i loved this game, best new thing that this game does is not waste your time. i love that your characters are healed or brought back to life full health after every battle.. also love the items are just usable turns every battle and you don't have to mess with item inventory.. those little things are now things i want in every jrpg!
The game's on sale right now on the E-shop for three bucks. I picked it up on a random whim, and boy I wish I saw your review earlier, cause I would have gotten it much sooner. Worth every penny. Thank you again for the review man.
Always enjoy your videos dude. Looking for something to scratch the Chrono Trigger itch. Came across this game and then saw you reviewed it!! Definitely gonna give it a try after your review. Much appreciated. 👍
Zeboyd, the makers, always have very interesting battle systems. And they come up with a new one for every game! On the harder difficulty levels they play more like puzzle games.
Console Wars please do snes this company games has a formula they run with all their games but they always find a way to switch things up and revamp things. I believe the story was set up that way for its sequel but we will see best 10 bucks ive spent yet and good rpgs are rare today
Gonna have to give this one a try. BTW If you want something more "fleshed out", check out Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky". It feels like a Squaresoft game circa 1996, but it's so much bigger.
It's easy to question how something sounds. Might be to do with what one has grown up with. Say someone who had access to the Turbografx CD & Sega CD had exposure to CD quality audio with sprite work, but each to their own.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I guess maybe it doesn't need to be said, but this game has tremendous appeal for fans of over the top Sci-Fi anime. Like you said, Cowboy Beebop vibe. So just for that audio-visual style alone, I think it stands out. Of course, I got it on PSN, and rarely buy or play games on Steam, so I don't know just how saturated that store is with stuff like this. But I thought it was a gem, even if on the short side.
Unfortunately, since my steam library continues to grow, and because I waste so much time watching UA-cam, I only have time for the best of the best games!
Hey, SNES drunk, can you review Tooth & Tail? It's a real-time strategy game that focuses on the Russian Revolution. It came out a few weeks ago on Good Old Games and Steam.
The 2nd half of the game the CT characters do get developed but it's optional sidequest. The world gets more developed than anything now that I think about it. As do some villains.
Bought this awhile back, just finished it today, it is basically like Mass Effect 1 + Chrono Trigger and a lot of fun but once you get to Nuluup the game concludes far too fast I feel; still a lot of fun. Completed it in about 8.5 hrs.
Problem I had with it was its size. If something is taking up 6 GB, I expect it to have a much more complex story. That's bigger than Playstation RPGs, only it feels like the developers actually had the limitations of a twenty-five year old cart.
I played this game because someone told me it was "the next Chrono Trigger." That definitely set my expectations too high and I was disappointed as a result. It is still a good game, though. I just wish he hadn't told me that
Could they have thought of a worse title though. Hmmmmm. Yeah, I think we should call our awesome new RPG game "Space Planet Lady". That oughtta knock 'em dead!
I wouldn't say that Undertale or Stardew Valley do "new" things. One takes it's "Talk" mechanic straight from SMT, and the other is Rune Factory with worse dungeons and better farming.
I remember when I first played Undertail and soon after seeing the combat mechanic I was reminded of Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars. While Undertail did it in a very interesting way, the basic premise of physically moving around to avoid enemy attacks was done in FoM. Similarly attacking enemies required some effort, although I'd say attack ore closely feels like Resident Evil Gaiden
What are some examples of games where you DID have to mute the game during the battle? FF6 is my favorite game of all time, but I hate that battle music.
Lufia and the Fortress of Doom is the first one that comes to mind. More recently for me there was Paladin's Quest, a good track on its own but good god that got irritating hearing it 30+ times an hour. Mario RPG's got annoying after a while too. I wish more RPGs did what Earthbound did and had multiple random battle themes
Whoa really? I could listen to that all day. Actually I did more then a few times ;) But the soundtrack to the Megadrive version of Phantasy Star pisses me off to no end. I stopped playing the game over it.
Yeah, to each their own. I just think it is, by a wide margin, the worst FF battle theme. Maybe it's just because it's less... melodic than other FF songs? I don't know enough about music to talk about this intelligently.
That's fine: while college courses in music theory might help you _express_ your feelings about a piece better it isn't required to simply feel a certain way about music. I think if such feelings had to be rationalized I'd say that FF6 introduces a shift in style that moved away from songs that one could imagine being orchestrated old school style to songs better heard as if they where rock anthems , in which FF7 followed suit as far as I can recall. It works for FF7 a bit more because of the different setting (steam punk and all that) but FF6 is very much still in a world reminiscent of the traditional fantasy of I-V. I can see people believing that it doesn't fit as well. After all, that's straight up a rocking-ass guitar riff being played in the background. Then again the same could be said of that rocking drumbeat that III had, but I don't see people holding III's soundtrack in high regard most of the time and the remake moved that around to sound closer to tone to I's and II's. So meh. I still love the track and honestly not sure how someone can dismiss the song entirely from a personal viewpoint but like I logical get it.
Have you done a Timespinner review? It looks so retro but the political story injected into it has made me hold off from picking it up despite the reviews praising the gameplay and pixel art. I got this game a while back on a Switch Sale since I had it on my wishlist for years. I never thought it would come out because it was taking forever. Same thing for Shakedown Hawaii which was a great game but didn't keep me coming back to play after the story which I loved.
if you need a good warm up to this game, I highly recommend the developers previous game "Cathulu Saves the world" which helps establish the kind of tone to expect in the writing department.
So I may be alone on this, but the character design for that one male party member with the glasses sticks out like a sore thumb. You’ve got all these cool cyberpunk/sci-fi characters right next to… the guy that works at your local GameStop 😂
I gave this game a shot and yeah, the story and dungeons are so bad and so rushed that they drag down the rest of it. A lot. Most of the dungeons are really bland and don't reward exploration despite their branching paths, and as they add more characters, it really showcases how nobody in the cast has any personality.
Yeah. It seems like their mistake was making sure it wasn't longer than a 12 hour playthrough, when it really needed to be a LOT longer. Everything needed to be more fleshed out and slowed down.
I copped this game for the switch, which is my retro games platform. One of the greatest pick ups I've had I a while. The battle system is so rewarding, don't sleep on this game!!!
Not a bad game! I eventually got bored after like 12 hours, and I stopped playing. The story is super generic, unfortunately characters have no depth whatsoever. The fighting system is good and manages to bring some new things (style) the graphics were cool, but you can tell it's an indie game, and last but not least the cut scenes which reminded me something pulled out of Sega CD era.
I couldn't finish this one. Sure the art style is there, the combat system is decent enough and it is challenging. The issue is that the writing just isn't there. The main character is a Mary Sue that would score more likeability points than Brie Larson. I just couldn't get into the characters and writing it was really lazy.
I started the game on 'heroine' difficulty and beat it with no deaths without ever figuring out the what the heck style does. Maybe I'll give it a replay someday on the highest difficulty, but the game seems really easy.
i loved this game, best new thing that this game does is not waste your time. i love that your characters are healed or brought back to life full health after every battle.. also love the items are just usable turns every battle and you don't have to mess with item inventory.. those little things are now things i want in every jrpg!

it's on sale in the eShop right now for only $2.99.

Looks like a mix of Chrono Trigger and Shadowrun, visual wise. Really looks cool. Great review!
Shadowrun Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star. Some of my favorite games ever. Just discovered this title.
I bought this game moths ago, but barely played it. Maybe I should give it another go. I'll keep my expectations in check.
Console Wars please do snes this company games has a formula they run with all their games but they always find a way to switch things up and revamp things. I believe the story was set up that way for its sequel but we will see best 10 bucks ive spent yet and good rpgs are rare today
The story is sadly a little lackluster but don't let that take away from the fact it completely awesome.
So ... the game does nothing new, but it does something new with the battle system? Did I miss something?
No, you didn't. I don't know why he wound up saying that. The battle system is the best part of the game, and the battle themes are killer.
It's new
Matthew Matlock Music is great ! Some funny lines ... it’s a great deal
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I guess maybe it doesn't need to be said, but this game has tremendous appeal for fans of over the top Sci-Fi anime. Like you said, Cowboy Beebop vibe. Picked this up on Switch for 2,50 euros, it's great !
Good combat explanation, some more modern games could use your explaining.
Unfortunately, since my steam library continues to grow, and because I waste so much time watching UA-cam, I only have time for the best of the best games!
So get this one then.
But he said it wasn't the best of the best.
Bro, if you liked Chrono Trigger, you will love this game.
Same here. Damn youtube and its cat videos.
This game is actually really good. I beat it after it came out
Hey, SNES drunk, can you review Tooth & Tail? It's a real-time strategy game that focuses on the Russian Revolution. It came out a few weeks ago on Good Old Games and Steam.
Such a nice game!
My request list is seriously about 40+ games long, so yeah I have no idea if/when I'll get to it
This is so Chrono Trigger.
Yeah, I think that's what the devs were counting on people saying. But the depth in the story/characters doesn't go near CT.
Fenrir The battle system definitely seems a lot different.
SNES drunk Chrono Triggers characters have depth? Sometimes I wonder if people actually played Chrono Trigger or just praising it...
gamerprince1999 it seems a lot better than Final Fantasy or similar trash
The 2nd half of the game the CT characters do get developed but it's optional sidequest. The world gets more developed than anything now that I think about it. As do some villains.
Huh, looks pretty dang cool. Might have to get it when there's a Steam sale.
Kinda reminds me of the modern RPG, Doom & Destiny; but set in a Shadowrun type environment.
Would you review Death Road to Canada?
I'd be interested to see what you think of "Citadale - The Legends Trilogy" which is more NES than SNES but still...
Bought this awhile back, just finished it today, it is basically like Mass Effect 1 + Chrono Trigger and a lot of fun but once you get to Nuluup the game concludes far too fast I feel; still a lot of fun. Completed it in about 8.5 hrs.
I just bought this on sale for 167 rubles on the Switch eshop. That's about 2.25 in US dollars.
Problem I had with it was its size. If something is taking up 6 GB, I expect it to have a much more complex story. That's bigger than Playstation RPGs, only it feels like the developers actually had the limitations of a twenty-five year old cart.
It's small like 2 GB but packaged as a 6 for psn not sure what it is for switch
I think he undersold the soundtrack to this game. Maybe its just my preference but this soundtrack was fucking dank. Chill as fuck
Cool review bro
It's a sega cd type rpg w chrono and earthbound mix
Good review
I played this game because someone told me it was "the next Chrono Trigger." That definitely set my expectations too high and I was disappointed as a result. It is still a good game, though. I just wish he hadn't told me that
Can you build in this ?
Could they have thought of a worse title though. Hmmmmm. Yeah, I think we should call our awesome new RPG game "Space Planet Lady". That oughtta knock 'em dead!
Should have a 16bit hit sound. It was better
Added it to vita love it
Ayeeee steam drunk! More of this pleez
WHEN WE GETTING CUPHEAD YA JABRONI
iunno
I wouldn't say that Undertale or Stardew Valley do "new" things. One takes it's "Talk" mechanic straight from SMT, and the other is Rune Factory with worse dungeons and better farming.
Or, you know...Harvest Moon, only better.
Harvest Moon after taking 999mg of growth hormone daily for a year
I remember when I first played Undertail and soon after seeing the combat mechanic I was reminded of Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars.

@@SNESdrunk You just gave me an idea for what I should do for the RPG that my friend and I are working on. I will make multiple battle themes.
I got confused
Looks like a Sci-Fi Chrono Trigger to me
nowonmetube Thats exactly what it plays like.
Have you done a Timespinner review? It looks so retro but the political story injected into it has made me hold off from picking it up despite the reviews praising the gameplay and pixel art. This isn't one of those RPGMaker games, is it?

How long is the game?
15-20 hours depending on how much you screw around
SNES drunk Thanks. Definitely gonna get this soon it looks really cool
SNES drunk Also, great review :)
It’s like $3 on Switch Store right now. Been playing for maybe an hour and it’s worth it for the price
"cash grab" lol. As if anyome would turn to indie game making to actually make money
#DrunkSquad Lol
Roll out... and fall over

This is giving me yiik self insert cringe
...Undertale is one of the worst cases of a "nostalgia bomb" that lacks substance. And other games have done far better with the 8-bit style.
I did not get the hype about that game. It was good, had some interesting combat but the rest of it didn't grab me.
first?
Just got this for $6 on switch. Looking forward to playing
Looking forward to it on the Switch!
It’s $1.50 now in the USA Eshop.
LaubowiebassMusic Copped that without thinking. Loving the Chrono Trigger gameplay so far.
Thanks, you just made me buy it.
Very interesting
I copped this game for the switch, which is my retro games platform. One of the greatest pick ups I've had I a while. The battle system is so rewarding, don't sleep on this game!!!

I started the game on 'heroine' difficulty and beat it with no deaths without ever figuring out the what the heck style does. Maybe I'll give it a replay someday on the highest difficulty, but the game seems really easy.
Hahaha "Turd-based roleplaying game".
lineal and short game
...and?
this looks dope! ANyone knows the engine where it was made on?
Unity
