remained very loyal to this style even when other departments had moved on. Thus in the repertoire of French provincial furniture (regional masterpieces here), this armoire is not only emblematic of Périgord but of this style in general as well.
As usual, these videos shed light on the difference between preindustrial period pieces and “antiques.” The most memorable examples of period furniture are collectible and beautiful artifacts that generally date from the 1500s to the year 1840, from when furniture was most readily made as an art form.

Your scholarship is refreshing. I adore all things French in the 17th -18th century decorative arts. I have lamented that young Americans seem to have abandon or forgotten artistic esthetic and true beauty. You have made my doubts vanish and you restore my hopes that connoisseurship might live a while longer in the American psyche.
