I saw them live twice, and I have never seen such passion on stage. He made me feel every single word that left his lips, I honestly don't even know what he's singing about. It just hits your face like a rock.
This band has one of the most unique sounds of all time. I really hope when it's all said and done they get the recognition they deserve. Very underrated group.
I fell in love with Future Islands when I saw the Late Night w/ David Letterman performance. Absolutely top notch performance. Truly one of the most extraordinary things I've seen.
Just seen this band live in Middlesbrough town hall …I’ll never forget it ..what a fantastic experience…the singer puts heart and soul into his performances…they are brilliant! ❤️
i like how he says 'a scene from my life, last summer' i have never heard such a thing put that way, makes me miss the musician & artist friends of my past & communications with them, conversations were beautifully intoxicating... those sweet confections of ideas uniquely expressed 🖤🖤🖤
"As processions fade, New hearts doubt. But you are Golden and no one questions it. But who you fake and how you sound, Asks the best of men To share your sentiment" .....there is no other band like Future Islands, best synth melodies and beautiful poetic lyrics... passionate and genuine performances always. My favorite band. Can't wait for their new album in October....online concert as well.
Never heard of them before but I just added their whole discography on Spotify after watching this. Love how honest the leads voice is and how drama fiilled the synths are. Thanks again, NPR!
Man, William's look changed so much between this TDC and the later one, I thought they'd had a new bass player. :) These guys have become my new obsession. truly emotive and moving songs that reach almost religious intensity when seen live.
Oh, how I love this band, every performance feels so raw and heartfelt. For the ones just discovering this band, do yourselves a favor and check their full KEXP live session. Simply beautiful ❤️
This is appropriate timing at least since Future Islands have been releasing new songs recently, so any fans definitely be sure to check out their youtube :)
My heart always burst open. Thanks always garret and Sam, and my bass friend… William, saw y’all in my dreams once William and garret drove me to hang on chandelier with Sam, ahah, what a dream. I try not to now. Cool then though. Hope y’all get it real big y’all
Love seeing how divisive the comments are on Future Islands videos. This is by no means their best performance but they are an astounding band. Definitely marmite though.
There brilliant live, I've seen them twice and there just awesome! Seasons ( waiting on you ) made them really get noticed. Check em doing it on Jools Holland and David Letterman
@@romanmarshall602 Well obviously. Just saying that the sound/ tone of his voice and his animated/emotional performance of every word is broadway like.
1 month later. They saved my life again, originally it was 4 years ago. Such a dark night, I heard him say I could dance. And my pathetic room was dance floor. Still pathetic but he still saves me
Love love love Future Islands. Even though they’ve hit it relatively big in recent years they still scare normies away as evidenced by some of these comments, and that’s just fine
whoa. watching past Future Islands in the present is a trip.
Today was a good day.
Really watching anything online is a trip. We should be in a cave somewhere trying to figure out how to eat walnuts, tbh.
i remember them from my past
“Present Islands”
Past Islands
Sam sings every lyric as if it's the first time. His delivery is impeccable. Truly an original sound! Bravo!!

Exactly!!!
Saw them in Jersey City he blew the roof off the place the guy is incredible

this performance is a gentle reminder that vocals is also an instrument.

Great comment

The growl, that Herring growl, it makes you feel things.

For a minute I read that wrong and thought "why were they living in Middlesbrough town hall?"

I love Future Islands so much. They're so amazing live. I would love to see another NPR show from them!

Synth player looking like he’s buttering bagels back there or something
Gave me a good little chuckle.. thank you friend
😂now I'm going to be imagining the people making my bagels are laying down some buttery synth
He's making the track extra smooth
Nah he's using cream cheese
Believe that may be a shmear

Beautiful band, Sam Herring is an amazing lyricist, one of a kind singer. 'Singles' is a great album to start :)
Ah, and check their full KEXP live session. It's much better than this one
Brace yourself.

It's 2:30 AM here. I'm wondering why I clicked on this. Waaay too much. I'm switching channels. 2011? Come ON, NPR.
This band really makes me feel like I could fist fight the ghosts I see flying outside my window. This is courage music.
This is phantasmagorically accurate
@@Sevaleries phanta...what?
That was literally the video I watched before this
My god you nailed it I feel so much pain leaving my soul listening to that. Unbelievable voice
Wonderfully put. ❤
Saw them live at Rock City, Nottingham last year..
phenomenal! Hope to see them again soon❤
Sam is probably the most underrated singer I’ve ever heard. Such a great voice that so many don’t know unfortunately
I can't work out if your being ironic. Are you being ironic?
@@WhatSoEverThingsAreLovely 2 years ago? Idk lol
@@jackrabin6501 ... its just you just said he had a good voice & I don't know if you were being ironic or did you REALLY think he had a good voice!!
I met Sam Herring in the street in Inverness. He was a cool guy. As a performer he’s stand out. Superb
I will see them next month for the first time, Im happy!

Incredible then. Incredible today!
I love everything about this band. They are unique.
Wow I’m so impressed by this performance! Greg voice I love it so much! So emotional
A poet who sings from his heart. 🙂
Sam Herring (the singer) also has a hip hop album under the moniker Hemlock Ernst, he’s so talented in everything he does
Thanks for this, you made my day
Oooo thanks for the information!
Wow, great suggestion. Just added this album to my playlist.
Where i knew him first. Guy is deep love it.
@@philipptanner9457 what a treat to find him as hemlock first!
Pure raw poetry, I love Sam's delivery ❤
I remember seeing this on the podcast in 2011 and looked for it on youtube but couldn't find it. Thx for getting this up. A great performance.
Sublime.... the most beautiful humans I've ever seen make music. Every song is beautiful & relevant.x thank you.xx
Amo con mi vida a Future Islands, nadie transmite como Sam en su voz y acting...
Incredible voice. Unrivalled.
When I first heard future islands, I thought the singer was an old man. I love them!
Please bring them back to tiny desk ❤️
they just did!
@@impendio going to check it out. Thank you
Limmy brought me here
Me too 😂😂
And me.
Worth it
Finally. Always a delight to see Samuel. Wonderful.
Like 17th century British navel captain, singing to his last remaining crew members, mad from drinking salt water.
They took this from us, never forget Sam, or y’all guys I forget but been in art.
Limmy brought me here. 😂

It’s crazy how young he sounds compared to now
Its funny when I listen to Future Islands my terrible mood and feeling of crying goes away, maybe some happy tears.

It's like he should be on Broadway singing les mis or something? So great.
That would be a waste of his talent
@@romanmarshall602 Well obviously. Just saying that the sound/ tone of his voice and his animated/emotional performance of every word is broadway like.
I would watch him do a one man play that lasts four hours with 100 different characters.
He would be amazing on broadway
No he's not an actor. He's showing us his real self
You seriously were always that one, thanks dude
2022 y todavía vuelvo acá💘
Uhhhhh. Just beyond great.
Love this band.

If Russell Crowe and Jack Black somehow had a son together. I love his voice and expressiveness though.
maybe a touch of nicholson as well.
what a performance and Sam doesnt need to use his knees!
This is a real Singer
Can't wait for them to do this again after the album dropped (As Long As You Are -- Oct 9th!!)

Love u guys
Nice just started listening to them last year good music
You can’t make someone love you
Wow, 2011 and only uploaded just now, what else do you have in stock that's not been released NPR?
Since they write that some of their ”earliest concerts never made it to UA-cam”, I would think most of them still are uploaded on their site
I like how he sings in a different key from what the band's playing.
good poetry! wow
Is this for real?

Why does he sound British when he sings?
Cause he can
Morrisey.
I'm British and I always assumed he was British 🤔
Not hearing it my friend
Yeah it takes a bit of getting over. Inspired by UK synth/electropop/ Oscar Wilde !
Boiled vegetables!
The singer is worth waiting for, hilarious! He should do Shakespearean theater.
