2:00 The look on Vito’s face says it all. He knows Michael can handle it. He’s always known Michael could handle it. He just never wanted him to have to.
When Michael moves his father’s bed in the hospital and Vito opens his eyes slightly, you can see him crying. He knew he was now involved. The next time we see him the first thing he asks is “Where’s Michael?”

@@thelevisullivan Ih think that as well, but both ocasions be true.
One thing really interesting to note is both characters establish their destiny with a murder. Michael by killing the Captain and Sollozzo and Vito killing Fanucci.
@@ken-yo2hzVito was sick and recovering. I don’t think he was aware as to why his son was ACTUALLY there; more than likely assumingely so he would assume Michael is just there to visit him. He wouldn’t have been able to know what was happening as no one else BUT Michael at that point knew what was happening until Michael makes a phone call.

And, in the end, he died alone. *Powerless.* No friends, no family, no more influencing. No one around anymore. Tragic, really.

Favourite scene from the movie, we see a father and son moment, beautifully scripted and of-course very well acted by Pacino & Brando. Two of the GREATEST ACTORS, EVER.

This scene sums up The Godfather very well, we see the most important characters, Vito and Michael, father and son, both talking about rasing family and the menaces that were about to come, Vito says what he though about his sons and his life and that how he dosen't regret it because he never wanted to dance on the strings on powerful people (maybe a reference on The Godfather's logo, the puppeteer's hand) in the end he wanted Michael to have a responsible life being a kind of dipolmatic and mostly to be respected but Michael gave his soul and respect to his father so much that he maybe wanted to be like him, but in the end he couldn't because he knew how to maintain power and wealth, but not the most important thing, which was the family.
This is acting of the highest quality...should be studied in drama schools...when Vito just after "the funny papers" he, very briefly, goes into himself...mbe back to himself reading the funny papers or his kids reading them...a sublime moment in a sublime scene in a sublimely acted film...it also give the lie to Brando's oft repeated disdain for acting...someone who is supposed to be disdainful about acting doesn't bother to go that far...that brief moment isn't in the script!...but it shows an actor totally 'in the moment'...and both actors are at the top of their game.....just brilliant and a joy to watch.

Actually he was reading the cue card hanging in the tree but it's Brando so he still pulls it off brilliantly.

Coppola realized he didn't have a scene where Vito and Michael talk, just father and son so he asked Robert Towne to write one
They did have couple of scenes together but they were removed from the film.
Like when they went to the hospital to visit Genco.
And when Michael returned home from Sicily and asked Vito on what to do about Sonny and Sicily.
As simple as it is, it's one the best scenes in history

See how the camera stays on Vito even when Mike says “it’s good for you, pop”. There’s an undercurrent of tension despite of all this ‘wine’ talk.
One of the best scenes ever enacted.
Each and every frame is beautiful. The colors, composition, that bicycle in the background, lighting. Makes me wanna watch the movie again.

Vito is not a villain. He don't hunt innocents. In underworld, his decisions are controlled ultimately by ruthless men

@@GigiDAmico This was a comment I made months ago. Now I'm realizing, he was just the most good among a bunch of bad people. But he wanted to gain legitimacy(which his son Michael too wanted). So wasn't he more of a victim than a villain?
Mafia in general is bad. But in Godfather, Mafia as the whole wasn't the center point. It was the Corleones(especially Michael Corleone)

Fredo was weak, Sonny was quick tempered...Michael was smart and ruthless, not because he liked to be...because he had to be.
Worst part is Michael was the most sacred to Vito that's what makes his development more tragic
In the end tho he was able to keep the family together. He was not as good as his father
@Foldy. Michael was the right son to take over from his father as the don of the Corleone family. The other two sons had the negative points you mentioned.
The montage at the end gave me chills, showed how he turned from a naive young gentleman to the cold Mafia don.

Al Pacino is my favorite actor of all-time
Not only was he a great, powerful and charismatic Don, Vito was also a brilliant mentor, advisor (consigliere) and father to his son who became a very different type of Don.

This is the greatest scene in hollywood and next is the heat cafe..God hollywood had some good actors
Michael has one of the best character arcs ever in my opinion. He seems like among the very last people in the Corleone family to succeed Vito, but of course due to some of the best character development in cinema history, his transformation is absolutely believable! Michael would end up being far colder than his father, and that’s why Michael was more feared, but less respected.
Both were quite handsome when they were young.
Vintage stuff. No matter what reason Jack Nicholson or Robert deNiro give : they both know 'I missed out here'. This scene .. timeless reel which became cinematic history. Scene such this with Brando ....epic. Al got it.
Beautifully acted. Just great how Coppala directed Brando and Pacino, to get you all to love criminals and murderers. To get you to love their way of life and desire to be just like them.

Wow I can't believe this film is 50 years old
Brando in this scene is just on another level, his acting between 1:18-1:45 is just understated, pitch perfect naturalism.
Just found out behind the scenes that, when Marlon Brando sat on the other chair, he was reading his script through a chalkboard for the rest of the scene lol. FFC said he didn't want to memorize the script.

Whenever I watch this scene I remember the scene in Godfather 2 where young Vito holds his infant Michael and tells him how much he loves him. So poignant.

50 years masterpiece of cinema
One of the most fascinating characters in film. I don't see Marlon Brando, only Vito Corleone. He also wore some of the coolest suits in the saga lol. Nothing overstated. Man I love this movie, and I love Vito.
The line cards hanging in the tree helped elevate this moment to Oscar level performance

the screenplay, the choreography, the delivery of the dialogues and all is just a masterpiece in this movie u can watch again and again and still wouldnt get tired of this movie. I like fast paced movies but never knew this movie which is quite slow at times would make me understand so many aspects of a movie like writing, scripts, the timing. Movie making at its finest .

I love how Michael just sits there and listens to his father. He doesn't say much other than answer his questions. His father was acting as the war time consigliere the Corleone family needed, giving his son advice on not being careless and identifying the rat in his camp (who happened to be his father's longtime friend and trusted lieutenant, Tessio).
I have no doubt in my mind that Vito's unexpected passing was a major blow to Michael's plans regarding his father's counseling.
In my opinion, I think that is one reason why he only continued to do business with those with whom his father had had a good relationship and made Clemenza his unofficial underboss and consiglere.
While he learned a lot from his father over his lifetime, Cosa Nostra was still a new world to him, and he needed someone who he could trust but also had extensive experience. Clemenza was the best option.

What's lovely here is that even though Don is retired and all he wants is to spend the last years of his life away from his businesses and the mafia endeavours,he still advises his son out of fear of losing him.The love he has for Michael overcomes his need for some relaxement,he doesn't want to see him end up like Sonny,so he repeats things that he has already said, so he can be sure that Michael will be safe from any outside threats.This scene perfectly portrtays the endless love a father has for his sons.

Build Don Vito as a great men, then build Michael as a strong men, then put them together on a table. Both of them talking about bussiness, but in a different way, which cause the different between their fate. The music, the sound design, the tone, the acting, the diglogue, the meaning, ...

Marlon Brando kept looking to his left cause he didn't know his lines, which someone held flash cards.
It works beautifully in this scene cause it gives Vito the look of someone with regret and remorse, like he's ashamed of himself to look at his son.
That is so true he never wanted this life for Michael.. just imagine if Michael didn't go into this kind of life his daughter would have never got killed in the third film..
And he would still be married.....even more kids....maybe.
@@healthycigarettes5088 all of that is very true but the most important detail is he would have never had to witness his daughter being shot in such a brutal way after all deaths the reason why he went back to Italy and died alone because his Mafia life destroyed everything that he loved and cared about. That's probably also a reason why his father never wanted him to get into the family business because he knew from personal experience That's How It Ends that's how it always happens. It's the same example for Sons of Anarchy in terms of John teller and Jax Teller their life ended the same way.
