Really interesting, in Act 2, to see the way that the film quality at that time really works well for the Willis. The streaks of blur really add to the ethereal look.
BRAVO! BRAVISSIMO!!! VIVA DOLIN and MARKOVA!!! Thank you ENB for showing the world the blueprint of the ROMANTIC STYLE. Whether Dolin and Markova were aware of it or not, they are truly the architects of it. It is amazing and a fitting tribute to Dolin how much of his own version exists in Alicia Alonso's production, particularly in the second act, just how he taught it to her in 1943. How wonderful to see the Spessivtseva diagonal in the first act with a magnificent brioesque Markova. Why the Russians omitted it from their productions replacing it with piques is a great mystery, to Markova herself who I asked in 1984, "Why" during an intermission at the Metropolitan Opera centennial gala, to which she replied with wicked humor: "When you find out let ME know.".. Dolin is great in the variation and the saute before the end is fantastic. Clearly the result is a great testament to the ENGLISH romantic style and it's roots. BRAVO!!!
That was just delightful! I'm thrilled that you've posted footage of Markova and Dolin for those of us who otherwise would never have gotten a chance to see them. Although I can see you had some blocking issues with this stage, the space is used really well, and led to the only sequence of hops on point that I've ever caught my breath over. Markova's feet are just sparkly on the traveling entrechat quatre phrase (looks like she should be striking sparks from the floor). Although I could wish for a little more of the dancing from the second act, this narrated film is just a little gem. Thanks for posting!
Better than I would have expected. Markova dances with lughtness and feeling. Dolin frankly bores me. Intelligent but 'acting' - to me, passionless. But good to see this. Wish we had even earlier versions. It would be wonderful to see how it evolved from the original production in the 1840s.
what a difference to the russian versions of that period, the men were much bigger and more butch all the male dancers including Dolin are very skinny and not at all atractive.I agree his acting is awful and has the same expression not at all convincing. Still it was great to see this performance as there is so little of Markova . I loved the mad scene it was not over the top and unlike Dolin was totally believable.
They were patrons of my school Arts Educational. They were in the audience as we cut our teeth. Lucky fellows indeed...coached by Anne Heaton, glorious days !!!
They both were very fine actors and dancers. This ballet is utterly romantic, I love it.

She was the first Giselle I ever saw and still my favorite! In the second act she is weightless! Bravo!
My goodness, Markova was 41 when this ballet was filmed. She is truly remarkable, and her footwork is flawless.
BRAVO! BRAVISSIMO!!!

Дама Алисия Маркова в роли Жизель очень грациозна и трогательна! Очень изящная линия шеи и плеч! Спасибо за возможность посмотреть этот фильм!❤
A very well matched Couple.....Dolin and Markova .
❤estaba buscando este ballet deseperada
One of the great Giselles and at the time in the 40's was considered the greatest Giselle by the critics.
OMG beautiful xoxox
Thank you very much!
Nice to see Sir Malcom ("Flash" to promenaders of the time), too!

You can't take you eyes off her.
I recognize the narrators voice but don't know who it is
The stage seems so small.

The steps are there but the interpretation ni fou ni fua I was expecting more from Markova
