I was about to say something like that. The message is important, she was brave and she involved in so many causes. I wouldn't never recommend a song like this one to introduce a friend into Nina Simone's music, just because there is not too much of enormous musical talent on it. I would say, songs easier but with a huge potential, more recent in her repertoire. Like: I Put A Spell On You My Baby Just Cares For Me Sinnerman Ain't got no - I Got Life Feeling Good Love Me Or Leave Me Fodder In Her Wings ('Fodder In My Wings' album version) Mood Indigo I love her so much!
I've never heard this song before even though my taste in music goes back to that decade. I love this woman's strength and appreciate her struggle. ❤ I also appreciate that you spoke kindly, and diplomatically of this talented woman. Great reaction. Thank you. 💙😊
Miss Simone is from nearby Tryon, NC and then Miss Roberta Flack from nearby Black Mountain, NC. I'm proud that these women, overburdened with talent, are from this same land as I.
Some other must listens from Nina Simone are Strange Fruit (originally performed by Billie Holiday, but there is something incredibly raw in Nina Simone's) and I Shall Be Released (written by Bob Dylan, but again, she brings so much to it). I also love I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl.
Nina is such an amazing pianist and singer. Some other great recordings of hers to check out: 1. Feeling Good 2. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood 3. Memphis in June (my favorite Nina recording) 4. I Wonder What it Feels Like to be Free 5. Cotton Eyed Joe 6. I Put A Spell on You 7. To Be Young, Gifted and Black
Well as you know this is a song about racism and Simone's reaction to it. History lesson: Governor Wallace was profound Racist and was very vocal about it in the 60's. He was a Klansman and enforced the Jim Crow Law much like we have in politics today....and she is making it her mission like many black like us back in the day to expose racism and state our disapproval of it!!! Powerful song!!! Powerful Woman!!!!
Thanks for highlighting this song and the great Nina Simone. Amazing person and artist. You might want to check out the song "Nina Cried Power" by Hozier where he highlights so many of the musicians and activists who have stood up for human rights -- its a powerful tribute to Nina and those like her who took a stand.
The first time i heard of her was when i saw this vid Now she has become of my fav female artist A talented woman that speaks her mind Check her out live doing i wish i new what it meant to be free Amazing piano player
She had an incredible voice, and this song is so in your face. "Strange Fruit" is even more pointed, and older; recorded earlier by Billie Holiday. But I would also love for you to follow this with my very favorite of Nina's, which you've probably heard at some point in your life: "Feeling Good." Covers since then very rarely can shine a candle to hers, and none truly compare. It's EPIC. Same album, and a song you've SURELY heard: "I Put a Spell on You." She and Screamin' Jay Hawkins can share the title for that one.
A bit of perspective on the strength of the song; in 1964 "Goddam" was considered a strong curse word to use, much less put in the title of a song. It was not used on TV, the radio or used in any media of the day. That song is a battle cry.
The Beatles, more specifically Paul McCartney, wrote Blackbird about HER. And she was good friends with both George Harrison (See her album Emergency Ward, and again specifically ‘Isn’t It A Pity’) as well as David Bowie. A remarkable human being and a force of nature not to be trifled with.
Nina Simone and David Bowie were good friends..she does as a version of a song called..Wild is to the wind.Still not sure to this day who did this original. As Bowie did too.One very strong and direct lady .
Have a listen to the Jaffa remix of Miss Simone’s - “Black is the colour of my true love’s hair” - it was such a brilliant way of honouring her talent and bringing it to a new audience.
Oh. Yes. Be reverent. (and I’m not religious) I almost say her name in a hushed voice because she’s in the all time, human cultural history, very TOP echelon of musical saints, with Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Ella, Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Lennon, Dylan. TOWERING talent. Just hearing her/their name tugs my heart for giving SO much unique, stunning beauty and love to the world. They taught us SO much. I’m desperately grateful to them. ♥️
I've heard from my parents and elders that lived through the 60'S and they said even earlier than that in history... That black individuals/singers/bands were allowed to go into the South and play for the white man and dazzle them...but once they were done with their set all bets were off... The second they were done singing they high tailed it to their vehicles and got the h*ll on out of the South for fear that "the white man" would hunt them down... Some singers were even killed or beat up after a set from racist individuals in the South...They sang and left as soon as possible so as not to be hurt or killed AND they would never Dare stay out past sundown... They were allowed to sing for "the white man" and give them a show, but never were allowed to feel like they would make it out of the South alive.
hes referring to another emotional standout performance by nina from this same show, a cover of the bee gees song "to love somebody." absolutely seconded, please react to that one too! thx!
Amazing first Nina choice, and an important song for the ages. Her delivery is 🔥
She was the definition of a strong black women, you should really check out some of her studio albums, she was so gifted! 👍👏❤️

She's worth a deep dive, Salvo. If you appreciate her with this song, you'll love the rest of it. Really
I've never heard this song before even though my taste in music goes back to that decade. I love this woman's strength and appreciate her struggle. ❤ I also appreciate that you spoke kindly, and diplomatically of this talented woman. Great reaction. Thank you. 💙😊
A true American genius. No one like her. There's so much to explore.

I was always surprised she was allowed at the time to put it on vinyl. But I never read the story how hard she had to push …
Powerful and brave statement for the time and still rings true in certain parts of the world today. It’s people like her that has changed the world 🙏

Sinner man might be my favourite
I love artist like her!!! Honest!!! Just raw!! that's what I got to say!!! That's how I feel!!! I am through!!! Bye!!! lol....I love it!!!
One of the few most powerful songs of all time
Nina Simone and David Bowie were good friends..she does as a version of a song called..Wild is to the wind.Still not sure to this day who did this original. As Bowie did too.One very strong and direct lady .
Strange Fruit is a must of hers.
Strange Fruit is a Billie Holiday song. ❤
@lynnegunn2425 And an exquisite cover of that song is sung by Nina Simone.

"Wild Is The Wind" and "Stars" are musts (in a very long list of Simone "musts")
I love Nina Simone … check out Nobody‘s Fault but Mine.
Listen to "Mood Indigo" it's great.

She could have just replaced governor Wallace and put in president trump it would still work ✌️
You got that right!
