As a trucker I liked the place. Good parking, play some Blackjack, get something to eat and sleep. Leave the next morning. Just a nice place where you could get in and out without the Vegas traffic congestion.
I remember back in the day there used to be a casino across the freeway that looked like a cruise ship, I think it was captain Jacks but I can't be sure.I think they imploded that one in 2002...
Ok as for the name of it as a gas station they were all over the edge of Los Angeles back in the day and always had the cheapest gas. And as for stopping there most people would stop on their way home not on their way to Vegas. When I was driving a big truck I would see mostly trucks there

I stayed there as a kid with my family. We were driving back home to the Bay Area from a road trip vacation (don’t remember where we visited) and my parents wanted to stop since it was getting late and the rooms were $19.99 per night. My brother and I were so excited since my dad got 2 adjoining rooms so my brother and I had our own room and beds! It was amazing! Our first order of business was to jump on the beds back and forth. We went and played in the arcade while our parents went to the casino and we were supposed to meet back at the room at a certain time. My mom won the most she ever had which was $800 and she only played the lower cost slots. It was great memories from my pre-teen family trip.
My memory of Jean,Nev. was having car overheating problems in the summer of 1969…there was a broken down repair shop there, and the mechanic was a terrific character…he made the necessary repairs and the repair bill was more than fair…it is good memories of that area…
I won more jackpots at the Goldstrike than any casino 🎰 in Vegas ! I was a maintenance man at the Stardust Casino before they leveled it out ,man I miss the old landmark Casinos,they were excellent.
We stayed there back in early 2012. My husband was working at the mountain pass mine. They were trying to reopen the mine before China went and flooded the market with all the rare earth minerals and caused the mine to shut back down. The company he was emyed through had the workers staying there. Originally they were staying at Buffalo Bill's in Primm. Then they got moved to the Goldstrike after the New Year. It was basically a place to stay. Nothing was open at the time. We went into Vegas to have dinner. I think staying in a motel 6 would have been more exciting. It wasn't long after that that we made the official move out to Vegas. The rooms wrre clean snd and all but the restaurants and buffet were all closed so we had to go all the way into Vegas just to eat.

I remember Nevada Landing closing one year, and I even have a photo of me standing in front of the abandoned giant boat building... The crazy thing is, I remember exactly 1 year after I took that photo, I went to Vegas again with my friends.... And we couldn't find any remnants of the building in just 1 year! Even the parking lots and the areas where the building once stood, the dessert sand blew over all of it, and there is like zero evidence that a building stood there at one point... I remember it only took 1 year for the Dessert to swallow back up....

I was a security officer at both Nevada landing and Gold Strike and yes everything has gone on in those rooms. I could tell you some stories. NOTE: We cleaned the trash out of the trashcans in the old cabin on McCullough Wilderness, thought you should know it was for you and everyone who RESPECTS the outdoors.
Used to stay here when Vegas was oversold. I loved the place. Pocketed a few jackpots and loved the real coin play. I really miss those times. This video was bitter sweet as it brought back some great memories but it is tough to watch an old friend pass on. Thanks for this video
It's a family-run company that used to be called Terrible Herbst. Originally an oil company, they have gas station/convenience stores in Arizona, where I first saw one. They're also in Utah and California, but the majority are in Nevada. They started buying casinos about 25 years ago.
I looked in on the comments to see if anyone knew if there was a relationship between the casino and the gas stations, so thanks for answering that. There was a Terrible Herbst in Santa Rosa, CA, in the '70s (at least). I always thought it was a strange name. Later, I found out that "herbst" is German for Autumn -- still sounds like a weird name for a gas station.
There used to be a terrible Herbst gas station, car wash, oil change type place on the corner of lake mead and rampart WAY back in the day when I worked at the albertsons that used to be there, there was a burger King basically next door to it

I remember the Gold Strike. We lived in Vegas in the 80’s. The Dunes was our favorite hang out. We’d spend all night there gambling, wandering around. Vegas in the 80’s was awesome!!
I would stay there for little staycations from the 90s through 2019. It was a decent place until Covid finished it off. I had always preferred the Nevada Landing until it closed.
The Nevada Landing used to be across the freeway where the Chevron station is now...When it was first built both the Goldstrike and the Nevada landing had a buffet. Early 90's I worked in Jean so ate and played at both of them !
Hwy 97 and hwy84 cross on south side of Columbia river. Hwy 97 goes North into Washington.....going up grade from river there is a STONEHENGE on the east side of the hwy. To the west of 97 is Mary Hill Museum. Same guy built both places, but his wife would not move out there in the 1920s, so like the GLASS HOUSE in Oregon......never a permanent residence.
Hi: Terrible's stations are alive and well in California. Here they're called Terrible Herpst. Back in the seventies I once met William Shatner pumping his own gas at one, driving a beat up old Mercury-something or other-. I asked him why in the world he was there in that grungy car, and he said: the industry isn't what most people think it is. That made me feel more contend with my job as a Trailways bus driver. I was just there. I stayed there a few years ago. I loved being able to find a room during CES 20 years ago without reservations. Like 50 bucks a night. I loved the view. I was sad they closed.
I used to travel to Vegas pretty regularly and I would always stop on my way out of town and pick up a $1 hotdog and a couple $1 shrimp cocktails for the road.
The Gold strike used to be the Headquarters for the Best In the Desert 's Goldstone Off Road Race. I remember going there as a kid to play in the arcade and eat at the buffet. They also had a Burger King inside. When I was racing we would always stop at the Gold Strike on our way to California because it was a lot easier to hit the buffet and get back on the road. Great Memories there. Sad to see it go.
In the past, every time my dad would drive to and from Vegas, he'd always stop here to gamble because they still had coin operated slot machines when many of the other casinos were switching to coinless. He said he liked using actual coins to gamble because he liked holding some physical money (winnings) in his hands.

My dad and us would stay there for a week in the early 2000s. Great times! Rooms were 20 to 30 dollars cheaper than the strip in Vegas. Thats the only place my dad wanted to stay. As well as the Nevada Landing across the highway. Great times I'll miss it.
With major construction pending for the BrightLine SoCal-Vegas high speed rail AND the next Vegas area airport, I would think the hotel could be resurrected for worker housing!
Building an 18 kilometer, Danish tunnel below the water to Germany (replacing a ferry line) has made a former Danish Hotel into a workplace during the built. When it is finished it may be torn down?
I remember when there was NOTHING out there. And in 1982 I drove one of the tanks used in the filming of the movie Megaforce, part of it was filmed at the dry lake bed. I was an armor crewman (I just wanted to drive the tanks but qualified in every position) with the Nevada National Guard, we sued to do a LOT of running around the desert in our tanks. also used to take my car out on the lake bed to practice high speed turns, controlled skids, bootlegger turns and do some drifting, also taught my GF the finer points of driving a high performance car properly before I let her drive my car
GREAT REHAB PROPERTY!! You can't walk anywhere, it's too far away, too HOT or too COLD. Most people in our USA do not realize how COLD VEGAS areas are.
I stayed there a few times 12-14 years ago during the 'crash', was treated really well. Eerily quiet in the smaller tower, nice crew running it. Time flies... the sign brags on the gas station so it'll probably stay.

Never stopped in there - but I frequently stopped just down the road at the old “Nevada Landing” casino. It looked like an old riverboat and smelled like someone had vomited into an ashtray. The buffet was $10.
At 16:40 in you set off the motion detector on the portable security island Wonderhussy! Yikers ! Those TV sets at 19:35 in are security monitors . They had 4 divided areas to monitor on each screen of the goings on in the casino. Very nice walk around this strange abandoned former casino and hotel. The painted 'EXIT' is b/c they've ripped out the power to the illuminated exit signs, and for safety they need to be marked for the workers in case of an emergency. Be interesting to know how many pounds of copper was reclaimed, there's at least a steak dinner in that.😁
I think I took a nap in the parking lot one time I was too tired to drive to Vegas from SoCal. It was dead back then, but I remembered their super old car collections on display.
I stayed here a couple times, once with my Dad and sister, in the late 90s, possibly 2000. We were either on our way to Southern California or heading back home to Colorado. I stayed there again by myself in the Spring of 2012 after visiting the Salton Sea and wanting to avoid all the hustle and bustle of Vegas. I don’t gamble, but I had a few beers at the bar. I was in a smoking room, and the window only opened about 3 inches as it was on an upper floor. I remember the stench of decades worth of stale smoke actually waking me up in the middle of the night hahaha, it was thick! I remember that red carpeting in the room, and just thinking how much nicotine was in it among various other “substances”. I was happy to check out that morning.
That old casino was a landmark location in my life while I lived in Vegas. Years ago, my grandparents would take us out there to the desert then finish by having lunch or dinner at the Gold Strike’s Gold Rush cafe. It was pretty good for food coming from a filthy casino. Never been to Nevada Landing before, which of course was across the interstate, and demolished. They had plans to completely develop the town of Jean with housing, as well as a new casino on the old Nevada Landing site but then the recession happened, and that killed the development plans. Gold Strike survived-Partially…… In 2011, the Gold Rush Cafe in the Gold Strike was closed down. They still had the Bonanza Buffet, but it wasn’t as good. They also removed a major portion of their slot machines. The hotel tower also was closed down. Right when the Herbst family bought it, the place was already fading away.
I stayed there cause I can just drive up from LA and walked in to get a room late. It was cheap too. Then it is just easy to drive to Vegas in the morning for the various trade shows like CES etc. There used to be another casino called Nevada Landing across the other side of the I15, and provided shuttle back and forth between the 2 casinos. The casino had a homey feel, and I have caught a few shows as well. They even had a good New York steak deal, and I remembered the price at $6.99 (wow, when was that?). I did see a development plan on Jean by the Mirage Group, and it looked back then that Jean was going to be something great. Don't remember the time frame, but I am sure it was before the banking crisis.
We stayed there three nights end of October 2019 and we met backroadswest for breakfast at Denny's. It was great exploring the Mojave/Mohave from there. 😎 Greetings from Germany Knut and Martina = the Manleys
Back in the early 1990s, I stayed at the Gold Strike many times. It costs around $25 per night for a room. It was a cheap place to sleep. I would play golf at Primm Valley Golf Course and drive into Las Vegas to gamble. I remember many busloads of old folks coming from Southern California to gamble at Gold Strike.
Jean served a purpose years ago when the Las Vegas valley didn't stretch so far south like it does today - but nowadays it's only around 15 minutes away from the M Resort at the southernmost point of Vegas so there's really no point to Jean anymore. Used to be once you passed the Tropicana exit going south on I-15 there was nothing else until you got to Jean.
Your exploration videos are what attracted me to your channel many years ago. It's nice to see you returning back to your "roots" with this video. Too bad you weren't able to get inside the place. That would have been so cool to see!
Way back in the late 70s and early 80s a lot of us kept a po bx in Jean for the address. Didn’t want to get a inspection on what ever we was driving at that time.
I stayed there back in 1998 back before ticket in and out machines were everywhere. They had alot of slots jammed on the floor so you had a good selection. I remember going across the freeway to the Nevada landing for a prime rib dinner. On weekends they used to bus people in from Los Angeles, so it got pretty full. The security was pretty tight at night because of the nearby prison.
That mooning thought did cross my mind.🤪 Seriously, I was hoping you would've got in that Gold Pan in the beginning. That would have been a Rich Strike.
I visited the Gold Strike many times. In the late 1990s, I hit for $2,000 on the dollar slot machines. My wife hit two royals flushes on the video poker machines. Buses full of South Central L.A. folks dropped off hundreds of gamblers on one-day turnaround trips. Another time, we saw a Denny's waitress attacked by a pit bull owned by two degenerates. The dish*ts took off after the pooch bit the waitress. Sorry to the Gold Strike go.
Omg that poor waitress!!! I can’t stand people that can’t (or won’t) control their dogs. I am a firm believer that some people shouldn’t have pens and/or kids. I have 2 small dogs but I never never let them roam around off their leashes or allow any kind of aggressive behavior ever.
I have been inside that hotel once back in 2010 when it was functional . They used to have the Bonnie and Clyde death car inside there and now it's been moved to the nice hotel casino across the highway.
In the Early 90's I was at the desert race there and I had to rebuild a carburetor on a 1974 International Scout in that Shell truck stop parking lot, Well long story short it was the fuel pump that went bad lol 20 bucks later we were back on the course

Did you go to the Oasis? That was the gas station/casino on the west side of I-15.
No casinos as I recall…had no xtra cash , was on a strict budget…was just passing thru on the way from Los Angeles to Detroit area to visit relatives

I gambled there when it was GoldStrike. It was a hallway casino, like South point, only less people there. I think they had coin slots.

In the past, every time my dad would drive to and from Vegas, he'd always stop here to gamble because they still had coin operated slot machines when many of the other casinos were switching to coinless. He said he liked using actual coins to gamble because he liked holding some physical money (winnings) in his hands.

the same statue , a duplicate from undoubtably the same mold, is part of the outside facade signage at Knott's berry farm , an amusement park competitive to Disneyland Seems odd that someone saw the commercial possibilities of popping out fiberglass miners , at least for awhile.
My dad and us would stay there for a week in the early 2000s. Great times! Rooms were 20 to 30 dollars cheaper than the strip in Vegas. Thats the only place my dad wanted to stay. As well as the Nevada Landing across the highway. Great times I'll miss it.
With major construction pending for the BrightLine SoCal-Vegas high speed rail AND the next Vegas area airport, I would think the hotel could be resurrected for worker housing!
Building an 18 kilometer, Danish tunnel below the water to Germany (replacing a ferry line) has made a former Danish Hotel into a workplace during the built. When it is finished it may be torn down?
I remember when there was NOTHING out there. And in 1982 I drove one of the tanks used in the filming of the movie Megaforce, part of it was filmed at the dry lake bed. I was an armor crewman (I just wanted to drive the tanks but qualified in every position) with the Nevada National Guard, we sued to do a LOT of running around the desert in our tanks. also used to take my car out on the lake bed to practice high speed turns, controlled skids, bootlegger turns and do some drifting, also taught my GF the finer points of driving a high performance car properly before I let her drive my car

GREAT REHAB PROPERTY!! You can't walk anywhere, it's too far away, too HOT or too COLD. Most people in our USA do not realize how COLD VEGAS areas are.
It was a economical place to stay at when the Consumer Electronics Show was going on in Las Vegas. The food was OK and room prices were cheap!
Use to stay there during it’s hey day, good place, hit many jackpots there and its sister casino on the west side of the 15(Nevada Landing)😎⭐️🤩
I stayed there a few times 12-14 years ago during the 'crash', was treated really well. Eerily quiet in the smaller tower, nice crew running it. Time flies... the sign brags on the gas station so it'll probably stay.

Never stopped in there - but I frequently stopped just down the road at the old “Nevada Landing” casino. It looked like an old riverboat and smelled like someone had vomited into an ashtray. The buffet was $10.

Gold Strike was once a part of the MGM Resorts portfolio. I believe MGM sold the place to Terrible Herbst in early 2016.
I think it was during the great recession of 2008. When it switched hands.
Come to Detroit, get off I-75 at Seven Mile Road and youll see some real abandonded buildings.
Amazing how much stuff turns into trash that once had some value to it.
The painted 'EXIT' is b/c they've ripped out the power to the illuminated exit signs, and for safety they need to be marked for the workers in case of an emergency. Be interesting to know how many pounds of copper was reclaimed, there's at least a steak dinner in that.😁
I was inside a couple of months ago filming. That place was a gold mine for copper.

I think I took a nap in the parking lot one time I was too tired to drive to Vegas from SoCal. It was dead back then, but I remembered their super old car collections on display.
I stayed here a couple times, once with my Dad and sister, in the late 90s, possibly 2000. We were either on our way to Southern California or heading back home to Colorado. I stayed there again by myself in the Spring of 2012 after visiting the Salton Sea and wanting to avoid all the hustle and bustle of Vegas. I don’t gamble, but I had a few beers at the bar. I was in a smoking room, and the window only opened about 3 inches as it was on an upper floor. I remember the stench of decades worth of stale smoke actually waking me up in the middle of the night hahaha, it was thick! I remember that red carpeting in the room, and just thinking how much nicotine was in it among various other “substances”. I was happy to check out that morning.
That old casino was a landmark location in my life while I lived in Vegas. Years ago, my grandparents would take us out there to the desert then finish by having lunch or dinner at the Gold Strike’s Gold Rush cafe. It was pretty good for food coming from a filthy casino. Never been to Nevada Landing before, which of course was across the interstate, and demolished. They had plans to completely develop the town of Jean with housing, as well as a new casino on the old Nevada Landing site but then the recession happened, and that killed the development plans. Gold Strike survived-Partially……
In 2011, the Gold Rush Cafe in the Gold Strike was closed down. They still had the Bonanza Buffet, but it wasn’t as good. They also removed a major portion of their slot machines. The hotel tower also was closed down. Right when the Herbst family bought it, the place was already fading away.
I've explored this place a couple times it's pretty fun
I stayed there cause I can just drive up from LA and walked in to get a room late. It was cheap too. Then it is just easy to drive to Vegas in the morning for the various trade shows like CES etc. There used to be another casino called Nevada Landing across the other side of the I15, and provided shuttle back and forth between the 2 casinos. The casino had a homey feel, and I have caught a few shows as well. They even had a good New York steak deal, and I remembered the price at $6.99 (wow, when was that?). I did see a development plan on Jean by the Mirage Group, and it looked back then that Jean was going to be something great. Don't remember the time frame, but I am sure it was before the banking crisis.
We stayed there three nights end of October 2019 and we met backroadswest for breakfast at Denny's. It was great exploring the Mojave/Mohave from there. 😎

Back in the early 1990s, I stayed at the Gold Strike many times. It costs around $25 per night for a room. It was a cheap place to sleep. I would play golf at Primm Valley Golf Course and drive into Las Vegas to gamble. I remember many busloads of old folks coming from Southern California to gamble at Gold Strike.
In my state exploring is hard as they dont required no trespassing signs and you can still get it for trespassing
I stayed in Terribles in '97. I remember a crazy plastic log-flume with water pouring along a plastic stream through the area near the check-in area.

Jean served a purpose years ago when the Las Vegas valley didn't stretch so far south like it does today - but nowadays it's only around 15 minutes away from the M Resort at the southernmost point of Vegas so there's really no point to Jean anymore. Used to be once you passed the Tropicana exit going south on I-15 there was nothing else until you got to Jean.

Way back in the late 70s and early 80s a lot of us kept a po bx in Jean for the address. Didn’t want to get a inspection on what ever we was driving at that time.

I stayed there back in 1998 back before ticket in and out machines were everywhere. They had alot of slots jammed on the floor so you had a good selection. I remember going across the freeway to the Nevada landing for a prime rib dinner. On weekends they used to bus people in from Los Angeles, so it got pretty full. The security was pretty tight at night because of the nearby prison.
That mooning thought did cross my mind.🤪 Seriously, I was hoping you would've got in that Gold Pan in the beginning. That would have been a Rich Strike.
I visited the Gold Strike many times. In the late 1990s, I hit for $2,000 on the dollar slot machines. My wife hit two royals flushes on the video poker machines. Buses full of South Central L.A. folks dropped off hundreds of gamblers on one-day turnaround trips. Another time, we saw a Denny's waitress attacked by a pit bull owned by two degenerates. The dish*ts took off after the pooch bit the waitress.

Omg that poor waitress!!! I can’t stand people that can’t (or won’t) control their dogs. I am a firm believer that some people shouldn’t have pens and/or kids. I have 2 small dogs but I never never let them roam around off their leashes or allow any kind of aggressive behavior ever.

I have been inside that hotel once back in 2010 when it was functional . They used to have the Bonnie and Clyde death car inside there and now it's been moved to the nice hotel casino across the highway.
In the Early 90's I was at the desert race there and I had to rebuild a carburetor on a 1974 International Scout in that Shell truck stop parking lot, Well long story short it was the fuel pump that went bad lol 20 bucks later we were back on the course
