One of several great JVC-built units Zenith introduced in 1987. Zenith & JVC also had hi-fi versions of this machine. This is the first time I had seen or heard a sideways in motion though. This sounds just like the VRD100 we used to have. I never knew the transmission system was the same. I'm sure it also has the same rewind and fast-forward mechanism as well. The 3-speed "revving" sound was unique. Even more rare are the 2 Zenith vertical VCRs. Both towers, of which, loaded sideways as well. I believe those machines were also made by JVC, but unique to the Zenith moniker. In fact, the VRD530HF was their top-of-the-line from this era.
heres a tip, if you have a Zenith/JVC VCR that will re-wind and all, but will not play, it is because the gears seize up. all you have to do is lubricate them and it will work like new again. you probably knew that already, but I like to share this info for anybody who might need it.
The drive belt is actually worn out and slipping a bit, so the first time it tries to load the tape around the heads, it fails. Otherwise, works like new.
Wow I've never seen one that loads that way!
