- The Outdoor Research Helium ii jacket comes highly recommended by many thru-hiker's. So what's the scoop on this jacket and how did it perform on the AT for me?

Great honest review! Shows pluses, minuses.. love it!
Thanks for the review as I was looking at this jacket once in a while.
One thing that you can say about Outdoor Research is their customer service / warranty.
Outstanding..!
+Brazillian Bully 👍
I have this jacket and love it.
I have this jacket and love it. I've used it for over a year now and it is perfect for backpacking here in England. It is great for layering or by itself and very good quality. I would buy it again!
+Grizzly Walford Thanks for your input. I agree!
Great jacket and even better company.
i think a mesh or some sort of liner is the only way to get breath-ability in a rain jacket. plus side to the liner is it also holds heat in cool weather and helps you dry a little in wet
Nice review bud
I was considering selling my un-used Zpacks vertice jacket and pants for the Helium 2 and a sil nylon rain kilt. I could fetch $450+ Australian $ for the set tomorrow. But after hearing about the lack of breathability and waterproofness on the Helium, and reading about the excellent breathability and waterproofness on the Vertice kit, I've decided to skip one or two more bills and start using the Vertice set. I'm afraid of tearing it up in our bushland though. Oh well there's always Tenacious Tape 😀
Thanks for PTO I thought it was motorcycle orientated I have to Frogg togg rain suits neither one of mine work just hope it will save some money looking for a good motorcycle rain gear that works
Hey. Don`t you think there are better options on the market right now ? This jacket is about 6 years old I think. I think there are more breathable light jackets on the market... or a bit heavier.... I don`t think it is a good idea to go into a bit older gear....
Thank you for the review. In regards to your Helium II, did you reproof the DWR during your thru-hike? Is the failed zipper, on the 2015 Helium, a coil zipper or a Vislon Zipper? Have you noticed what the zipper is on the new Helium (coil or Vislon)?
+MRo My OR helium was a 2015 model that they phased out so I got an excellent deal on it. It was a coil. I have no clue what the new ones have but I'll let you know when I get it. I just mailed my old jacket today so I should get the new one in 2-3 weeks according to OR. I did not reproof it
Hi sweet channel ☺ Keep it up!
Thanks for great review Bigfoot!
Just curious if you have any comments/experience on the OR Helium HD jacket by chance, at least anyone else commenting on the trail about that jacket?
+Asanka Meththa I do not have any exp with that jacket nor have I heard any reviews about it that I can remember. Sorry
Cool
So, it leaks, doesn't breath, and costs $158.00..... hmmm...what's the cost of fashion?
I intend to hike the AT at the end of February 2018. I have a Helly Hansen rain jacket and a lighter Marmot ether driclime hoody weighing in at 8.3 ounces. Is the latter the equivalent of the OR Helium II, and will it stand up to the weather in February?
+robert wood The Marmot ether is made for doing some trail running or hiking in mild weather conditions. I believe it is water resistant not water proof. Marmot would be okay for Summer months on the AT, probably not February. If you get some cold wet days it would not perform like the OR which is what my concern would be. The HH rain jacket would be fine.
Many thanks - appreciated
robert wood are you hiking right now lol?
Ive always found it kinda funny about the people that stress over saving ounces on their gear when they would be better served loosing 10 to 15 lbs off their body weight
+Bryan Owen Lighter the pack the more enjoyable my hiking experience is. Don't think I have ever stressed a day in my life about cutting oz's off. I like a good healthy balance of comfort and safety but with nothing more than what I really need.
I give up. What is FKT?

Thanks, I can sleep now, :) Really, thanks.
Nothing that matters
Made for skinny people who don't even lift! I bought a large on Massdrop and it's so tight that I can hardly zip it. Waist is fine but chest is so tight.
For real
Persperate. Lol.
